Celles-ci se déroulèrent en septembre suivant, en la basilique San Lorenzo, pour répondre à la solidité de l’alliance nouée avec la maison de France depuis le mariage de Marie de Médicis avec Henri IV en 1600.
Cette pompe funèbre réserve un important programme iconographique constitué de vingt-six grandes toiles peintes en grisaille retraçant la vie d’Henri IV. Pour l’exécution de ce travail collectif, on fit appel au talent éprouvé d’un groupe d’artistes toscans gravitant dans l’orbite des Médicis.
Dix-neuf de ces tableaux appartenant aux collections italiennes ont été retrouvés et restaurés. Complétés par quelques œuvres signifiantes par leur caractère historique et précieux, ils font l’objet de cet ouvrage et de l’exposition commémorative qui lui est associée en deux étapes : au château de Pau, dans les Pyrénées, où naquit le futur roi de France et de Navarre, puis à Florence, aux Chapelles Médicis, somptueux symbole de la magnificence médicéenne. | Translation - Italian Quando a Firenze si sparse la tragica notizia della morte di Enrico IV, assassinato da Ravaillac il 14 maggio 1610 nel cuore di Parigi, il giovanissimo Cosimo II decise di allestire i funerali in effigie per il Re cristianissimo. Le esequie avvennero il 16 settembre successivo nella basilica di San Lorenzo, in virtù della solida alleanza stretta con la casa di Francia a seguito del matrimonio di Maria de’ Medici con Enrico IV, celebrato nel 1600.
Nell’apparato funebre si ammira un importante programma iconografico costituito da ventisei grandi tele dipinte in grisaglia e dedicate alla vita di Enrico IV. Per l’esecuzione del ciclo ci si avvalse del comprovato talento di un gruppo di artisti toscani gravitanti nell’orbita dei Medici.
Diciannove di questi dipinti, appartenenti alle collezioni italiane, sono stati ritrovati e restaurati.
