Source text - Greek Ο βαθμός μηδέν της ύπαρξης (Για τον Βrillante Mendoza) του Νίκου Σαββάτη Kινητήρια δύναμη για την αναβίωση του φιλιππινέζικου σινεμά στον 21ο αιώνα, ο Μπριγιάντε Μεντόζα (Brillante Mendoza), ολοκληρώνοντας μια ριψοκίνδυνη φιλμογραφία εννέα ταινιών σε τέσσερα χρόνια, κατάφερε να γίνει ένας από τους ισχυρότερους εκπροσώπους του τρίτου κινηματογράφου στα διεθνή φεστιβάλ. Στις Κάννες, φέτος η προτελευταία ταινία του Kinatay κέρδισε το βραβείο σκηνοθεσίας, τη μεγαλύτερη διάκριση στην ιστορία του φιλιππινέζικου κινηματογράφου, που ως τότε είχε τιμηθεί μόνο με τις υποψηφιότητες του Λίνο Μπροκά (Lino Brocka). Όμως η επιβράβευση της φρέσκιας ματιάς αυτού του αυθεντικού δημιουργού, που καταγράφει με τον σκληρό νεορεαλισμό της ψηφιακής εποχής τη δυσκολία των μη προνομιούχων να επιβιώσουν χωρίς να ξεπουληθούν ψυχή τε και σώματι, δεν ήρθε χωρίς αντιδράσεις. Η σκοτεινή ιστορία που αφηγείται το Kinatay (η άγρια δολοφονία μιας τοξικομανούς πόρνης) προκάλεσε το θεματοφύλακα της αμερικανικής mainstream αισθητικής Ρότζερ Έμπερτ (Roger Ebert) να το αποκαλέσει το χειρότερο φιλμ στην ιστορία της διοργάνωσης και να υποδείξει στον Μεντόζα ότι «θα πρέπει να ξαναγυρίσει όλο το δεύτερο μέρος του». Ευτυχώς ο σκηνοθέτης όχι μόνο δεν πτοήθηκε από τις επιθέσεις, αλλά αιφνιδίασε υποστηρικτές και επικριτές παρουσιάζοντας στο διαγωνιστικό του Φεστιβάλ Βενετίας-μόλις τέσσερις μήνες μετά από τις Κάννες- την τελευταία του ταινία Lola, το πιο συγκινητικό κοινωνικό του (μελό)δραμα. Οι θεαματικές εναλλαγές και αντιθέσεις ανάμεσα στα είδη, το υλικό και το ύφος των ταινιών αποτελούν έναν από τους θεμελιώδεις νόμους στο έργο του αυτοδίδακτου σκηνοθέτη, που αν και προέρχεται από τον κόσμο του ντιζάιν, της καλλιτεχνικής διεύθυνσης και της διαφήμισης, διαχωρίζεται ριζικά από αυτόν θέτοντας ως δημιουργική του προτεραιότητα την αυθεντικότητα της αναπαράστασης. «Αν δείτε παλιότερα φιλμ μου, π.χ. το Kaleldo ή το Masahista, θα καταλάβετε ότι το στυλ υπαγορεύεται από το είδος της ιστορίας που προσπαθώ να αφηγηθώ. Θέλω να είμαι αντικειμενικός και αληθινός. Αν συγκεντρωθώ υπερβολικά σε κάποιο σκηνοθετικό στυλ, επειδή το κοινό έχει αρχίσει να το αναγνωρίζει ή να το περιμένει ή επειδή πιέζομαι να δουλεύω με τον ίδιο τρόπο, θα καταλήξω πολύ προβλέψιμος. Για μένα είναι πολύ πιο λειτουργικό να εφευρίσκω διαφορετικό ύφος σε κάθε ταινία, ώστε να είμαι όσο το δυνατόν πιο αληθινός»1. Ωστόσο αυτή η δήλωση δε σημαίνει ότι οι θεματικές και στιλιστικές επιλογές του Μεντόζα είναι άπειρες, γιατί τελικά οι «συνθετικές» 1 Από μια συνέντευξη με τον Sean Uyehara, που έγινε στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Ασιατικού Αμερικανικού Κινηματογράφου του Σαν Φρανσίσκο, στις 18. 3. 2008 2 από αντιφατικά υλικά ταινίες του ισορροπούν κάπου ανάμεσα στο κοινωνικό/οικογενειακό δράμα και τη ντοκιμαντερίστικη σπουδή ενός περιθωριακού χώρου. Ο Masahista, το ατμοσφαιρικό σκηνοθετικό ντεμπούτο του δημιουργού στα 45 του χρόνια, βυθίζεται ηδονικά στο ημίφως ενός στούντιο μασάζ για ομοφυλόφιλους και ζωγραφίζει, χωρίς σεμνοτυφία ή ηθικολογία αλλά με συγκρατημένη μελαγχολία, το πορτραίτο ενός νεαρού μασέρ αντιπαραθέτοντας με παράλληλο μοντάζ δυο αφηγηματικές τάξεις: τη σεξουαλική συνάντηση του πρωταγωνιστή με έναν ξεχωριστό πελάτη, έναν ώριμο και χειριστικό συγγραφέα και την παγερή αναπαράσταση της κηδείας του ανάξιου και μέθυσου πατέρα του. Πιο «καθαρόαιμο» οικογενειακό δράμα είναι η επόμενη ταινία, το γυναικείο Kaleldo (2006), με ηρωίδες τρεις αδελφές η κάθε μία από τις οποίες συγκρούεται διαφορετικά με την παραδοσιακή αντίληψη του γάμου, την οικογένεια και τη δεσποτική φιγούρα του πατέρα. Βασισμένο σ’ ένα σενάριο πιο δομικό από αυτό του Masahista, το Kaleldo οργανώνει τη μυθοπλασία σε τρίπτυχο, όπου σε κάθε μέρος πρωταγωνιστεί μια διαφορετική αδελφή και χρονογραφεί επεισόδια που διαδραματίζονται σε επτά καλοκαίρια: τις γαμήλιες δυσλειτουργίες των δύο νεώτερων γυναικών, τη λεσβιακή επανάσταση της μεγαλύτερης, την αρρώστια και το θάνατο του πατέρα- έναν ολοκληρωμένο κύκλο (οικογενειακής) ζωής, σκηνοθετημένο με την πιο λουστραρισμένη αισθητική σε όλο το έργο του Μεντόζα. Εικόνες εξαθλίωσης Αν οι δυο πρώτες ταινίες του δημιουργού στηρίζονταν σε μια ισχυρή επένδυση στο θέμα, (στο σεξ, το Masahista) ή στο σενάριο και το στυλιζάρισμα της σκηνοθεσίας (το Kaleldo), η τρίτη του είναι μια απόλυτη αλλαγή κατεύθυνσης και οπτικής γωνίας. Το μικρό, προσωπικό φιλμ Manoro (2006) με τη χαλαρή, σχεδόν αδιόρατη, δραματουργία του γυρίστηκε από τον ίδιο τον Μεντόζα σε ντοκιμαντερίστικα μονοπλάνα με ψηφιακή κάμερα μέσα σε πέντε μέρες. Παρόλο που, όπως στο Kaleldo, το βασικό θέμα είναι η οικογένεια, εδώ η μινιμαλιστική ιστορία εστιάζει στην ενότητα κι όχι τη σταδιακή διάλυσή της από το πέρασμα του χρόνου και τις αναπόφευκτες αλλαγές των αντιλήψεων. Μόλις τελειώνει το δημοτικό, η νεαρή πρωταγωνίστρια (Jonalyn) Τζόναλιν, μέλος της παλιάς και ξεχασμένης κοινότητας των ορεσίβιων και αναλφάβητων (Aeta) Αέτα, προσπαθεί να τους μάθει να γράφουν, ώστε να μπορέσουν να ψηφίσουν στις εκλογές και να συμμετάσχουν για πρώτη φορά στις δημοκρατικές διαδικασίες της χώρας. Φυσικά για να μάθουν πραγματικά να γράφουν κι όχι να αναπαράγουν τα σχήματα των γραμμάτων στα ονόματα των υποψηφίων χρειάζεται πολύς χρόνος και το κορίτσι δεν τον έχει, επειδή στο μικρό διάστημα που μεσολαβεί ως τις εκλογές πρέπει μαζί με τον πατέρα του να αναζητήσει τον παππού του που έχει εξαφανιστεί κυνηγώντας στο δάσος. Αφιερώνοντας το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ταινίας στην αναζήτηση του παππού από την κόρη και τον πατέρα, ο Μεντόζα βρίσκει την ευκαιρία να πειραματιστεί με 3 τους φυσικούς χώρους και τον πραγματικό χρόνο. Αντίθετα το Pantasya, που ακολουθεί αμέσως μετά, κινηματογραφεί όχι την πραγματικότητα- όπως όλες οι ταινίες του Μεντόζα- αλλά τη φαντασίωση και την (ανεκπλήρωτη) επιθυμία κάνοντας ένα παιγνιώδες σχόλιο στο μαλακό πορνό. Επιστροφή στην τολμηρή θεματολογία του Masahista, η ταινία αρθρώνεται από πέντε μονολόγους ομοφυλόφιλων. Ένας ταξιτζής, ένας ιδιοκτήτης διαμερίσματος με χαλασμένο τηλέφωνο, ένας ηδονοβλεψίας στα ντους μιας ομάδας μπάσκετ, ένας νυχτοφύλακας και ένας νεαρός που παραδίδει πίτσες παραδίνονται σε σεξουαλικές ονειροφαντασίες με ανθρώπους με τους οποίους διασταυρώνονται τυχαία στην καθημερινότητά τους. Η δημιουργική ταυτότητα του Μεντόζα αποκρυσταλλώνεται στις πέντε ώριμες ταινίες, γυρισμένες ανάμεσα στο 2007 και το 2009, που συγκροτούν τον κύριο κορμό του έργου του και τον αποκάλυψαν στη Δύση. Παρά τις μεταξύ τους διαφορές, παρότι αναμειγνύουν τόσο απρόβλεπτα τα είδη που μοιάζουν ακατάτακτες, όλες οι ταινίες είναι αφηγηματικές ροές με απόλυτη γραμμικότητα και αυστηρή χωροχρονική ενότητα. Το Foster Chil, μια δραματική κομεντί χαρακτήρων φιλμαρισμένη με την ηθική τού cinema verité που δεν αποκλείει τη συγκίνηση, αφηγείται την τελευταία μέρα της τρίχρονης σχέσης ανάμεσα στη (Thelma) Θέλμα, μια κατ’ επάγγελμα θετή μητέρα, και τον Τζoν-Τζoν, τον γλυκύτατο θετό γιο της. Χωρίς να ενδώσει στο εύκολο μελόδραμα της κατάστασης, ο Μεντόζα αποκαλύπτει το μηχανισμό του συστήματος των υιοθεσιών στις Φιλιππίνες συνοψίζοντάς τον σε μια διαδρομή με όλα τα μεταφορικά μέσα που διασχίζει την τεράστια αγορά κορμιών και ψυχών της Μανίλα απ’ άκρη σ’ άκρη: από μια δαιδαλώδη φτωχογειτονιά σ’ ένα απαστράπτον ξενοδοχείο. Η (Thelma) Θέλμα έμμισθη, μόνιμη και καλή συνεργάτης μιας οργάνωσης, που της εξασφαλίζει ένα παιδί κάθε τρία χρόνια και μια έξτρα αμοιβή όταν το παραδίδει στους τελικούς θετούς γονείς του, ξεκινάει από το σπίτι μαζί με τον φυσικό γιο και την προϊσταμένη της, για να φέρει τον (John-John) Τζον-Τζον σ’ ένα ζευγάρι πλούσιων, μεσηλίκων Αμερικανών. Η μεγάλη σεκάνς του αποχαιρετισμού της θετής μάνας στη σουίτα του ξενοδοχείου γλιστράει αβίαστα σε νευρική κωμωδία σε δυο γλώσσες και κορυφώνεται όταν η (Thelma) Θέλμα, προσπαθώντας να πλύνει τον (John-John) Τζον-Τζον που έχει «βρέξει» τον ευυπόληπτο καινούριο πατέρα του, κυριολεκτικά τα κάνει μούσκεμα. Της είναι αδύνατον να χειριστεί τα περίπλοκα υδραυλικά στο μπάνιο της σουίτας, που σε σύγκριση με το δικό της στοιχειώδες σπίτι μοιάζει να βρίσκεται σε άλλο πλανήτη. Λίγο αργότερα, βγαίνοντας από το ξενοδοχείο και μη μπορώντας να προσανατολιστεί, ξεσπάει όταν ανακαλύπτει ότι έχει ξεχάσει κάτι από τα προσωπικά αντικείμενα του παιδιού. Μολονότι επιτελεί θεάρεστο έργο -όπως αποφαίνεται μια μοναχή που η (Thelma) Θέλμα συναντάει στη διαδρομή- το επάγγελμά της δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο από ένα κυνικό εμπόριο ζωής που απλά της εξασφαλίζει μια οριακή επιβίωση στο περιθώριο και ταυτόχρονα τη βυθίζει στο ψυχικό μαρτύριο. 4 Ακόμα πιο χαμηλά από το επίπεδο της (Thelma) Θέλμα, οι ήρωες του πολυφωνικού Tirador, φυτοζωούν (ως καταληψίες;) σε άθλια κτίσματα της περιοχής (Quiapo) Κιάπο της Μανίλας, ανάμεσα στις συμπληγάδες της πολιτικής και της θρησκείας, που παρά τις φρούδες ελπίδες δεν έχουν καταφέρει να τους λυτρώσουν από τη μιζέρια και την παρακμή. Ενώ εξελίσσονται η προεκλογική εκστρατεία ενός διεφθαρμένου ψηφοθήρα πολιτικού και η μεγάλη θρησκευτική γιορτή του Σαν Ναζαρένο (η χαρά του πορτοφολά!), όλοι οι πρωταγωνιστές της ταινίας μοιραία γλιστρούν στο έγκλημα: εξασφαλίζουν τον άρτο τον επιούσιο κλέβοντας ό, τι μπορούν. Σε μια σκηνή ένας από τους νεαρούς olvidados του Μεντόζα αρπάζει το κολιέ μιας κοπέλας στο δρόμο κι απομακρύνεται σαν αστραπή. Λίγο πιο κάτω καταλαβαίνει ότι άρπαξε μια φτηνή απομίμηση. Με την ίδια ταχύτητα ξαναγυρίζει στο αποσβολωμένο θύμα του και επιστρέφει το κολιέ λέγοντας περιφρονητικά: «Ψεύτικο!». Σ’ ένα άλλο επεισόδιο, η «ωραία» της γειτονιάς πηγαίνει με το σύντροφό της σ’ ένα κατάστημα ηλεκτρονικών, κλέβει ένα dvd player, συλλαμβάνεται από τον ιδιοκτήτη, δίνει μια δακρύβρεκτη «παράσταση» και μόλις γλιτώνει από την παράδοση στην αστυνομία. Όμως φεύγοντας από το μαγαζί μέσα σ’ ένα καταρράκτη από κροκοδείλια δάκρυα και δουλοπρεπείς ευχαριστίες, δε χάνει την ευκαιρία να αρπάξει ένα ίδιο μηχάνημα από μια στοίβα στην έξοδο. Με τα λεφτά από την πώληση του κλοπιμαίου πληρώνει τη μασέλα που χρειάζεται, αλλά καθώς την καθαρίζει στο νεροχύτη του σπιτιού της, τής πέφτει από το χέρι και χάνεται μέσα στους ανοικτούς υπονόμους της γειτονιάς. Τέτοια μικροεπεισόδια αλληλοδιαδέχονται ταχύτατα και σχεδόν δεν προλαβαίνουν να κατακάτσουν στη μνήμη του θεατή. Συγκροτούν έναν σεναριακό ιστό που μοιάζει να εξελίσσεται και να μεταμορφώνεται διαρκώς, καθώς η ξέφρενη κινηματογράφηση με ψηφιακές κάμερες σβήνει ακόμα περισσότερο τη λεπτή κόκκινη γραμμή ανάμεσα στην αναπαράσταση και την πραγματικότητα, τη δραματοποίηση και το ντοκιμαντέρ. Η αρχική σεκάνς όπου μια διμοιρία αστυνομικών εισβάλλει σ’ ένα δαιδαλώδες κτίριο και, διακόπτοντας κάθε είδους σεξουαλικές συνευρέσεις ή παράνομες πράξεις, συλλαμβάνει όλους τους άνδρες εκτός από έναν που προσποιείται τον ετοιμοθάνατο, είναι ένα καθαρό κομμάτι σκηνοθετικής δεξιοτεχνίας. Φέρνει στο νου την επείγουσα εικονογραφία της Πόλης του Θεού(City of God) των Φερνάντο Μειρέγιες (Fernando Meirelles) και Κάτια Λουντ (Kátia Lund). Αλλά το Tirador είναι ένα συμπίλημα ιστοριών όπου κανένας δεν ξεφεύγει από την αθλιότητα ούτε σώζεται από τη φρίκη των συμμοριών για να γίνει φωτορεπόρτερ, όπως ό αφηγητής της Πόλης του Θεού. Και –ακόμα πιο σημαντικό- η σκηνοθεσία του δεν επιδιώκει να δημιουργήσει καμία παρηγορητική «εντύπωση–σινεμά», που θα εξισορροπούσε την ωμότητα της αφήγησης. Γυρισμένη σε 11 μόνο μέρες, αυτή η μικρή, έντιμη και απελπισμένη ταινία είναι περισσότερο μια κινούμενη βιτρίνα όπου εκτίθεται ανελέητα η ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη στο βαθμό μηδέν της. Εκτός από μερικά εξωτερικά στους δρόμους, ένα γραφικά παρακμασμένο πορνοσινεμά με το ειρωνικό όνομα Family (Οικογένεια) είναι ο μοναδικός χώρος του Serbis : ένας 5 σκηνογραφικός λαβύρινθος στην κυριολεξία, κινηματογραφημένος από την αεικίνητη κάμερα σε μακρόσυρτα, επαναληπτικά μονοπλάνα. Μέσα του, περικυκλωμένη ασφυκτικά από τη διάλυση, τη διαφθορά και την κακοφωνία της πόλης, στεγάζεται η μητριαρχική οικογένεια της ιδιοκτήτριας (Nanay Flor) Μαντάμ Φλορ, που χάνει τη δίκη διαζυγίου εις βάρος του δίγαμου συζύγου της. Η νομική διαδικασία απειλεί να διαλύσει την οικογένεια, αφού τα παιδιά, όπως ισχυρίζεται ο μεγάλος γιος που επισκέπτεται τη Φλορ μετά από την ακρόαση, έχουν συμφωνήσει κρυφά να μη στραφούν εναντίον του πατέρα τους. Η μεγάλη κόρη (Nayda) Ναϋντά, η κολώνα του σπιτιού και της επιχείρησης, έχει κι άλλους λόγους να είναι δυστυχισμένη. Αισθάνεται ξεπεσμένη γιατί, παρά τις σπουδές της στη νοσηλευτική, έχει παγιδευτεί σ’ ένα πορνοσινεμά, ένα γάμο που έκανε από ανάγκη, επειδή είχε μείνει έγκυος και τον ανεκπλήρωτο πόθο για τον εξάδελφό της (Ronald) Ρόναλντ, τον ερωτύλο μηχανικό προβολής. Έχοντας περιορίσει τον καλοκάγαθο σύζυγό της στην κουζίνα, υφίσταται αξιοπρεπώς την καθημερινή ρουτίνα της και δεν διανοείται να αναρωτηθεί αν ο σκανδαλώδης χορός από ομοφυλόφιλους, τραβεστί, και αρσενικές πόρνες που στέκονται στην είσοδο και τις σκάλες και παρακολουθούν τις οικογενειακές συγκρούσεις, όταν δεν ικανοποιούν τις επιθυμίες τους στη σκοτεινή αίθουσα ή σε κάποια στροφή των ατέλειωτων διαδρόμων του κτιρίου, είναι το κατάλληλο περιβάλλον για το αγοράκι της. Υπερβολικά ελλειπτικό για να λειτουργήσει ως οικογενειακό δράμα, το Serbis είναι περισσότερο μια «πειραματική» εγκατάσταση στο χώρο κάποιων προσώπων, που παρά τους συγγενικούς δεσμούς τους μοιάζουν να ζουν σε παράλληλους κόσμους. Η σκηνοθεσία παρακολουθεί άγρυπνα το ατέλειωτο πήγαινε έλα των προσώπων μέσα στο κτίριο, την απίστευτη σπατάλη ενέργειας με την οποία καλύπτουν τις αποστάσεις μεταξύ τους. Ωστόσο, παρά την ανελέητη παρακολούθηση ακόμα και στις πιο ιδιωτικές στιγμές τους (όταν κάνουν σεξ, πλένονται ή φροντίζουν ένα απόστημα), τα πρόσωπα δεν αποκαλύπτουν το μυστήριό τους -όπως άλλωστε και ο χώρος, που σαρώνεται από το φακό από τις σκάλες της εισόδου ως τις αηδιαστικά βουλωμένες τουαλέτες. Τελικά αυτός ο χώρος που τον βλέπουμε να μεγαλώνει πιο πολύ από τα πρόσωπα τι ακριβώς είναι; Η σκηνή ενός δράματος, όπου σταδιακά μια οικογένεια αποσυντίθεται, ή μιας σουρεαλιστικής φάρσας, όπου μια επιχείρηση καταρρέει σε τέτοιο βαθμό που ένα κατσικάκι εισβάλλει από τις τρύπες της μεσοτοιχίας προκαλώντας γενικό πανικό; Μια περίπλοκη κυριολεξία, ένα σινεμά-μπορντέλο, όπου το «πραγματικό» σεξ ανάμεσα στους πελάτες ή τους ιδιοκτήτες αντιπαρατίθεται στη πορνό «φαντασίωση» της οθόνης ή μήπως μια ευανάγνωστη μεταφορά της απόλυτα αγοραίας κοινωνίας βυθισμένης στον αμοραλισμό και την απόγνωση; Η ψυχρή τελική σκηνή, όπου ένας ανώνυμος πελάτης κάνει σχεδόν δημοσιογραφική ανάκριση σ’ έναν νεαρό που εκδίδεται, επιβεβαιώνει εκ των υστέρων το ότι αυτή η αμφίσημη ταινία είναι μια παράξενη προσέγγιση της πορνείας. 6 Η γιαγιά και η πόρνη Στο Kinatay μια πόρνη γίνεται το Θύμα της αγριότητας μιας κοινωνίας όπου τα σύνορα ανάμεσα στο καλό και το κακό έχουν καταργηθεί από πολύ καιρό. Βιάζεται και σφάζεται ανηλεώς, πληρώνοντας με τη ζωή της το υπέρογκο χρέος της για ναρκωτικά σ’ έναν εγκληματία αξιωματικό της αστυνομίας. Ακόμα χειρότερα, από αλληλεγγύη στον ανώτερό του συμμετέχει στην κτηνωδία ένας συμπαθής, αθώος, εικοσάχρονος μαθητευόμενος αστυνομικός που βαπτίζεται οδυνηρά στο βούρκο της διαφθοράς για να συμπληρώσει τον πενιχρό οικογενειακό του προϋπολογισμό. Το πρώτο μέρος του Kinatay είναι σχεδόν μια απατηλά φωτεινή οικογενειακή «κομεντί». Ενώ ξημερώνει ακόμα μια μέρα στη Μανίλα και οι δρόμοι γεμίζουν από σώματα, χρώματα, μεταφορικά μέσα κι εμπορεύματα, ο πρωταγωνιστής (Peping) Πεπίνγκ ετοιμάζεται να παντρευτεί τη σύντροφό του με την οποία έχει ήδη αποκτήσει ένα παιδάκι. Όμως το φάσμα της οικονομικής δυσχέρειας πλανιέται πάνω από τη διαδρομή των μελλονύμφων και τα αισιόδοξα στιγμιότυπα της τελετής στο δημαρχείο, που η κινητική, ανθρωπολογική κάμερα τα σταχυολογεί σε μεγάλες λήψεις. Όταν το γεύμα που παραθέτει ο γραφικός κουμπάρος τελειώνει και οι νεόνυμφοι χωρίζουν, ο (Peping) Πεπίνγκ παρακολουθεί αφηρημένος ένα μάθημα στη σχολή του. Μαζί με ένα συμφοιτητή του παίρνει το δρόμο της επιστροφής και το πρώτο μέρος κλείνει με το γενικό ενός λεωφορείου που απομακρύνεται. Αμέσως μετά ένα σκοτεινό, αιματοβαμμένο γενικό της δύσης του ήλιου μάς φέρνει με μια μεγάλη ποιητική έλλειψη στον κόσμο της νύχτας, όπου όλοι είναι ανυπεράσπιστοι και αναλώσιμοι σαν σφάγια στον πάγκο του χασάπη. Ήδη από την αρχή του μεγάλου νυχτερινού μέρους της ταινίας, ο (Peping) Πεπίνγκ έχει μεταμορφωθεί: τον βλέπουμε πρώτα να εισπράττει το μερίδιο της αστυνομίας από μικροπωλητές ουσιών στο δρόμο κι ύστερα να ακολουθεί το συνεργό του σε μια «σημαντική επιχείρηση». Όμως πολύ γρήγορα ανακαλύπτει με τρόμο ότι έχει συρθεί να συμμετάσχει σ’ ένα ιδιαζόντως ειδεχθές έγκλημα: την απαγωγή μιας πόρνης με το ειρωνικό ψευδώνυμο Μαντόνα, τον ξυλοδαρμό της μέχρι αναισθησίας στο φορτηγάκι που τη μεταφέρει σ’ ένα απομονωμένο κτίριο της υπηρεσίας κάπου έξω από τη Μανίλα, τον βιασμό της, τη σφαγή της και το διαμελισμό του πτώματος και τελικά τη διασπορά του σε διάφορα σημεία της πόλης, ώστε να καλυφθούν τα ίχνη των δραστών. Η βιαιότητα αυτής της ιστορίας-σοκ, βασισμένης σε πραγματικά περιστατικά, μπορεί εύκολα να χαρακτηριστεί ακραία, όπως έγινε από κάποιους στις Κάννες. Αλλά ακόμα περισσότερο στην ταινία ενοχλούν η απόλυτη απαισιοδοξία, η αμείλικτη γραμμικότητα και ο αδιαπραγμάτευτος ρεαλισμός τής κινηματογράφησης. Εμμένοντας να μπολιάσει με την προσωπική υπογραφή του το μεικτό είδος -το κοινωνικό θρίλερ τρόμου- το οποίο υπηρετεί, ο Μεντόζα επιδίδεται σε μια σπουδή του πραγματικού χρόνου, που γεννάει ένα βαρύτερο, σχεδόν αφόρητο, σασπένς και του 7 φυσικού φωτισμού (του αφώτιστου μάλλον), που συμβολίζει την κατάδυση του κεντρικού ήρωα και του θεατή στην καρδιά του σκότους. Στη σκηνή ανθολογίας όπου το θύμα δεμένο και φιμωμένο μεταφέρεται μ’ ένα φορτηγάκι στον τόπο του μαρτυρίου του- την περισσότερη ώρα εκτός κάδρου ή σχεδόν αόρατο στο σκοτάδι- η σκηνοθεσία περιορίζεται να καταγράψει την πορεία προς το θάνατο που διαρκεί μια αιωνιότητα, αντιπαραθέτοντας επαναληπτικά, κλειστοφοβικά κοντινά σε υποκειμενικά τράβελινγκ: το μισοφωτισμένο, σκαμμένο από το άγχος πρόσωπο του (Peping) Πεπίνγκ στη ρευστή και υποβλητική τοπιογραφία της νυχτερινής διαδρομής, που η τρομακτική ηχητική μπάντα την υπονομεύει, αποκαλύπτοντας συνεχώς τι συμβαίνει μέσα στο αυτοκίνητο. Ευτυχώς για την ευαισθησία του θεατή η απάνθρωπη σφαγή είναι φιλμαρισμένη σε ένα γενικό, μισοφωτισμένο υποκειμενικό πλάνο του πρωταγωνιστή, που λίγο πριν είχε αποπειραθεί να αποδράσει από το χώρο της σφαγής αλλά δεν το κατάφερε. Αλλά η φρίκη τον ακολουθεί στο αβέβαιο φως της επόμενης μέρας, όπου μαζεύοντας τα κομμάτια και τη βιασμένη ηθική συνείδησή του επιστρέφει στην καθημερινότητα. Το ταξί που τελικά θα τον φέρει πίσω στο σπίτι και το πρωινό που μαγειρεύει η γυναίκα του παθαίνει λάστιχο και ακινητοποιείται για μια μικρή αιωνιότητα στο πουθενά μιας πολυσύχναστης αρτηρίας. Το ότι η ζωή συνεχίζεται πέρα από το πένθος με τους συμβιβασμούς της επιβίωσης είναι η τραγική αλήθεια που έχουν μάθει στο πετσί τους οι δυο γιαγιάδες πρωταγωνίστριες της εντελώς διαφορετικής Lola. Όταν το πεπρωμένο τις διασταυρώνει, επειδή ο εγγονός της μίας σκοτώνει τον εγγονό της άλλης για ασήμαντη αφορμή, για να του κλέψει τα λεφτά και το κινητό, και οι δυο γυναίκες, παρότι χήρες και με κλονισμένη υγεία από τα γηρατειά, εξακολουθούν να παλεύουν για να στηρίξουν ό,τι απομένει όρθιο από τις οικογένειές τους. Το τραγικό περιστατικό τις εξισώνει στον ίδιο παρονομαστή της ανάγκης: πρέπει να συγκεντρώσουν χρήματα γρήγορα, η μεν για την κηδεία του θύματος η δε για το ενδεχόμενο ενός εξώδικου διακανονισμό της υπόθεσης ανάμεσα στις οικογένειες, όπως προβλέπει η δικαιοσύνη της χώρας. Σε παράλληλες αγωνιώδεις διαδρομές περνούν από αστυνομικά τμήματα, γραφεία κοινωνικών υπηρεσιών, παράνομες λαϊκές αγορές, δικαστήρια, σπίτια γειτόνων, συγγενών ή τοκογλύφων κάτω από κατακλυσμιαία βροχή που δε λέει να σταματήσει εμποδίζοντας κάθε τους βήμα και καθυστερώντας ακόμα και την ταφή. Μπροστά στο αδιέξοδο και το βαρύ χρέος, στο τέλος η γιαγιά του θύματος, μετά από την κηδεία συμβιβάζεται με το γεγονός ότι και οι δυο οικογένειες πρέπει να επιβιώσουν. Δέχεται το ποσό που η γιαγιά του δολοφόνου τής προσφέρει και ο δράστης αφήνεται ελεύθερος. Περνώντας από την ωμή απεικόνιση της εξαθλίωσης, την καταγραφή της παντοδύναμης διαφθοράς και την καταγγελία της αστυνομικής θηριωδίας, στην τελευταία του ταινία ο Μεντόζα αποπειράται ένα σχόλιο για τον παραλογισμό της δικαιοσύνης. Σκηνοθετώντας ένα σενάριο πιο πλούσιο σε αφηγηματικά ημιτόνια και ανάλυση χαρακτήρων, αποκαλύπτει μια 8 παλέτα συναισθημάτων που συχνά κρύβονταν πίσω από τη σκληρή αντικειμενικότητα των προηγούμενων ταινιών του. Στο Lola τα μεγάλα πένθιμα μονοπλάνα του πρώτου μέρους όταν η γιαγιά του νεκρού πασχίζει να ανάψει ένα κερί στο σημείο της δολοφονίας κόντρα στη μανία της θύελλας, ή όταν βουβή ακούει τον ιδιοκτήτη του γραφείου τελετών να απαγγέλλει σχεδόν τραγουδιστά τις τιμές των φέρετρων και αργότερα όταν η νεκρική πομπή διασχίζει με βάρκες ένα κανάλι, δεν είναι μόνο σπουδές πάνω στην κίνηση των ηθοποιών σε φυσικά ντεκόρ αλλά ακτινοβολούν μια βαθύτερη συγκίνηση. Ωστόσο η συγκίνηση εξατμίζεται όταν το ποσό που έχει συγκεντρωθεί με τόσο κόπο, η αποζημίωση για μια άσκοπα χαμένη ζωή, αλλάζει χέρια. Η παραίτηση της οικογένειας του νεκρού από την ποινική δίωξη αφήνει το θεατή σε παγερό κενό. Γιατί η ταινία, που η πρώτη της εικόνα είναι ένα γκρό πλαν του χαρτονομίσματος με το οποίο η γιαγιά του θύματος αγοράζει ένα κερί και η δραματουργία της υφαίνεται από λογαριασμούς, δάνεια, κλοπές, απάτες, δεν είναι μόνο μια ελεγεία στο αργό τέμπο των γηρατειών αλλά κι ένα δοκίμιο για τη φονική κυκλοφορία του χρήματος. Πίσω από τις μουντές και μουσκεμένες εικόνες της πλανιέται ένα απεγνωσμένο ερωτηματικό που ο Μπρεσόν (Bresson) το έχει διατυπώσει τόσο σοφά στο πολύ διαφορετικό αριστούργημά του (L’ Argent)Το χρήμα : «Ω χρήμα, ορατέ Θεέ και τι δε θα μας έβαζες να κάνουμε;»	Translation - English The Zero Degree of Existence (On Βrillante Mendoza) By Nikos Savvatis Brillante Mendoza, the driving force behind the revival of Philippine cinema in the 21st century, has also managed to become one of the most powerful exponents of the Third Cinema at international festivals, through an adventurous nine-film oeuvre he has created in just four years. He was awarded the best director prize this year at Cannes for his penultimate film Kinatay, the biggest distinction received by Philippine cinema history to date, which hitherto had been honoured only through nominations garnered by film director Lino Brocka. However, the decision to reward this fresh look by this original artist—in which the hard-edged neorealism of the digital age is used to record the struggle of the have-nots to survive without selling out body and soul—did not fail to spark reactions. The dark tale related by Kinatay—the gruesome murder of a drug-addicted prostitute—prompted Roger Ebert, the ‘guardian’ of American mainstream aesthetics, to label it the worst film in the history of the event and to suggest that “If Mendoza wants to please any viewer except for the most tortured theorist…he's going to have to remake his entire second half.” Fortunately, the director not only did not become disheartened by the attacks, but instead took supporters and detractors by surprise by presenting Lola—his latest film and most moving social (melo)drama to date—in competition at the Venice festival, just four months after Cannes. The spectacular alternations and contrasts between genres, subject matter and style in his films constitute one of the fundamental ‘laws’ upon which the work of this self-taught director is based. Despite his roots in the world of design, artistic direction and advertising, Mendoza is radically dissociated from it, setting the authenticity of depiction as his creative priority. “If you see some of my other films—Kaleldo, Masahista—you will see that the style is dictated by the kind of story I am trying to tell. I want to be objective and truthful. To be too concentrated on a certain directorial style, because the audience begins to recognize or expect it or there is pressure to keep working in a similar way, will become too predictable. For me, it is much more workable to develop different styles for each film I work on in order to be as truthful as possible about the story I am telling.”1 However, this statement does not mean that the thematic and stylistic choices made by Mendoza are infinite, because his films, which are ‘synthesized’ using contradictory materials, ultimately balance somewhere between social / family drama and a documentary-style study of areas on the fringes. 1 From an interview given to Sean Uyehara, at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, on 18/3/2008. 2 Masahista, the atmospheric directorial debut of the artist at the age of 45, hedonistically dives into the half-light of a massage studio for homosexuals and, without coyness or moral teachings but with a measured melancholy, paints the portrait of a young masseur. Mendoza juxtaposes, through parallel montage, two narratives: The sexual encounter between the protagonist and a special client—a mature and manipulative writer—, and the frigid portrayal of the funeral of his worthless, drunkard father. His follow-up effort, Kaleldo (2006), is a more ‘purebred’ family drama focusing on women. The heroines are three sisters, each of whom clashes in a different way with traditional perceptions concerning marriage, family and the authoritative father figure. Kaleldo is based on a script that is more structured than that of Masahista; the story is organised as a triad, with a different sister starring in each part. It traces some incidents that transpire over a period of seven summers—the marital dysfunctions of the two younger women, the lesbian rebellion of the eldest sister, and the illness and death of their father. It depicts a complete cycle of (family) life, directed with the glossiest style to be found in the entire oeuvre of Mendoza. Images of Wretchedness The first two films by this director relied heavily on either theme (sex, in the case of Masahista) or script and directorial stylisation (in Kaleldo); however, the third work signalled a complete change in direction and angle of view. The short, personal film Manoro (2006), with its loose—practically indiscernible—dramaturgy, was filmed by Mendoza himself in documentary-style single shots, using a digital camera, in just five days. Despite the fact that the main theme of the film is the family (as in Kaleldo), the minimalistic story focuses on the unity and not the gradual dissolution of the family caused by the passage of time and the unavoidable changes in viewpoints. In Manoro, the young protagonist Jonalyn, who belongs to the old, forgotten Aeta community of illiterate hill dwellers, finishes primary school and then tries to teach the members of her community how to write, so that they may be able to vote in elections and thus participate, for the first time, in the democratic process of the country. Naturally, a lot of time is needed for them to really learn to write and not simply reproduce the shapes of the letters found in the names of candidates; however, the girl does not have the proper amount of time, as in the brief period remaining ahead of the elections, she and her father must search for her grandfather, who has disappeared whilst hunting in the forest. By devoting the greater part of 3 the film to the search by the girl and her father for her missing grandfather, Mendoza finds the opportunity to experiment with natural spaces and real time. In contrast, the film Pantasya, which immediately follows, does not record reality—as all other Mendoza films do—but rather fantasy and (unfulfilled) desire, making a playful comment on soft porn. The film, which marks a return to the more daring subject matter found in Masahista, is composed of five monologues by homosexuals: A taxi driver, an owner of a flat whose phone is out of order, a voyeur in the showers of a basketball team, a night watchman and a young pizza delivery man all indulge in sexual fantasies with people they encounter by chance in their everyday lives. Mendoza’s creative identity became crystallised in the five mature works filmed between 2007 and 2009, which comprise the main body of his oeuvre and ‘unveiled’ him to the West. Despite the differences between these films, and even though they blend genres so unpredictably that they seem unclassifiable, all of them are narrative streams, absolutely linear and possess strict time-space unity. Foster Child, a dramatic comedy filmed with the philosophy of cinema verité without ruling out emotion, relates the story of the last day of the three-year relationship between Thelma, a professional foster mother, and John-John, her extremely sweet foster son. Without giving in to the easy melodrama afforded by the situation, Mendoza reveals the workings of the adoption system in the Philippines, summing it up with a run that uses all of the means of transport and cuts across Manila’s huge market of bodies and souls, from end to end: From a labyrinthine slum to a glittering hotel. In the film, Thelma is a paid, permanent and valuable employee of an organisation that guarantees her a child every three years and a bonus after she hands over the child to parents for permanent adoption. She sets off from her house with her biological son and her superior, so as to bring John-John to a pair of wealthy, middle-aged Americans. The long sequence in which the foster mother says goodbye in the hotel suite flows smoothly into a nervous comedy owing to the language barrier, and it peaks when Thelma, in an attempt to wash John-John (who has wet his respectable new father), literally makes a mess of things. It is impossible for her to use the complicated plumbing in the bathroom of the suite, which, in comparison to that found in her very basic house, looks like it is on another planet. A short time later, upon leaving the hotel and not being able to find her bearings, she erupts when she discovers that she has forgotten some of the personal items belonging to the boy. Though she carries out praiseworthy work—as a nun whom Thelma meets on the way tells her—her occupation is nothing more than a cynical trading in human life that simply secures for her a borderline survival on the fringes while, at the same time, sinking her into a world of mental anguish. 4 Living at an even lower level than that of Thelma are the protagonists of the polyphonic film Tirador. They scrape by (as squatters?) in squalid buildings in the Quiapo district of Manila, stuck between the clashing rocks of politics and religion, which, despite offering hopes (in vain), have not managed to deliver them from a life of misery and decay. And as the preelection campaign of a corrupt, canvassing politician and the great religious feast of San Nazareno (every pickpocket’s delight) both move into full swing, all of the protagonists of the film inevitably slide into the world of crime, securing their daily bread by stealing whatever they are able to. In one scene, one of Mendoza’s young olvidados (‘forgotten ones’) grabs the necklace of a young lady in a street and runs away in a flash. A bit further down he realises that he has grabbed a cheap imitation piece of jewellery. Running just as fast he returns to his dumbfounded victim and gives back the necklace, and contemptuously utters to her the word “Fake!” In another incident, the neighbourhood ‘beauty’ and her companion walk into a shop with electronic goods. There, she steals a DVD player, is arrested by the owner, gives a tearjerking performance and just barely saves her skin, spared from being handed over to the police. But on her way out of the shop, in a deluge of crocodile tears and servile thanks, she does not pass up on the opportunity to grab another device like the first from a pile near the exit. With the money she gets from the sale of the stolen player she pays for the denture she needs, but as she is cleaning it in the sink of her house it falls out of her hand and is lost in the open sewers of the neighbourhood. These types of minor incidents succeed one another so quickly that practically they are not given the chance to settle in the mind of the viewer. They form a script structure that seems as though it is continuously developing and being transformed, as the frantic filming with digital cameras erases, even more, the thin red line between depiction and reality, dramatisation and documentary. The opening sequence, in which a squad of police officers raids a labyrinthine building and, interrupting practically every kind of sexual encounter or illegal activity there is, arrests all of the men except one who feigns that he is dying, is a clear-cut piece of directorial virtuosity. It brings to mind the exigent image-making of City of God, directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund. But Tirador is a medley of stories where no one escapes abjection or is saved from the horror of gangs so as to become a photojournalist, as happens in the case of the narrator in City of God. And—even more importantly—the film’s directing does not seek to create any comforting ‘cinema impression’, which would counterbalance the rawness of the narration. Shot in only 11 days, this small, honest and desperate film is more a moving showcase where human existence is mercilessly exhibited in its zero degree. Apart from a few exterior street shots of a ‘quaintly decayed’ porno cinema with the ironic name of ‘Family’, the only area where Serbis takes place is in what is literally a set-designed 5 maze, filmed by a restless camera in long-drawn out repetitive single sequences. Matriarch Nanay Flor, who is the owner, lives inside this maze with her family, suffocatingly surrounded by dissolution, corruption and the cacophony of the city. She has lost her divorce case against her bigamist husband. The legal procedure threatens to break up the family, since the children—as the oldest son who visits Flor after the hearing claims—have secretly agreed not to turn against their father. The oldest daughter, Nayda, who is the pillar of the house and business, has some additional reasons to be unhappy: She feels degraded because, despite her studies in nursing, she has become trapped inside a porno cinema, in a marriage she has agreed to out of necessity, owing to pregnancy and also on account of her unfulfilled desire for her cousin Ronald, the amorous projectionist. Having confined her good-natured husband to the kitchen, she bears, with dignity, her daily routine and does not think of wondering whether this ‘scandalous’ place is a suitable environment for her little boy to grow up in, being as it is filled with homosexuals, transvestites and male prostitutes standing at the entrance and on the stairs, who watch family clashes when not satisfying their desires in the dark cinema hall or on some bend of the endless corridors of the building. Overly elliptical to be able to function as a family drama, Serbis is more of an ‘experimental’ installation in the world of some characters, who, in spite of their family ties, seem to live in parallel worlds. The directing vigilantly follows the interminable comings and goings of the figures in the building, and the incredible waste of energy in covering the distances separating them. However, despite the merciless surveillance of even their most private moments (as when having sex, washing themselves or taking care of a abscess), the figures do not reveal their mystery, just as the place does not, scanned as it is by the camera lens, from the stairs at the entrance to the disgustingly clogged-up toilets. So, at the end of the day, just what is this place we see getting bigger on account of the growing number of people? Is it the scene of a drama, in which a family is gradually decaying, or the scene of a surrealistic farce, in which a business is collapsing to such a degree that a goat barges in through the holes in a partition wall, igniting widespread panic? Is it a complex reality—a cinema / brothel—, in which ‘real’ sex between customers or owners is juxtaposed with the porno ‘fantasy’ of the screen, or is it perhaps a legible conveyance of commercial society to the extreme, steeped in amoralism and desolation? The cold closing scene, in which an anonymous client carries out a journalist-style interrogation of a young man who hustles, subsequently confirms that this ambiguous film takes a strange approach to prostitution. The Grandmother and the Prostitute 6 In Kinatay, a prostitute becomes the victim of the savagery of a society in which the borderlines between good and bad have long since been abolished. She is mercilessly raped and butchered, repaying with her life her enormous drug debt to a criminal police officer. Even worse, an innocent and likeable 20-year-old police cadet participates in this atrocity, in a show of solidarity towards his superior, receiving a painful baptism of fire in the gutter of corruption, in a bid to supplement his meagre family income. The first part of Kinatay comes close to being a deceptively luminous family comedy. As yet another day dawns in Manila and the streets begin to fill up with people, colours, vehicles and goods, the protagonist Peping prepares to marry his partner, with whom he has already brought a child into this world. However, the spectre of financial trouble hovers above the path of the couple-to-be and floats over the optimistic scenes of the ceremony at the city hall, which the moving, ‘anthropological’ camera gleans in long shots. After the dinner arranged by the colourful best man comes to an end and the newlyweds part, Peping inattentively follows a lesson at his school. In the company of a classmate he takes the road back, and the first part draws to a close with a long shot of a bus moving away. Immediately after this, in a great poetic ellipsis, a dark, blood-drenched long shot of the setting sun transports us to the world of night, where everyone is defenceless and expendable—slaughtered meat on a butcher’s bench. From the very beginning of the long nocturnal portion of the film, Peping’s character can already be seen to have changed. First, we see him collecting the police cut from small-time substance peddlers; then, he is shown following his colleague on an ‘important operation’. However, he very quickly discovers, to his horror, that he has been dragged in to take part in an especially nefarious crime: The kidnapping of a prostitute with the ironic pseudonym of Madonna, her physical beating to the point of unconsciousness in a small van transporting her to an isolated building (belonging to the police) located somewhere outside of Manila, her rape, slaughter, the dismemberment of her body and, finally, the scattering of its pieces throughout different parts of the city, in order that the trail of the perpetrators be covered up. The violence of this shocking story, which is based on real events, could easily be labelled extreme, as some did indeed do at Cannes. But what is even more so disturbing in the film is the absolute pessimism, the austere linearity and the non-negotiable realism of the cinematography. Mendoza insists on grafting the film with the mixed genre (social horror/ thriller) that he serves, putting his personal signature on it. He engages in a study of real time, which, in turn, spawns a heavier—almost unbearable—suspense. In addition, he examines natural light (or, rather, what is unlit), which symbolises the descent of the central figure and the viewer into the heart of darkness. In the ‘anthology scene’ where the victim, bound and gagged, is being transported in the van to her place of torment (most of the time out of the frame or almost invisible in the darkness), 7 the directing limits itself to recording the course leading towards death, which seemingly lasts an eternity. It repetitively juxtaposes claustrophobic close-ups in subjective dolly shots: The half-lit, anxiety-carved face of Peping within the fluid and imposing landscape of the nocturnal run. All of these are undermined by a terrifying soundtrack that continually reveals what is happening inside the vehicle. Fortunately for the sensitivity of the viewer, the inhuman slaughter is filmed using a half-lit, subjective long shot of the male protagonist, who a short time before had attempted to escape from the area of the murder but had not succeeded. However, the horror follows him into the uncertain light of the day ahead, in which he picks up the pieces and takes with him his violated moral conscience, returning to everyday life. The taxi that is to finally take him back home and to the breakfast his wife is preparing for him gets a tyre puncture and is grounded for a little eternity in the middle of nowhere in a busy thoroughfare. The notion that life goes on after mourning, with compromises made in the name of survival, is the tragic truth that the protagonists—two grandmothers—of Lola, a completely different film, have come to know extremely well. Fate makes their paths cross, as the grandson of one of the elderly women kills the grandson of the other for an insignificant reason—to rob him of his money and mobile phone. Both women, despite being widows and in frail health owing to age, continue to struggle to support whatever is left standing in their families. The tragic incident puts them on an even footing ruled by the common denominator of necessity: Both must get money together quickly—one for the funeral of the victim, the other to cover the possibility of an out-of-court compensation settlement of the case between the families involved, as laid down by the local justice system. Moving along agonising, parallel paths they pass through police stations, social services offices, illegal popular markets, courtrooms, the houses of neighbours, relatives and loan sharks, beneath a deluge that refuses to let up and hinders their every step, even delaying the burial. Faced with an impasse and a heavy debt, in the end the grandmother of the victim, after the funeral service, comes to terms with the fact that both families have to survive. She accepts the sum that the grandmother of the murderer offers, and the perpetrator is set free. After putting forth a raw depiction of abjection, recording almighty corruption and levelling charges against police brutality, in his latest film Mendoza attempts to make a comment on the irrationality of justice. Directing a script richer in narrative halftones and in the analysis of character, he reveals a palette of emotions that had often remained hidden behind the hard objectiveness of his previous films. In Lola, the long single funereal sequences of the first part, when the grandmother of the deceased struggles to light a candle at the murder scene against the furiousness of the storm, or when dumbfounded she hears the owner of the funeral office reciting the prices of coffins in an almost singing voice, or later when the funeral 8 procession crosses a channel in boats, are all not only studies on the movement of actors in natural settings but also radiate a deeper emotion. However, this emotion evaporates when the sum that has been gathered through so much effort—indemnity for a senselessly lost life—changes hands. The relinquishment on the part of the family of the deceased of the right to take criminal action leaves the viewer in a frigid void. This because the film—whose first image is a close-up of the banknote with which the grandmother of the victim buys a candle, and whose dramaturgy is woven through bills, loans, thefts and fraud—is not only an elegy to the slow tempo of old age but also an essay on the ‘deadly’ circulation of money. Behind its dull and drenched images hovers a desperate question mark that Bresson so wisely puts forward in L’ Argent, his very different masterpiece: “Oh money, you visible God! What wouldn’t we do in your name?”
