The pelvic floor muscles are located within the pelvis, and function as a physiological “floor”. The muscles encircle the urethra, vagina and rectum, and, together with the sphincter muscles, open and close off the urethra. Normally, the muscles should contract automatically to close the urethra and rectum when we cough, sneeze, lift heavy objects, move quickly, run or jump. The pelvic floor muscles can be compared to a tightly-stretched trampoline; providing effective resistance when abdominal pressure is increased. A non-functioning pelvic floor can result in urinary and faecal incontinence; prolapse of internal organs such as the uterus, vaginal walls, bladder, urethra and rectum, and sexual problems. |
