This continual harassment grows tiresome. I was in the midst of important studies, delicate magic that requires weeks of preparation and ritual." Kel'Thuzad had been forced to wait for hours, fuming at the insult, before he was permitted the bare courtesy of confronting his accusers. The group's apparent spokespersons, Drenden and Modera, had long been two of his most vocal critics. Nonetheless, they would not have launched this latest inquisition without support from Antonidas, who had yet to show himself. What was the old man up to?
Drenden snorted. "That's the first time I've heard your sort of magic called 'delicate.'"
"An ignorant opinion from an ignorant man," said Kel'Thuzad with cold precision.
A distant voice spoke to him then, the voice of a friend. By now its remarks had grown so familiar that they felt like his own thoughts. They fear and envy you. After all, thanks to this new course of study, you are continuing to gain in knowledge and power.
There was a sudden flash of light, and a scowling gray-haired archmage appeared in the hall. A small wooden chest was tucked under his arm. "I would not have believed it if I had not seen it myself. You have abused our patience for the last time, Kel'Thuzad."
"The venerable Antonidas graces us with his presence at last. I began to think you had fallen ill."
"Age frightens you, doesn't it?" Antonidas snapped. "You realize there's only one alternative."
Let him think so, if that comforts him.
Calming somewhat, Antonidas said, "As for my health, you need not have concerned yourself. I was merely busy elsewhere."
"Searching my chambers for evidence of forbidden magic? You should know better."
"True, your chambers bore no such evidence. The warehouses you own in the northlands, on the other hand..." Antonidas gave him a disgusted look.
Damn the man for being a self-righteous snoop. "You had no right--"
Antonidas tapped his staff to the floor, silencing him, and turned to the other magi. "He has turned the buildings into laboratories for a series of foul experiments. See for yourself, colleagues. Behold the fruit of his labors." He opened the chest and tilted it so that all could see.
The decaying remains of several rats. Two were still scrabbling clumsily at the sides of the chest in a vain attempt to escape. Several magi bolted to their feet, and there was a hubbub of dismay. Even the golden-haired high elf who had been sitting in the back of the room seemed startled, though Prince Kael'thas was a man whose age made that feat nearly impossible.
Turning back to the captive rats, Kel'Thuzad saw that they had collapsed and stopped moving. Another set of failures, apparently. No matter. Someday he would create a stable undead specimen. His hard work would be vindicated. It was only a matter of time.
There are loose threads in the spell that silences you. Shall I show you how to unravel it?
Time, and his unknown ally, whose enigmatic voice occasionally helped him to move one step closer to his goal. Show me, he thought.
A young woman arrived in another flash of light. As she went to stand by Antonidas, the high elf's gaze followed her with troubled, brooding intensity. But Jaina Proudmoore took no notice; she was utterly focused on her duties. The handsome prince didn't stand a chance.
Her vivid blue eyes spared Kel'Thuzad a curious glance. She took the box from Antonidas, who explained, "My apprentice will see to it that the chest and its contents are incinerated."
The woman inclined her head and teleported from the room. Across the room, the high elf frowned at the spot she had vacated. Under other circumstances, Kel'Thuzad might have found the silent drama amusing. However, left unchallenged, Antonidas was continuing his tirade. Mutely seething, Kel'Thuzad resumed his efforts to free himself.
"We have permitted this state of affairs long enough. Rapped his knuckles occasionally for his more questionable pursuits. Tried to guide him. Now we find he has been practicing evil magic. The name of the Kirin Tor is fast becoming a curse on the lips of the local villagers."
"You lie!" Kel'Thuzad burst out, and a few of the magi were his again, waiting for him to offer an explanation. "Peasants remember the Second War just as well as we do. Say what you like about the orcs; their warlocks wielded great power. Power against which we had precious little defense. We have an obligation: we must learn to wield and counter these magics ourselves."
"To form an army of dead rats, their unnatural existence measured in hours?" Antonidas asked dryly. "Yes, my boy, I found your journals, too. You kept quite detailed records regarding this abominable enterprise. You cannot mean to use these pathetic creatures against orcs. Assuming, of course, that the orcs should ever emerge from their current lethargy, escape the internment camps, and somehow manage to become a threat again."
"Being younger than you hardly qualifies me for boyhood," retorted Kel'Thuzad. "As for the rats, they are the gauge by which I measure my progress. It is a standard experimental technique."
A sigh. "I am aware that you spend most of your time in the north these days. Your increasingly lengthy absences were what caught my attention in the first place. Yet even you must have heard that the king's new tax has given rise to civil unrest. Your selfish pursuit of power could incite the peasantry to revolt. Lordaeron would be engulfed in civil war."
He hadn't known about the tax. Antonidas must be exaggerating. Besides, true magi would focus on matters of greater substance. "I will be more discreet," he offered, gritting his teeth.
"No amount of discretion could possibly hide a secret of this magnitude," said Drenden.
Modera added, "You know that we have always walked a fine line in order to protect our people without becoming a danger ourselves. We dare not sacrifice our humanity--not in appearance, and certainly not in truth. At best, your methods would see us condemned as heretics."
It was too much. "We've been called heretics for centuries. The church has never been fond of our methods. Such sentiments notwithstanding, we are still here."
She nodded. "Because we avoid dark magic, which leads to corruption and catastrophe."
"Because we are necessary!"
"Enough." Antonidas sounded weary. To Modera and Drenden, he added, "If words alone could have reached him, they would have done so before now."
"I have heard your words," Kel'Thuzad said in exasperation. "Merciful gods, I have heard them until I am sick of them! It is you who will not hear mine, and put aside your antiquated fea--"
"You mistake our purpose here today," interrupted Antonidas. "This is not a debate. At this moment, your properties are being thoroughly searched. All items tainted by dark magic will be confiscated and, once identified to our satisfaction, destroyed."
His nameless ally had warned him this might happen, but Kel'Thuzad had not believed. Strange. He felt almost relieved that events had come to this pass. The need for secrecy had limited the scope of his work, hindered his advancement.
"In light of the evidence," Antonidas said heavily, "King Terenas has agreed with our judgment. If you do not abandon this madness, you will be stripped of your rank and holdings, and you will be exiled from Dalaran--indeed, from all of Lordaeron."
His mind racing, Kel'Thuzad bowed and left the hall. Doubtless the Kirin Tor were keeping his so-called disgrace quiet, fearing repercussions should his actions become public knowledge. For once, their cowardice would work in his favor. His wealth would never line the king's coffers.

Me estoy cansando de este acoso continuo. Estaba en pleno estudio de delicada magia que requiere semanas de preparación y diversos rituales —Kel'Thuzad se vio obligado a esperar durante horas, exasperado por haber sido insultado, antes de que se le permitiera la mínima cortesía de explicarse ante sus acusadores. Los supuestos portavoces del grupo, Drenden y Modera, habían sido desde hacía tiempo sus críticos más fragorosos. No obstante, no habrían pronunciado esta última acusación sin el apoyo de Antonidas, que aparecería tarde o temprano. ¿Qué estaría tramando el anciano?
Drenden resopló. —Es la primera vez que oigo llamar “delicada” a ese tipo de magia.
—Una opinión ignorante de un hombre ignorante —dijo Kel'Thuzad con fría precisión.
Entonces, una voz distante le habló, una voz amiga. Sus comentarios le resultaban ya tan familiares que los consideraba como propios. "Te temen y envidian. Al fin y al cabo, gracias a estos nuevos estudios, seguirás adquiriendo nuevos conocimientos y poder."
De repente, hubo un destello, y un archimago de pelo gris con cara de pocos amigos apareció en la entrada. Bajo el brazo llevaba un pequeño cofre de madera. —De no haberlo visto por mí mismo, no lo habría creído. Una vez más, has vuelto a abusar de nuestra paciencia, Kel'Thuzad.
—El venerable Antonidas por fin nos deleita con su presencia. Empezaba a pensar que habrías enfermado.
—Te asusta la vejez, ¿no es cierto? —interrumpió Antonidas—. Un día te darás cuenta de que es inexorable.
Si eso le consuela, deja que opine así...
Como para tranquilizarlo, Antonidas añadió: —En cuanto a mi salud se refiere, no hay de qué preocuparse. Tan solo andaba ocupado en otros asuntos.
—¿Acaso buscando pruebas de magia prohibida entre mis estancias? Deberías encontrar mejores recursos.
—Cierto, pues tus estancias no albergan evidencia alguna. Aunque esos almacenes que posees en las tierras del norte... —Antonidas le miró con repugnancia.
¡Maldito! Menudo fisgón pretencioso. —No tenías ningún derecho a...
Antonidas golpeó su bastón contra el suelo para hacerlo callar, y se volvió hacia los otros magos. —Ha convertido los edificios en laboratorios para realizar una serie de sucios experimentos. Vedlo vosotros mismos, compañeros. Contemplad el fruto de su trabajo —abrió el cofre y lo inclinó para que todos pudieran verlo bien.
Restos de rata en estado de descomposición. Dos seguían escarbando torpemente a los lados del cofre en un vano intento de escapar. Varios magos se apartaron, en una ola de consternación. Incluso el elfo noble de pelo dorado, sentado al final de la sala, parecía sobresaltado, pues la edad del Príncipe Kael’thas descartaba la posibilidad de que fuera capaz de realizar una hazaña como esa.
Volviendo la mirada hacia las ratas cautivas, Kel’Thuzad apreció que éstas yacían ahora inmóviles. Más fallos, aparentemente. No importaba. Algún día crearía un espécimen estable e inmortal. Tendría una buena razón que justificara tantas horas de trabajo... Tan solo era cuestión de tiempo.
El hechizo que te silencia tiene varios cabos sueltos. ¿Quieres que te muestre cómo terminar de deshacerlos?
El tiempo y su aliado desconocido, cuya enigmática voz oía en ocasiones, le ayudarían a avanzar un paso más hacia su objetivo. "Muéstrame cómo", pensó.
De repente, apareció un destello, tras el que se descubrió una mujer joven. Cuando se acercó a Antonidas, los ojos del elfo noble la siguieron con mirada a la vez desazonada y amenazadora. Pero Lady Jaina Valiente no le prestó atención: estaba completamente concentrada en su labor. El apuesto príncipe no tenía ninguna posibilidad.
Sus intensos ojos azules dedicaron una mirada curiosa a Kel'Thuzad. Tomó la caja de las manos de Antonidas, que explicó: —Mi aprendiz podrá apreciar que el cofre y su contenido han sido incinerados.
La mujer inclinó la cabeza y se teletransportó, saliendo de la estancia. Al otro lado, el elfo noble miraba el espacio ahora vacío con el ceño fruncido. Bajo otras circunstancias, a Kel’Thuzad esta escenita de teatro mudo le habría parecido divertida. Sin poder defenderse, Antonidas proseguía con su diatriba. Conteniendo su furia en absoluto silencio, Kel’Thuzad, se esforzó una vez más por liberarse.
—Ya hemos permitido que la situación llegue demasiado lejos. Le hemos reprendido a menudo por sus más que cuestionables propensiones. Intentamos guiarlo, y ahora nos enteramos de que ha estado practicando la magia oscura. Los habitantes del Kirin Tor comienzan a pronunciar su nombre como si de una palabra maldita se tratase.
—¡Mientes! —exclamó Kel’Thuzad con todas sus fuerzas, y captó la atención de algunos de los magos, que esperaban oír una explicación—. Los campesinos recuerdan la Segunda Guerra tan bien como yo. Di lo que te plazca sobre los orcos, pero sus brujos ostentaban gran poder, un poder contra el que poco podíamos defendernos. Tenemos una obligación: debemos aprender a manejar y hacer frente a este tipo de magia solos.
—¿Para formar un ejército de ratas muertas, cuya existencia sobrenatural tenga las horas contadas? —replicó Antonidas con brusquedad—. Sí, hijo, también encontré tus diarios. Has guardado un registro muy detallado sobre esta empresa abominable. No puedes pretender utilizar estas criaturas patéticas contra los orcos. Asumiendo, por supuesto, que los orcos emerjan algún día de su letargo, escapen de los campos de reclusión, y de alguna manera, consigan volver a convertirse en una amenaza.
—Por ser un poco más joven que tú no creo que puedas calificarme de niño —replicó Kel’Thuzad—. En cuanto a las ratas, me sirven para hacerme una idea de mis progresos. Se trata de una técnica experimental básica.
Antonidas suspiró. —Me consta que últimamente pasas la mayor parte del tiempo en el norte. Tus ausencias, cada vez más prolongadas, fueron lo que primero llamó mi atención. Seguro que ha llegado a tus oídos que el nuevo impuesto del rey ha levantado el descontento del pueblo. Tu egoísta búsqueda de poder podría incitar la revuelta de los campesinos. Lordaeron podría verse envuelto en una guerra civil.
No sabía nada de ese impuesto, Antonidas debía de estar exagerando. Además, un verdadero mago se centraría en asuntos de mayor envergadura. —Seré más discreto —ofreció, apretando los dientes.
—Ni toda la discreción del mundo podría esconder un secreto de tal calibre —afirmó Drenden.
Modera añadió: —Sabes que siempre hemos actuado con precaución para proteger a los nuestros sin convertirnos nosotros mismos en un peligro. No osamos sacrificar nuestra humanidad, al menos no nuestra apariencia humana y mucho menos nuestra esencia. Tus métodos podrían, en el mejor de los casos, condenarnos como herejes.
Era el colmo. —Se nos ha tachado de herejes durante siglos. La Iglesia no ha apreciado nunca nuestros métodos. No obstante, esos sentimientos aún perduran.
Ella asintió. —Porque evitamos la práctica de magia oscura, que conduce a la corrupción y a la catástrofe.
—¡Porque somos necesarios!
—Basta. —Antonidas parecía cansado, y dirigiéndose a Modera y a Drenden, añadió: —Si las palabras hubiesen bastado para hacerle entrar en razón, ya lo habría hecho.
—He escuchado lo que teníais que decir —respondió Kel’Thuzad exasperado—. Por todos los dioses, ¡os he escuchado hasta hartarme! Vosotros sois quienes no queréis escucharme a mí, ni olvidaros de vuestras ideas anticua...
—No comprendes cuál es nuestro propósito hoy —interrumpió Antonidas—, esto no es un debate. En este momento, se están investigando tus propiedades con perfecta minuciosidad. Todos los objetos manchados con magia negra serán confiscados y, tras ser identificados, con gran satisfacción por nuestra parte, serán destruidos.
Su aliado anónimo le advirtió que esto podría ocurrir, pero Kel’Thuzad no le creyó. Qué raro. Incluso se sintió aliviado por que la situación llegara hasta este punto. Tanto secretismo había limitado el alcance de su trabajo y entorpecido su progreso.
—En vista de la evidencia —dijo Antonidas pesadamente—, el rey Terenas está de acuerdo con nuestro criterio. Si no abandonas esta locura, se te despojará de tu rango y propiedades, y serás exiliado de Dalaran... y de todo Lordaeron.
Con ese pensamiento rondando en su mente, Kel’Thuzad se inclinó y abandonó la estancia. Sin duda, el Kirin Tor mantendría en secreto su supuesta desvergüenza, temiendo las repercusiones que sus actos tendrían de hacerse pública. Por una vez, esa cobardía actuaría en su favor. Su riqueza nunca llenaría los cofres del rey.
