If Ronaldinho's form was a joy for Barcelona, it was a nightmare for Real Madrid and Man Utd. Both these European aristocrats were seeing their fortunes slump to a long-forgotten low: the team who bought too many stars and the team who missed out on the one who really mattered. Barcelona forgot all about Beckham's snub; and as Cristiano Ronaldo sometimes flattered to deceive in Manchester United colours, Red Devils fans began to wonder if they'd bought the wrong replacement. But nothing was more satisfying than Real's identity crisis: shipping in Everton's Thomas Gravesen as a poor-man's Edgar Davids; buying Michael Owen just to put him on the bench, because even in the worst form of their careers sacred cows Raul and Ronaldo were too precious to be dropped. | Translation - Czech
Také samotní hráči si uvědomovali, jaká je to čest hrát s takovým géniem. Jen možnost s ním trénovat byla vzrušující. Nizozemci, mistři technických fines, byli ohromeni. Giovanni van Bronckhorst tvrdil: „Ohromí vás na každém tréninku“. Zatímco Philip Cocu se o Ronaldinhovi vyjadřoval jednoduše s obdivem:
„Má tak rychlé nohy, že je schopen dotknout se míče čtyřikrát za půl vteřiny. Kdybych totéž zkusil já, ublížil bych si.“
Jestliže pro Barcelonu byla Ronaldinhova forma potěšením, pro Real Madrid i Manchester United byla bezesporu noční můrou. Akcie obou těchto evropských vládců náhle poklesly nebývale nízko: První tým nakoupil hvězd příliš mnoho, druhý naopak propásl příležitost získat hvězdu největší. Barcelona úplně zapomněla na to, že ji Beckham kdysi ignoroval. A jelikož Cristiano Ronaldo v dresu Manchesteru United čas od času nedostával své pověsti, Rudí ďáblové se sami sebe ptali, zda je tím pravým hráčem, který by měl nahradit Davida Beckhama. Ale nic Barcelonu netěšilo více než pokračující krize Realu. Ten angažoval Thomase Gravesena, který byl slabým odvarem Edgara Davidse, a koupil Michaela Owena, aby jej zařadil mezi náhradníky, protože nedotknutelní Raúl s Ronaldem byli i ve své nejhorší formě příliš cenní na to, aby seděli na lavičce. |
