I remember reading once that some fellows use language to conceal thought, but it's been my experience that a good many more use it instead of thought.
A businessman's conversation should be regulated by fewer and simpler rules than any other function of the human animal. They are:
Have something to say.
Say it.
Stop talking.
Beginning before you know what you want to say and keeping on after you have said it lands a merchant in a lawsuit or the poorhouse, and the first is a short cut to the second. I maintain a legal department here, and it costs a lot of money, but it's to keep me from going to law.
It's all right when you are calling on a girl or talking with friends after dinner to run a conversation like a Sunday-school excursion, with stops to pick flowers; but in the office your sentences should be the shortest distance possible between periods. Cut out the introduction and the peroration, and stop before you get to secondly. You've got to preach short sermons to catch sinners; and deacons won't believe they need long ones themselves. Give fools the first and women the last word. The meat's always in the middle of the sandwich. Of course, a light butter on either side of it doesn't do any harm if it's intended for a man who likes butter.
Remember, too, that it's easier to look wise than to talk wisdom. Say less than the other fellow and listen more than you talk; for when a man's listening he isn't telling on himself and he's flattering the fellow who is. Give most men a good listener and most women enough note-paper and they'll tell all they know. Money talks -- but not unless its owner has a loose tongue, and then its remarks are always offensive. Κάποτε διάβασα ότι κάποιοι μιλούν για να κρύψουν αυτά που σκέφτονται· εγώ θα σου πω ότι άλλοι τόσοι μιλούν αντί να σκέφτονται.
Οι κουβέντες του επιχειρηματία υπακούν σε λιγότερους κανόνες από οποιαδήποτε άλλη λειτουργία του ανθρώπινου ζώου. Νά, ποιοί είναι:
Μίλα όταν έχεις κάτι να πεις.
Πες το.
Σώπασε.
Ο έμπορος που αρχίζει να μιλά χωρίς να ξέρει τι θέλει να πει, και συνεχίζει αφού είπε ό,τι είχε να πει, θα καταλήξει είτε στο δικαστήριο είτε στο πτωχοκομείο, για να μην πω ότι τις περισσότερες φορές το ένα είναι η φυσική συνέχεια του άλλου. Το νομικό τμήμα της εταιρείας μου κοστίζει πολλά, αλλά το προτιμώ από τα δικαστήρια· αυτά κοστίζουν περισσότερο.
Δεν πειράζει αν με τις δεσποινίδες ή τους φίλους σου μετά το δείπνο οι κουβέντες σου μοιάζουν με εκδρομές του Κατηχητικού, που στη διαδρομή σταματούν για να μαζέψουν λουλούδια, στο γραφείο όμως τα λόγια σου να είναι μετρημένα. Κόψε την εισαγωγή και τον επίλογο, και μη μακρηγορείς. Ο παπάς που λέει πολλά λειτουργεί μόνος του. Άσε στους ανόητους τον πρώτο λόγο και στις γυναίκες τον τελευταίο – το κρέας είναι στη μέση της πίτας. Τα βουτυρωμένα φύλλα είναι γι αυτούς που τους αρέσει το βούτυρο.
Μην ξεχνάς ότι είναι ευκολότερο να δείχνεις σοφός από το να λες σοφές κουβέντες. Λέγε λιγότερα από το συνομιλητή σου και άκου αντί να μιλάς, μιας κι αυτός που ακούει δεν αποκαλύπτεται ενώ κολακεύει αυτόν που μιλά και προδίδεται. Δώσε στους περισσότερους άντρες έναν καλό ακροατή και στις γυναίκες ένα γερό πάκο χαρτί και θα σου πουν ό,τι ξέρουν. Το χρήμα μιλάει, εκτός κι αν αυτός που το έχει δεν μπορεί να συγκρατήσει τη γλώσσα του· τότε το χρήμα προσβάλλει. Κι η φτώχεια μιλάει, όμως ποιός θέλει να την ακούσει;

Achieving the right result (the one that honours both the source and the target language without compromising the accuracy of the message) is a time-consuming and energy-draining process, but this is the only way I want to do my job.
