These guns are carried by policemen in short-sleeved shirts and black flak-jackets, alert for terrorists about to blow up Tie-Rack. They are unlikely to confront me directly, but if they do I shall tell them the truth. I shall state my business. I’m planning to stop at Heathrow Airport until I see someone I know. (...)
Astonishingly, I wait for thirty-nine minutes and don’t see one person I know. Not one, and no-one knows me. I’m as anonymous as the drivers with their universal name-cards (some surnames I know), except the drivers are better dressed. Since the kids, whatever I wear looks like pyjamas. I hear myself thinking about all the people I know who have let me down by not leaving early on a Tuesday morning for glamorous European destinations. My former colleagues from the insurance office must still be stuck at their desks, like I always said they would be, when I was stuck there too, wasting my time and unable to settle while Ally moved steadily onward, getting her PhD and her first research fellowship at Reading University, her first promotion.
Our more recent grown-up friends, who have serious jobs and who therefore I half expect to be seeing any moment now, tell me that home-making is a perfectly decent occupation for a man, courageous even, yes, manly to stay at home with the kids. These friends of ours are primarily Ally’s friends. I don’t seem to know anyone anymore, and away from the children and the overhead planes, hearing myself think, I hear the thoughts of a whinger. This is not what I had been hoping to hear.
I start crying, not grimacing or sobbing, just big silent tears rolling down my cheeks. I don’t want anyone I know to see me crying, because I’m not the kind of person who cracks up at Heathrow airport some nothing Tuesday morning. I manage our house impeccably, like a business. After we have driven for about four hours since leaving Ahmedabad the highway meanders into a narrower, bumpier road and the landscape is flat and stark, these being the edges of the salt deserts of Kutch. The soil has a parched white texture and the vegetation consists of the ubiquitous babul, shrub-like and spreading all the way to the far horizon. The babul, I am told, is not natural to this region. It was planted by some government officials to stop the spread of the desert. It has, ever since, been a losing battle to stop the spread of the babul. This sturdy plant has an ability to dry up the soil and has contributed to the precariously low water table of the region dropping even lower and beyond the reach of dug and tube wells. On the feeble plus side, the babul emits a gum that can be used as binding material, and its branches provide a ready supply of firewood. The gum comes in small quantities and huge amounts of time have to be spent to collect a few rupees worth of gum. For the poor inhabitants of the region this has ensured that survival will depend on a life of perennial foraging—for water, firewood and gum. | Translation - Italian

After completing the external analysis, managers should assess the company’s internal capabilities and performance. One approach is to use Michael Porter’s value chain model, categorizing capabilities in the processes that create markets; develop, produce, and deliver products and services; and sell to customers. Or the internal analysis could identify the unique resources and capabilities that give the company a distinctive competitive advantage. Finally, unless managers are introducing an entirely new strategy, they will want to review the performance of the current strategy, a topic we’ll discuss later.
The next step is to summarize the conclusions from the external and internal analyses in a classic SWOT matrix, assessing the ability of internal attributes and external factors to help or hinder the company’s achievement of its vision. The aim here is to ensure that the strategy leverages internal strengths to pursue external opportunities, while countering weaknesses and threats (internal and external factors that undermine successful strategy execution). This analysis will reveal a series of issues that the strategy must address: the best role for new products and services; whether new partners need to be acquired; what new market segments the company might enter; and which customer segments are contracting. These issues will become the focus of the strategy formulation process, which often takes place at a subsequent meeting.

Un possibile approccio è quello di usare il modello della catena del valore (value chain model) proposto da Michael Porter, suddividendo le competenze in diverse categorie: processi di creazione di nuovi mercati; processi di sviluppo, produzione e distribuzione di beni e servizi; e processi di vendita. In alternativa, l’analisi interna potrebbe identificare le risorse e le competenze distintive che conferiscono all’impresa un vantaggio competitivo. Goodwill
The Group has exercised the exemption available under IFRS 1 not to restate business combinations prior to the date of transition of the Group’s reporting GAAP from UK GAAP to IFRS. Under UK GAAP, goodwill arising on acquisitions before 1998 accounted for under the purchase method was eliminated against equity, and under IFRS, on future disposal or closure of a business, any goodwill previously taken directly to equity under a former GAAP will not be charged against income. Under UK GAAP, goodwill arising on acquisitions from 1998 was capitalised and amortised over a period not exceeding 20 years. On the date of the Group’s transition to IFRS, 1st January 2003, amortisation ceased in accordance with IFRS 3 ‘Business combinations’. The Group must instead identify and value its reporting units for the purpose of assessing, at least annually, potential impairment of goodwill allocated to each reporting unit. As permitted
by the business combinations exemption available under IFRS 1, amortisation arising prior to 2003 was not reversed.
Under US GAAP, goodwill arising on acquisitions prior to 30th June 2001 was capitalised and
amortised over a period not exceeding 40 years. In July 2001, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued Statement of Financial Accounting Standard (SFAS) 142, ‘Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets’.
Like IFRS 3, SFAS 142 requires that goodwill must not be amortised and that annual impairment tests of goodwill must be undertaken. The implementation of SFAS 142 in 2002, a year earlier than the Group’s transition to IFRS, results in goodwill balances acquired between 1998 and 2003 reflecting one year less of amortisation under US GAAP than under IFRS. | Translation - Italian

Il Gruppo si è avvalso del provvedimento contenuto nell’IFRS 1 che esenta dal rideterminare le aggregazioni aziendali antecedenti alla data della transizione del Gruppo dai principi contabili britannici ai principi IFRS. In ottemperanza ai principi contabili britannici, l’avviamento generato dalle acquisizioni effettuate prima del 1998 e rilevate contabilmente in base al metodo dell’acquisizione è stato portato direttamente in detrazione al patrimonio netto; in base agli IFRS, a seguito della futura cessione o cessazione di un’attività operativa, l’avviamento precedentemente portato in detrazione al patrimonio netto conformemente ai principi contabili prima adottati non verrà imputato a conto economico. In ottemperanza ai principi contabili britannici, l’avviamento generato dalle acquisizioni posteriormente al 1998 è stato capitalizzato e ammortizzato su un periodo non superiore a 20 anni. Alla data della transizione del gruppo agli IFRS, il 1° gennaio 2003, l’ammortamento è stato interrotto conformemente a quanto previsto dall’IFRS 3, Aggregazioni aziendali. Come l’IFRS 3, lo SFAS 142 stabilisce che non si debba ammortizzare l’avviamento ma che si debba procedere a effettuare verifiche annuali per riduzioni durevoli di valore. In 2002 I moved to Milan, Italy, where I worked as an IT assistant and database manager in the Centre for Research on Innovation and Internationalization of Bocconi University; in 2003 I moved to Barcelona, Spain, where I worked as a part-time researcher and consultant at the Gabinet d’Estudis Socials, as well as doing my first assignments a freelance translator. I am currently based in Rome.
