Efficacy outcomes
Mean morning peak expiratory flow (PEF) measured by the patient before dosing during the last 14 days of treatment was the primary efficacy endpoint. Baseline morning PEF was the mean of all values recorded during the run-in period. Patients recorded their PEF with an electronic peak flow meter. Secondary efficacy endpoints included evening PEF, daily PEF variability, morning and evening FEV1, day and night asthma symptom scores (cough, wheezing, chest tightness, breathlessness and attack) on a four-point scale. The percentage of days and/or nights without clinical symptoms and days with asthma control defined as no or minimal clinical symptoms, no asthma-related unscheduled medical visits, less than three puffs/day SABA, no limitation on activities, daily PEF variability ≤20% and no drug-related adverse events (AEs) was evaluated. Additionally, a post-hoc analysis was performed by assessing asthma control as: no nocturnal awakenings, no asthma symptoms and no rescue medication used.

Wir alle wissen aus Erfahrung, wie unangenehm Schmerzen bei kleinen Alltagsverletzungen sind. Ein Schnitt in den Finger beim Gemüseschneiden, eine kleine Quetschung bei der Gartenarbeit, eine Kopfnuss beim Aussteigen aus dem Auto! Im Bruchteil einer Sekunde ist das Schmerzsignal im Gehirn gelandet. Was aber ist mit den Männern, die über glühende Kohlen laufen oder sich auf ein Nagelbrett legen, als sei es ihr Kuschelbett? Kennen die einen Trick gegen den Schmerz?
Erst-Schmerzen haben Vorfahrt
Fakire wissen besonders genau, wie Schmerzwahr-nehmung funktioniert. Bei Verletzungen und kleinen Wunden werden die Schmerzsignale mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 14 Metern pro Sekunde ins Gehirn weitergeleitet. Sie überlagern alle anderen Reize, mit denen sich das Gehirn gerade beschäftigt: Wärme oder Kälte, Geräusche, optische Eindrücke. Ist dieser Erstschmerz zu heftig, schüttet das Gehirn Schmerzstiller (Endorphine) aus. So kann man trotz des kleinen Unfalls normal weitermachen.
Kein fauler Zauber
Fakire, die barfuss über heiße Kohlen laufen, setzen nicht auf Schmerzmittel. Sie haben eine gut trainierte Fähigkeit ihre Gedanken vom Schmerz wegzulenken: Sie stellen sich vor, die Kohlen seien kühles Moos und laufen so schnell, dass keine Glut an den Fußsohlen kleben bleibt. So tut auch nichts weh. Wer sich mit nackter Haut auf ein Brett mit vielen Nägeln legt, kennt sich in Physik aus. Ein einziger Nagel kann die Haut verletzen und einen ziemlichen Schmerz verursachen. Bei vielen Nägeln verteilt sich der Druck auf den Körper – die Nägel dringen deshalb gar nicht in die Haut ein. Schmerzen: Fehlanzeige.

We all know from experience that even minor everyday injuries can cause an unpleasant pain sensation. Cutting a finger when slicing the vegetables, a tiny bruise whilst working in the garden, bumping our head when leaving the car – within a split second the pain signal has reached the brain. But what about those people who walk on hot coals or lie on a bed of nails, apparently completely at ease? Do they know a trick against pain?
Primary pain: first come, first serve
Fakirs know particularly well how pain perception works. Injuries and minor wounds cause the pain signals to be transmitted to the brain at a speed of 14 metres per second. They override all other stimuli which are at the time being dealt with by the brain, such as warmth or cold, noise and visual effects. If this primary pain is too fierce, the brain releases analgesic hormones (endorphins). This way we can carry on despite our little accident.
No mumbo-jumbo
Fakirs who walk on hot coals don’t rely on painkillers. They have trained their ability to distract their thoughts from the sensation of pain: They imagine that the coals are green moss and walk really fast so that no hot ashes get stuck to their feet. This way they do not feel pain. Someone who lies naked on a bed of nails knows his physics. One single nail can injure the skin and cause considerable pain. With lots of nails, the pressure is spread more evenly over the body – and the nails do not pierce the skin. Pain: nonexistent.

• Sollten sich aufgrund beschlossener Maßnahmen Änderungen des Handelsnamens, der Produktbezeichnung und Produktkategorie oder die Zusammensetzung des kosmetischen Mittels nach Art und Menge der verwendeten Stoffe und, soweit vorhanden, unter Verwendung der INCI-Bezeichnungen, ergeben, so sind diese dem Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit (Bundesamt) im Interesse einer schnellen und wirksamen medizinischen Behandlung bei Gesundheitsstörungen mitzuteilen (Mitteilungs- und Berichtspflichten bezüglich Kosmetika nach § 5d Absatz 2 [9]).
