觀古人山水畫，每喜見崇山峻嶺之中，稍得清曠處，一小屋，屋前隙地，微有人影，多半高士一，小童一；高士枯坐，小童俯首茶鐺鑪竈間。眼光繼續尋覓，則屋旁不遠，有溪流，上擱短橋。橋上偶有人，即有亦僅一，或負樵或騎驢，斷不至多。如此構圖，乃表達人之楔嵌深邃山野最宜最美之境也。
| Translation - English
Whenever I view the landscape paintings of the traditional painters, I delight in seeing among the jagged peaks a little opening with a small hut, a slip of land in front, and a trace of people, usually an aged scholar-gentleman and a young boy. The aged scholar sits with a detached look, and the young boy bows his head amid the tea tray and the stove. My eyes continue to search. Not far from the side of the hut is a brook with a short bridge crossing over. On the bridge there happens to be a person, perhaps bearing a load of firewood or riding a donkey—the possibilities are not too many. Structured thus, the painting expresses the feeling that passing one’s days deep within the mountains or fields is the most suitable and the most beautiful existence a person could have. | Japanese to English: Japanese Swatow ware

そのもとになった呉州赤絵は、桃山時代から江戸時代のはじめにかけて中国から輸入された陶磁器で、その華やかないろどりや親しみぶかいデザインが日本人に喜ばれ、茶道具にとりあげられたり、食器として使われたため、その模倣もしきりに行われたのである。もっとも中国製の陶磁器といっても、呉州赤絵は格調高い特別の上等品ではなく、むしろ粗略な、大量生産の陶磁器で、中国の人々にとっては鑑賞に耐えない、とるに足らないものだった。 | Translation - English
The origin of Japanese red-painting Swatow ware was the Swatow ware imported from China from the Momoyama period (1573–1603) to the beginning of the Edo period. The Japanese liked the gorgeous colors and familiar designs and used such ware in the tea ceremony and for tableware, and as a result, it was thoroughly imitated. Though red-painting Swatow ware was originally made in China, it was not fine ware of special distinction. Rather, it was coarse, mass-produced china that the Chinese neither appreciated nor had any preference for.
