After 20 years at the lab bench, I decided to combine my interests in medicine, science, writing and multimedia into a small business. For starters, aroundbigblock Inc. will have to focus on projects that can be managed on the side; I still work full-time as a research scientist.
Addendum July 2008: Thanks to the spectacular funding crisis the States are currently experiencing, I am now on "leave of absence" - basically meaning that other demands on my time now include setting up a temp agency for Chicagoland scientists; I do foresee a dire need for skilled labor to operate equipment in the depopulated labs.
