Liebe auf den ersten Blick war es nicht 1989, als die Berliner Phil-harmoniker über Nacht ohne ihren verstorbenen Übervater Herbert von Karajan dastanden und rasch einen Nachfolger ausgucken muss-ten, läutete bei Simon Rattle das Telefon. Er fühlte sich "sehr ge-schmeichelt", erwiderte der verblüffte Brite den verblüfften Berli-nern, aber doch "noch zu jung" für den heiligen Stuhl der klassi-schen Musik, Das war, alle Achtung, der Thronverzicht eines nicht mal 35-Jährigen. Auch als sich Rattle wenig später zu seinen ersten Gastauftritten in Berlin blicken ließ, lag man sich nicht gleich glück-selig in den Armen. Eine geplante Plattenaufnahme beispielsweise platzte, weil das Orchester zwischen Proben und Produktion einfach die Besetzung gewechselt und mit dieser praxis den Dirigenten ver-grätzt hatte. Die philharmonische Erstaufführung der (nachträglich vervollständigten) 10. Mahler-Sinfonie fiel aus, weil die Musiker das Werk nicht mochten, Während der Einstudierung einer Haydn-Partitur gab es gehörig Ärger weil ein Teil der Streicher einfach nach Hause gegangen war. Nein, bei seinen ersten Schritten in die Berliner Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße 1 - Anschrift des besten und bestbezahlten Orchesters Deutschlands - hing für Rattle der Himmel nicht voller Geigen. Doch jetzt, im Herbst 2002, sind Rattle und die Berliner - Her Majesty's geadelter Lockenkopf und Germany's tö-nende Nationalmannschaft - ein Herz und eine Seele und eine fast unschlagbare musikalische Supermacht voll im Saft, groß in Form. Im Juni 1999 hatten ihn die Berliner zu ihrem Chef gewählt. als Nachfolger des Italieners Oaudio Abbado und in einem Stichentscheid gegen Da-niel Barenboim - und diesmal hatte sich der Erwählte nicht länger ge-ziert. Drei Jahre später, Anfang September dieses Jahres, hat Rattle nun sein Amt angetreten und in der Berliner Philharmonie die Zukunft ein-geläutet - mit Kuhglocken. Denn mit geheimnisvollem Gebimmel hebt jenes “Asyla“ genannte Opus 17 an, das Rattles junger Landsmann Thomas Ades komponiert und mit dessen Darbietung der neue Chefdirigent seine Amtszeit eröffnet hat. im Beisein von Bundespräsident Jo-hannes Rau und der ganzen Haute Culture aus Deutschlands quirliger Hauptstadt.

It wasn't exactly love at first sight, when, in 1989, the Berlin Philharmonic was deprived over night of its legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan, who had just passed away, and had to look for a successor, Simon Rattle's telephone rang. The astonished Briton told the equally astonished Berliners that he was “very flattered”, but considered himself too young for “the holy chair” of classical music. That was, good for him, the renounciation of the throne by a man, who had not even turned 35. Even shortly afterwards, when Simon Rattle turned up for his first guest appearances they did not hit it off straight away. Plans to make a record fell through because the orchestra changed the musicians, thus upsetting the conductor. The Philharmonic Orchestra's premiere of the (posthumously completed) tenth Mahler symphony was cancelled because the musicians did not like the work. Furthermore, tempers were raised during the rehearsals of a Haydn score because some of the string players simply went home. When Simon Rattle took his first steps into Berlin's 1 Herbert von Karajan Straße, home to Germany's finest and best paid orchestra, he was not welcomed with open arms. Yet now, in the autumn of 2002, Simon Rattle and the Berliners – Her Majesty's titled curly-head and Germany's musical national team – are best of friends. They are an almost unbeatable musical duo – full of zest and in great shape. The Berliners had chosen him to be their chief conductor in june 1999, succeeding the Italian Claudio Abbado, and winning the casting vote against Daniel Barenboim – and this time the chosen candidate no longer made a fuss. Three years later, in september this year, Rattle took up office and rang in the future for Berlin's Philharmonic Orchestra – using cow bells. Mysterious bell ringing marks the beginning of Opus 17, called “Asyla”, which was composed by Simon Rattle's compatriot Thomas Ades. This was the piece chosen by the new chief conductor to open his term of office in the presence of the German Federal Presiden Johannes Rau and the entire high society of Germany's vibrant capital city.
