Im Gegensatz dazu ist eine Infektion zahlreicher pazifischer Acropora-Arten beschrieben worden. First reports on diseases affecting stony corals appeared about the middle of the 1970s perio. These included the so-called 'Black Band Disease' (abbreviated: BBD), described from the reefs off Belize and those of the Bermudas, later also from large parts of the Caribbean and the Indo-Pacific and finally from the Red Sea. In the Caribbean, mainly the massive stony corals of family Faviidae were affected, while the Caribbean Acropora species appear to be resistant to this disease. By contrast, infections of numerous Pacific species have been described. Apart from stony corals, fire- and gorgonian corals can also become infected by BBD. |
