About me

International Organizations

For a large part of my translation career I worked with international organizations. These include United Nations agencies (UNDP, UNHCR, UNFPA, UNIFEM, and FAO), the World Bank, and OSCE, among others. Listed below are some highlights from my work dealing with topics in international cooperation and development:

Conference interpreting

- Press-conference by António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan)
- Human Rights and Terrorism, a regional seminar for Central Asia (Almaty, Kazakhstan)
- European Union Policy towards Central Asia, a conference on regional security (Almaty, Kazakhstan)
- Central Asian Cooperation for Regional Integration, a UNDP/World Bank round table (Almaty, Kazakhstan)
- Gender and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a UNDP/UNIFEM conference (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan)
- UN 60th Anniversary Conference (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan)
- Press-conference by Kamel Morjane, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees following the Andijan events of May 2005 (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan)
- Various high-level meetings between the government of the Kyrgyz Republic and UN officials.

Translation

- English translation of Women and Men in the Kyrgyz Republic (2006), a collection of gender-disaggregated statistics prepared by Kyrgyzstan's National Statistics Committee and UNFPA
- Russian translation of UNHCR Refugees Magazine (Issue 143: After Andijan: Tensions Mount in Central Asia)
- Peace and Development Analysis Resource Pack (methodology and training materials for a UNDP crisis prevention and recovery program)
- A wide variety of development-related reports and documents, including sections of the Human Development Report for Kyrgyzstan.

Human Rights

Human rights is another major area of my specialization. I have worked with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, ODIHR, and the Freedom House office in Kyrgyzstan, which was my regular client for a number of years. I currently enjoy occasional translation assignments from Human Rights Watch, some of which have been published on their website (see here and here).

Through my work with these clients I acquired a thorough familiarity with a wide variety of topics in human rights, including international law, monitoring of human rights violations, enforcement of human rights, and international human rights instruments.

Social Sciences

I am currently completing a graduate degree in Anatolian Civilizations and Cultural Heritage Management at Koç University (Istanbul, Turkey). My primary concentration is cultural and social history with a focus on Late Antique and Byzantine periods. I have also taken courses in archaeology, history of art, and museum studies.

I hold a BA (Honors) degree in Sociology from the American University of Central Asia. My thesis entitled "Transplanted Churches: The Churching of Women and Adaptation Processes" was based on an ethnographic study at a Protestant church in Kyrgyzstan.

My background in the social sciences enables me to produce well-researched and clear translations of texts in a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, history, sociology, and political science. This is evidenced by my long-term cooperation with clients such as AUCA's Social Research Center.

In addition to this, I have translated a large number of research articles, proposals, and theses for various academic institutions and individual academics. These included translation of a book on social and cultural aspects of music in Central Asia.

Examples of my recent work can be found in the Portfolio section of this profile.
