STEEN
Met de signatuur van duurzaamheid en onvergankelijkheid, is steen in veel culturen een symbool van de goddelijke macht. Daarbij komt nog aan dat sommige stenen ontlokt vonken kunnen worden, en dat andere uit de hemel vallen (meteoriten) of opvallende vormen hebben. In de oudste cultuurperioden kende men alleen het gebruik van steen voor het vervaardigen van werktuigen en wapens, waarvoor de nodige materialenkennis vereist was. Vanaf ca. 6000 v.C. werden er her en der gewijde bouwsels uit grote steenblokken (megalithische monumenten) opgetrokken, zoals dolmens en hunebedden (1), en kringen en heilige wegen van grote stenen (-> menhir). In diverse mythen zijn bovennatuurlijke wezens uit steen ontstaan.
(1) Hunebedden in Noordoost-Nederland, Noordwest-Duitsland en Denemarken andere kenmerken hebben (de ingang is aan de lange zijde) en door een andere cultuur gebouwd zijn dan de dolmens in grote delen van Frankrijk en België. De term hunebed wordt dan gereserveerd voor dat soort megalithische bouwwerken die in Noord-Europa voorkomen en gebouwd zijn door mensen van de Trechterbekercultuur. Con el distintivo de durabilidad y perennidad, la piedra es en muchas culturas un símbolo del poder divino. De ahí todavía proviene que algunas piedras puedan arrancar chispas y que otras caigan del cielo (meteoritos) o que tengan formas llamativas. En los períodos de civilizaciones más antiguas solamente se conocía el uso de la piedra para la preparación de herramientas de trabajo y armas, para las que se exigía el necesario conocimiento de los materiales. Desde alrededor del año 6.000 a.C. se levantaban aquí y allá construcciones sagradas exraídas de enormes losas de piedra (monumentos megalíticos), así como dólmenes bretones y dólmenes de la Europa septentrional (1), hileras en círculo y pesos sagrados de grandes piedras (-> menhir). En diversos mitos, seres sobrenaturales surgen de la piedra.
(1) Los dólmenes de la Europa septentrional (en el noreste de los Países Bajos, el noroeste de Alemania y en Dinamarca) presentan otras caracteristicas diferentes de los dólmenes de gran parte de Francia y Bélgica (p.e. la entrada se encuentra en el lado más amplio). QUICK GUIDE TO TRAINING
1 The key to all training is praise, kindness and consistency, and it is based on trust, affection and the correct use of the leash.
2 You will require much more patience than you think you will.
3 Your dog has much more patience than you have.
4 You must think both for yourself and for your dog.
5 Your dog learns by constant repetition and by conditioning his reflexes over a long period of time.
6 You will achieve the best results if your dog learns slowly over a long period.
7 Training does not advance evenly: there are periods of rapid progress, difficult periods, and times when seemingly no progress is made at all.
8 Your dog must never connect you, the trainer, with unpleasant experiences. He must think that they are entirely due to his own fault, such as bumping into you when heeling, or the pressure on his throat from the collar.
9 He learns that certain consequences are pleasing while others are displeasing.
10 He must learn that your left side provides his refuge: nothing unpleasant happens there.
11 Your dog learns that correct behaviour leads to praise and comfort, whereas incorrect behaviour unaccountably results in discomfort and no praise or caresses.
12 If a new lesson is difficult, revert to an easy one where he will receive praise instead of being corrected.
13 Your dog will find training enjoyable at first. Keep it so, or else the novelty may soon wear off.
14 Do assess your dog’s temperament, so that you do not use too strong or too weak corrections.
15 Keep the lessons relaxed. If you find you are losing your temper stop immediately. Nothing will be achieved.
16 Never damp your dog’s enthusiasm, and do not make him resentful.
17 Keep the training sessions short; one twenty-minute period or two ten-minute periods, in the same place and at the same time each day for a minimum of five days a week.
18 Keep your dog’s vocabulary; same commands, same signals, same tones of voice, and same whistle. If you vary any of these you will confuse your dog.
19 Anticipate your dog’s mistake and prevent them before he makes them, so that you can give praise instead of a correction.
20 Watch your dog’s reactions; if he backs away from you he is afraid of you, or if his tail is down he is unhappy. He should obey you because he loves and trusts you, not because he is afraid of you.
21 Never reprimand your dog when he comes to you, even if he has just misbehaved himself. He will think he is being scolded for the act of coming to you. Coming to you must be a pleasure to him.
22 If you have an excitable dog, use slow movements and quiet, low tones.
23 If your dog is sluggish, move faster and use enthusiastic and exciting tones.
24 All training is common sense; do not call ‘Come’ when you see your dog running after another dog (he is unlikely to obey you).
25 Be fair, but firm; we all have our off days and so do dogs.
26 Make a pause between each correction, praise and command.
27 Never repeat a command before correcting your dog, ie a double command.
28 If you have to repeat a command after making a correction, each command must be given more demandingly, and each leash correction more forcefully. If your dog continues not to respond, go through his repertoire so that you can take the opportunity of praising him.
29 In the early lessons give praise and encouragement at every opportunity. Later give praise intermittently.
30 On accepting any object from a retrieve keep your head down and do not stare at your dog, and then thank him.
31 When your dog is heeling, if he goes ahead of you take a step backwards. If he is too far to your left take a step to your right. If he is slow coming in to you run backwards.
32 If your dog makes a mistake when he is close to you, allow him to move from you and continue the mistake so that you have sufficient room to crack the leash.
33 Confine your dog for two hours before a lesson.
34 Play and romp with your dog before and after the lesson.
35 Never end a lesson before your dog is performing correctly, so that he can earn praise. He must finish every lesson happily so that he will look forward to the next one.

KRUIDENBOEKEN UIT BRUGSE BOEKENVERZAMELINGEN

In deze bijdrage worden de kruidenboeken uit twee Brugse collecties beschreven, met name de O. B. Brugge en het M.-S.-J. We benaderen deze boeken vanuit de context waarin ze jarenlang funcioneerden: enerzijds een schoolbibliotheek en een stadsbibliotheek omstreeks 1800, anderzijds een boekenverzameling van het hospitaalapotheek in het midden van de 18de eeuw. Maar het blijft nuttig om vooraf het terrein van de ‘kruidenboeken’ even in kaart te brengen.
TYPOLOGIE
Het inventariseren en beschrijven van de plantenwereld genoot tijdens de 16de eeuw vernieuwde belangstelling. Deze interesse maakte deel uit van de renaissancegeest om de wereld om ons heen te beschrijven en te begrijpen. Daartoe richtten wetenschappers zich graag naar de grote voorlopers uit de Oudheid. Antieke teksten van Dioscorides en Theophrastes over planten, bloemen en vruchten, en hun medische toepassingen, werden opgediept en uitgegeven, weliswar voorzien van commentaren en aanvullingen vanuit het eigentijdse onderzoek en de praktijk van het herboriseren. Maar evenzeer bouwden kruidkundigen, overwegend wetenschappers met een medische scholing, aan een nieuwe oeuvre. De kruidenboeken van R. D. (1517-1585), M. d. l’O. (1538-1616) en C. d. l’E. (1526-1609) geven aan dat de Zuidelijke Nederlanden in de 16de eeuw vooropgingen in deze beweging. R.D. en tijdgenoten waren actief in een internationale context en hun werk werd op de persen gelegd van prestigieuze drukkershuizen (ondermeer P. in Antwerpen en Leiden).
Kruidenboeken bleven een onmisbaar instrument voor elke apotheker. Ze waren een gids voor de grondstoffen (simplicia) van zijn ambacht. Kruidenboeken werden tot de 17de eeuw aangelegd om de plantenwereld in kaart te brengen maar vooral als praktische gids voor de medische toepassingen van de beschreven planten. Naderhand ging de studie van de plantenwereld zich verwetenschappelijken en verdrongen botanische en systematische beschrijvingen de utilitaire aanpak. Beide tradities bleven evenwel naast elkaar bestaan; nog in de 19de eeuw verzorgde de Brugse apotheker E. V. flora’s van West-Vlaanderen.

En este capítulo se describen los libros de plantas medicinales a partir de dos colecciones brujenses, a saber la B.P. de Brujas y el M.-S.-J. Situamos estos libros en el contexto donde tuvieron su función durante años: por un lado una biblioteca escolar y municipal de alrededor del año 1800 y, por otro lado, una colección de libros de una farmacia hospitalaria de mediados del siglo XVIII. Pero sigue siendo práctico incluirlo en el mapa de los "libros de especias".
TIPOLOGÍA
El inventariado y descripción del mundo de las plantas goza durante el siglo XVI de una importancia renovada. Estos intereses formaban parte del espíritu renacentista de volver a describir y comprender el mundo que nos rodea. Por ello gustaban los científicos de poner sus miradas en los grandes pioneros de la Antigüedad. Se rescataron y divulgaron textos antiguos de Dioscórides y de Teofrastes sobre plantas, flores y frutos y sus propiedades medicinales, probablemente provistos de comentarios y matices propios de la investigación de la época y de la práctica de la herboristería. Pero igualmente los expertos en plantas medicinales, principalmente científicos con formación médica, crearon una nueva obra. Las guías de plantas medicinales de R. D. (1517-1585), M. d. l’O. (1538-1616) y C. d. l’E. (1526-1609) indican que los Países Bajos del Sur en el siglo XVI encabezaban esta evolución. R.D. y sus coetáneos estaban activos en un contexto internacional y su labor entró en prensa de prestigiosas imprentas (entre otras, P. en Amberes y Lieja).
Las guías de plantas medicinales siguen siendo un instrumento indispensable para todo farmacéutico. Éstas fueron un referente en cuanto a las materias primas (medicinas simples) de la profesión y fueron creadas hasta el siglo XVII para trazar el mapa del mundo de las plantas pero, sobre todo, a modo de guía práctica de las propiedades medicinales de las plantas descritas. Más tarde, el estudio del mundo de las plantas fue especializándose y las descripciones botánicas y sistemáticas desplazaron al enfoque utilitario. Ambas tradiciones continúan existiendo, no obstante, de forma paralela: aún en el siglo XIX el farmacólogo brujense E. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling
Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors. They may form explosive mixtures with air. Prevent the creation of flammable or explosive concentrations of vapour in air and avoid vapour concentrations higher than the occupational exposure limits. Additionally, the product should only be used in areas from which all naked lights and other sources of ignition have been excluded. Electrical equipment should be protected to the appropriate standard. Keep the container tightly closed. Exclude sources of heat and open flame. Non-sparking tools should be used. Avoid skin and eye contact. Avoid inhalation of vapour and spray mist. Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in areas of storage and use. For personal protection, see Section 8. Never use pressure to empty: the container is not a pressure vessel. Always keep in containers made of the same material as the supply container.
Good housekeeping standards and regular safe removal of waste materials will minimise risks of spontaneous combustion and other fire hazards. The product may charge electrostatically. Use earthing leads when transferring from one container to another. Operators should wear anti-static footwear and clothing and floors should be electrically conductive. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations may apply to the handling of containers of this product. Refer to the guide weight indicated in the container when carrying out assessments.
When the operatives were inside the spray booth, applying or not, and ventilation is not enough to control particulates and solvent vapour concentrations, air-fed respiratory protective equipment should be worn, until the concentrations mentioned above were below the ocupational exposure limits.
Storage
Observe the label precautions. Store between 5 and 35 ºC in a dry, well ventilated place away from sources of heat, ignition and direct sunlight. No smoking. Prevent unauthorised access. Containers which are opened should be properly resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. The principles contained in the HSE's guidance note Storage and Packaged Dangerous Substances should be observed when storing this product. Store separately from oxidising agents and strongly alkaline and strongly acidic materials, amines, alcohols and water.
The storage and use of this product is subject to the requirements of the Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Petroleum Gases Regulations. Up to 50 litres of such highly flammable liquids may be kept in a work room provided they are kept in a fire-proof cupboard or bin. Larger quantities must be kept in a separate storeroom conforming to the structural requirements of the regulations. Further guidance is contained in the HSE guidance note Storage of Flammable Liquids in Containers.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
Engineering Measures
Provide adequate ventilation. Where reasonably practicable this should be achieved by the use of local exhaust ventilation and good general extraction. If these are not sufficient to maintain concentrations of particulates and/or solvent vapours below the relevant occupational exposure limits, suitable respiratory protective equipment should be worn. (see 'Personal protection' below).

Personal protection
All ppe, including rpe, used to control exposure to hazardous substances must be selected to meet requirements of the COSHH Regulations.
Respiratory protection: Air-fed respiratory protective equipment should be worn when this product is sprayed. This should be in addition to other measures taken to reduce exposure (e.g. in booth design and operation and process modifications). Non-essential and unprotected people should be excluded from the area if exposure is possible.
Hand protection: When skin exposure may occur, advice should be sought from glove suppliers on appropriate types. Barrier creams may help to protect exposed areas of the skin but are not substitutes for full physical protection. They should not be applied once exposure has occurred.
Eye protection: Eye protection designed to protect against liquid splashes should be worn.
Skin protection: Cotton or cotton/synthetic overalls or coveralls are normally suitable. Grossly contaminated clothing should be removed and the skin washed with soap and water or a proprietary skin cleaner.

7. MANIPULACIÓN Y ALMACENAMIENTO
Manipulación
Los vapores pesan más que el aire y pueden extenderse por los suelos. Éstos pueden formar mezclas explosivas con el aire. Evite la creación de concentraciones de vapor en el aire inflamables o explosivas y evite concentraciones de vapor superiores a los límites de exposición en el trabajo. Además, el producto solamente debe usarse en áreas de las que se ha eliminado toda llama desprotegida y otros focos de ignición. El equipo eléctrico debe protegerse según la norma adecuada. Mantenga el recipiente bien cerrado, aíslelo de fuentes de calor y chispas de llamas. Deben utilizarse herramientas que no puedan producir chispas. Evite el contacto del producto con piel y ojos. Evite la inhalación de vapor y la nube de partículas tras el pulverizado. Fumar, comer y beber debe estar prohibido en áreas de almacenamiento y aplicación del producto. Para su protección personal, vea la Sección 8. Nunca presione el envase para vaciarlo: el envase no es un recipiente a presión. Conserve siempre el producto en recipientes del mismo material que el de los envases de aplicación.
El cumplimiento de la legislación en materia de higiene y el retirado homologado de materiales de desecho de la zona de aplicación minimizan el riesgo de combustión espontánea y otros peligros con el fuego. Utilice conductores de puesta a tierra cuando trasvase el producto de un recipiente a otro. Los operarios deben llevar calzado antiestático y ropa y suelos deben ser eléctricamente conductores. Almacene este producto según el Real Decreto 000/0000, de 6 de abril sobre Almacenamiento de Productos Químicos (MIEAPQ-1), modificado por el R.D. 000/0000, de 5 de febrero, y/o según la legislación local vigente. Observe la guía de carga indicada en el envase cuando se realicen evaluaciones.
Cuando los operarios se encuentren en la cabina de pulverización, tanto si están haciendo una aplicación o no, y la ventilación no sea la suficiente para controlar las concentraciones de partículas y de vapor disolvente, éstos deben llevar un equipo de protección respiratoria de aire asistido hasta que las concentraciones mencionadas anteriormente sean inferiores a los límites de exposición en el trabajo.
Almacenamiento
Observe las precauciones de la etiqueta. Guarde entre 5 y 35 ºC en lugar seco, bien ventilado y alejado de fuentes de calor, ignición y de exposición directa al sol. Prohibido fumar. Evite el acceso a personas no autorizadas. Los envases abiertos deben cerrarse correctamente y mantenerse en posición vertical para evitar derrames. Almacene este producto según el Real Decreto 000/0000, de 6 de abril sobre Almacenamiento de Productos Químicos (MIEAPQ-1), modificado por el R.D. 000/0000, de 5 de febrero, y/o según la legislación local vigente. Deben observarse los principios reflejados en el epígrafe Almacenamiento y Empaquetado de Sustancias Peligrosas del INSHT cuando se almacene este producto. Guarde este producto alejado de agentes oxidantes y de materiales fuertemente alcalinos y ácidos, aminos, alcoholes y agua.
El almacenamiento y uso de este producto está sujeto a los requerimientos de la regulación vigente sobre Líquidos Altamente Inflamables y Gases Licuados de Petróleo. Hasta 50 litros de estos líquidos altamente inflamables pueden guardarse en un área de trabajo, siempre y cuando éstos estén dentro de un armario o cubo resistente al fuego. Cantidades mayores de este producto deben guardarse en un almacén separado que cumpla los requisitos estructurales según la legislación vigente. El INSHT dispone de orientación más detallada en el epígrafe Almacenamiento de Líquidos Inflamables en Recipientes.
8. CONTROLES DE EXPOSICIÓN / PROTECCIÓN PERSONAL
Medidas técnicas
Proporcione al área de exposición una correcta ventilación. Dentro de lo razonablemente factible, ello se puede conseguir mediante una profunda ventilación local y un buen sistema general de extracción. Si estas medidas no fueran suficientes para mantener las concentraciones de partículas y/o vapores disolventes por debajo de los niveles de exposición en el trabajo, debe llevarse un equipo respiratorio protector adecuado (véase ‘Protección personal’ más abajo).

Protección personal
Todos los EPI [2], incluyendo los EPR [3], usados para controlar la exposición a sustancias peligrosas deben ser seleccionados por cumplir los requisitos según la normativa del INSHT.
Protección respiratoria: Debe utilizarse un equipo de protección respiratoria de aire asistido cuando se pulverice este producto. Esto debe ser algo adicional a otras medidas aplicadas para reducir la exposición (p.e. en modificaciones de proceso, diseño y funcionamiento realizadas dentro de cabina). Deben excluirse del área aquellas personas innecesarias y desprotegidas si existe posibilidad de exposición.
Protección de las manos: Cuando pueda darse la exposición cutánea, debe solicitarse el asesoramiento de proveedores de guantes en su adecuada tipología. Las cremas de protección pueden ayudar a proteger áreas de la piel expuestas pero no son substitutas de una protección física completa. Éstas no deben aplicarse una vez haya tenido lugar la exposición.
Protección de los ojos: Deben utilizarse gafas protectoras diseñadas contra las salpicaduras de líquidos.
Protección de la piel: Normalmente son apropiadas las prendas con mangas, holgadas, ligeras y de algodón o de fibras sintéticas. Deben quitarse las prendas en gran medida contaminadas y debe lavarse la piel con agua y jabón o con un detergente cutáneo patentado.

LEESFANATEN EN KIJKCIJFERS
De leesvoorkeur van onze informanten beantwoordt enerzijds aan een aantal voorgestelde verwachtingen, maar anderzijds bevatten de resultaten ook verrassende gegevens o.m. in verband met het probleemboek en het informatieve boek.
We zetten een aantal bevindingen op een rij.
Zij houden verband met het groeiproces, de sterke verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes, de spanning tussen voorkeur en afkeer.
De verschuiving in de genrevoorkeur verloopt lanzaam. De ontwikkeling tussen negen en twaalf kan men omschrijven als een zoektocht naar steeds complexere en opwindender verbeeldingswerelden. Bij de jongsten is er, naast de uitgesproken belangstelling voor strips en avonturenverhalen, nog een duidelijk positieve waardering voor het sprookje. De aandacht voor het sprookje en het fantastische verhaal komt hoofdzakelijk op rekening van de vrouwelike informanten. Jongens kiezen voor misdadigersverhalen en SF. De jongste informanten dienen zich aan als evasorische lezers. Boeken over gewone kinderen spreken hen (nog) niet aan. Het doelgericht lezen om kennis te verwerven manifesteert zich alleen in de positieve waardering voor boeken met informatie over de natuur. Dit genre komt op de vierde plaats. De andere zakelijke boeken scoren erg laag, evenals het historisch verhaal. De informaten hebben een zekere sympathie voor versjes. Bij de oudere lezers zal dit genre opvallend laag scoren. Plaatjesboeken en probleemboeken worden vrij eensgezind afgewezen. Het eerste genre is men ontgroeid en aan de probleemboeken zijn de lezers blijkbaar nog niet toe.
(13) Piaget herkent in de ontwikkeling van het kind verschillende elkaar opvolgende fasen. Het lagere-schoolkind bevindt zich in de operatieve fase (van 7 tot 11/12 jaar). Het kan allerlei handelingen verrichten met concrete voorstelbare voorwerpen. Het heeft nog moeite met abstracte begrippen. Wel groeit er een inzicht in de (on)omkeerbaarheid van bepaalde handelingen en in oorzaak en gevolg. Pas in de volgende fase, die van formele formaties, komen kinderen aan echte hypothesevorming toe. Ze zijn niet langer afhankelijk van wat ze zien. Ze kunnen nu mogelijke problemen voorstellen en ook zoeken naar mogelijke oplossingen. Zowel gedurende de fase van de concrete operaties als gedurende de fase van de formele operaties ontwikkelt zich een beweging van decentratie Het kind komt steeds meer los van zichzelf en van zijn eigen standpunt om ook met de ogen van een ander de werkelijkheid te bekijken. Dit groeiproces verklaart dus waarom probleemboeken pas later in de belangstellingssfeer komen.

AFECCIONATS A LA LECTURA I ÍNDEXOS DE POPULARITAT
La preferència lectora dels nostres enquestats dóna resposta, d’una banda, a una sèrie d’expectatives figurades però, d’una altra banda, els resultats contenen també dades sorprenents en relació –entre d’altres- al llibre de dificultat i al llibre divulgatiu.
Fem recompte d’una sèrie de resultats.
Aquests tenen relació amb el procés de creixement, les marcades diferències entre nois i noies, la tensió entre predilecció i aversió.
El desplaçament dins de la predilecció del gènere literari succeeix lentament.
El desenvolupament comprès entre els nou i dotze anys es pot definir com una sortida cap a la cerca de móns imaginaris cada vegada més complexos i més excitants. En els nois encara es troba, al costat de la mencionada importància per als còmics i relats d’aventures, una clara consideració positiva cap als comptes de fades.
L’atenció cap al compte de fades i el relat fantàstic esdevé predominant per part de les enquestades. Els nois es decanten pels relats de crims i de ciència ficció. Els enquestats més joves es presenten com a lectors per evasió. Els llibres sobre nens normals i corrents (encara) no els diuen res. La lectura directa per a adquirir coneixement es manifesta només amb valoració positiva per a llibres d’informació sobre la natura. Aquest gènere literari ocupa el quart lloc. Els altres llibres comercials tenen una puntuació molt baixa, com la del relat històric. Els enquestats tenen veritable simpatia per als poemes curts. En els lectors més grans aquest gènere literari puntuarà notablement poc. Els llibres il·lustrats i els llibres de dificultat es refusen de manera força unànime. El primer gènere literari, tothom l’ha superat i cap als llibres de dificultat, sembla ser que els lectors encara no s’hi dirigeixen.
(13) Piaget reconeix en el desenvolupament del nen diferents fases consecutives entre si. L’alumne/a de primària es troba en la fase funcional (de 7 a 11/12 anys). Pot dur a terme tot tipus d’accions amb eines concretes imaginables. Encara té dificultat amb els conceptes abstractes. Sí que hi creix en l’alumne/a una consciència d’aquelles accions reversibles i les irreversibles i de la causa i l’efecte. No és fins a la fase següent, la de les formacions convencionals, que els infants es dirigeixen cap a la veritable formació d’hipòtesi. Ja no depenen d’allò que veuen. Ara poden plantejar-se possibles problemes i també cercar possibles solucions. Tant en la fase d’operacions concretes com en la fase d’operacions convencionals, es desenvolupa un desplaçament de la centralitat. El nen es distancia cada cop més de si mateix i del seu punt de partida per tal de contemplar la realitat també amb els ulls d’un altre. Aquest procés de creixement explica, doncs, perquè els llibres de dificultat no entren en l’àmbit d’interès fins més endavant.
