The first aspect to highlight here is that the thesis of sociology's methodological nationalism was meant then to convey a certain critique of what these authors regarded as well-established trends and practices of that time. To have 'discovered' this methodological nationalism, to have opened a discussion about it, was seen as a crucial critical insight into the strengthening and development of the social sciences. These authors challenged methodological nationalism so that it did not continue to exercise its unnoticed influence. They understand methodological nationalism as an unintended result of certain intellectual trends (Martins) and institutional practices (Smith) and hold the Parsonian mainstream mainly responsible for it. The legacy of the Soviet era is a linguistic deficiency, a missing vocabulary to analyze sociology's own accelerated entry into a capitalist world. The literal translation of 'public sociology' has a negative connotation, stemming from the denigration of the very meaning of public. There is not even a word for 'policy sociology' that separates it from 'political sociology' - a branch of professional sociology - let alone from public sociology. As part of Soviet ideology, public, policy and professional sociologies were all the same, leaving only critical sociology as a possible, separate, dissident alternative. This is an extreme case, but it underlines the importance of context, and the difficulties of translation. | Translation - Russian

These factors point to some elements of this framework that are common to the general migration policy of the Federal Republic of Germany. The first commonality regards the quota, which is a common feature of the migration policies of many countries. The second regards the burden of proof placed on immigrants concerning their legitimate desire to come to the country and contribute to its society, and the need to prove this before leaving their country of origin. It is common for countries to seek only highly qualified migrants, and to make them gain a working contract with a firm before granting them a visa. The last commonality regards the concern with the migrants’ abilities to integrate in the receiving country, especially linguistically – hence the language exams. This last aspect is particularly interesting, because it shows that in reality the German authorities doubt the migrants’ status as Germans, and subsequently doubt their ability to integrate into German society. | Translation - Russian

The next common problem that Kyrgyz NGOs have is a lack of support from the public. Few NGOs have extensive membership. 38.1% of 469 NGOs have up to 10 members. Only more than 16.3% have members over 100 (ACSSC survey 2006:39). As regards volunteering for NGOs, the available data on this indicates that a sense of volunteering is low in Kyrgyzstan. The ASCCS survey has revealed that 62 % of 469 NGOs involve volunteers. However, 65.3% of their volunteers are students and schoolchildren (ACSSC survey 2006:40-41). Unfortunately, there is no data in numbers. The IFES survey has shown that the actual experience of its respondents with NGOs (membership in NGOs, awareness of NGOs in the community and effect of NGOs on respondents’ lives) is very low (see figure 3). It has also revealed that 74% of its respondents said that they would not volunteer for NGOs (Pototskii and Sharma 2001:55). Meanwhile, volunteering is an important factor in the development of civil society in Scotland. 38% of adults (1.2 million people) formally volunteered in Scotland in 2006 (SCVO statistics 2007). | Translation - Russian
Следующей общей проблемой для кыргызстанских НПО является отсутствие поддержки со стороны общества. Лишь немногие неправительственные организации могут похвастаться большим количественным составом. В 38,1% из 469 опрошенных НПО состоит 10 или менее человек, и лишь 16,3% из всех организаций имеют более 100 членов [Опрос АЦПГО 2006:39]. В том, что касается работы в НПО на добровольной основе, имеющиеся данные указывают на то, что уровень волонтерской деятельности в Кыргызстане достаточно низок. For a large part of my translation career I worked with international organizations. These include United Nations agencies (UNDP, UNHCR, UNFPA, UNIFEM, and FAO), the World Bank, and OSCE, among others. Human Rights
Human rights is another major area of my specialization. I have worked with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, ODIHR, and the Freedom House office in Kyrgyzstan, which was my regular client for a number of years. I currently enjoy occasional translation assignments from Human Rights Watch, some of which have been published on their website (see here and here).
Through my work with these clients I acquired a thorough familiarity with a wide variety of topics in human rights, including international law, monitoring of human rights violations, enforcement of human rights, and international human rights instruments.
Social Sciences
I am currently completing a graduate degree in Anatolian Civilizations and Cultural Heritage Management at Koç University (Istanbul, Turkey). My primary concentration is cultural and social history with a focus on Late Antique and Byzantine periods. I have also taken courses in archaeology, history of art, and museum studies.
I hold a BA (Honors) degree in Sociology from the American University of Central Asia. My thesis entitled "Transplanted Churches: The Churching of Women and Adaptation Processes" was based on an ethnographic study at a Protestant church in Kyrgyzstan.
My background in the social sciences enables me to produce well-researched and clear translations of texts in a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, history, sociology, and political science. This is evidenced by my long-term cooperation with clients such as AUCA's Social Research Center.
In addition to this, I have translated a large number of research articles, proposals, and theses for various academic institutions and individual academics. These included translation of a book on social and cultural aspects of music in Central Asia.
