The problem may require major surgery or could possibly be solved by doing something as simple as rehanging a door on the opposite axis.
Before deciding upon individual room treatments, it is a good idea to make sure that you have the rooms you need, that they are of the right size and that they are in the right place. A sketch (roughly to scale) of a floor plan for each floor together with the overall measurements of each room shoul help to throw up any fundamental problems - such as the dining room being too remote from the kitchen or there being too little space for a decent-sized living room for the family. It might also suggest some solutions - like how a small bedroom might be joined to an adjacent larger bedroom to form an en-suite bathroom. Once you have allocated each room to its purpose, it is time to deal with the rooms individually.
Drawing up room plans is where most designers start in their quest to achieve a workable space. This allows them to explore the possibilities of the space and to come to terms with its limitations. Professional plans are expertly drafted and tend to look highly technical - beyond the scope of most amateurs - but are, in their most basic forms, simply a way of communicating ideas in a graphic medium.
