DEVELOPPEMENT
4. DEVELOPPEMENT GALENIQUE

PHARMACEUTICAL DEVELOPMENTS
4. DEVELOPMENTS OF PHARMACEUTICAL PROCEDURES
The JACQUES LOGEAIS laboratories have modified the procedure for manufacturing KALOGEAIS granules due to industrial feasibility and quality assurance factors. Economic rationales have also informed this policy.
The modifications consisted in replacing the manual process employing 60 copper turbines each with a 80 kg capacity, with an automated process using turbine cylinders with a 2500 kg capacity (DUMOULIN turbine).
This modification of the production machinery, especially the automation factor for industrial scale production, has brought about the following changes :
- modification of the batch size ,
- modification of the manufacturing formula (basically affecting the excipient ingredients),
- modification of the composition of intermediates (powders and coating solutions coating solutions),
- modification of the manufacturing timetable.
Given the complexity of the current manufacturing procedure (in standard turbines) and that of the modified procedure (in DUMOULIN turbines), we have created charts that summarize the main stages of each procedure in the following pages. Indicated are the terms for preparing the intermediates compositions and the timetable for manufacturing operations :
- chart I : manufacturing procedure for standard turbines,
- chart II : manufacturing procedure for DUMOULIN turbines.
A chart giving the overview of all manufacturing operations for each procedure (chart III) has been provided in order to facilitate the study and understanding of the developments outlined ahead.
The main difficulty was to directly adapt the inert or excipient formula and the commensurate procedure for an industrial batch scale (2500 kg) without first adapting to the intermediate production factors and materials. This is why the Development and Production Services were keen to demonstrate their ability to control the intermediates (powders and coating solutions) and the critical manufacturing points (mixes and coating).
The selection of favored methods for the new manufacturing procedure were governed by the nature of the end-product, obtaining a granule with physical and chemical characteristics that were identical to the granule obtained by the old procedure.
Given the objectives at hand, the method for obtaining such a procedure had the following priorities:
- the homogeneity of the power mixes and coating solution,
- knowledge of the physical characteristics of the intermediate substances (granule size of the coating powders, viscosity and coloration of the saccharose / gum arabic solution, viscosity of the coating solution),
- coating homogeneity of powders and coating solution on the sterculia gum granules.
Furthermore, since the active ingredient, sterculia gum, is derived from a natural source, it tends to become contaminated by germs ; this is also true of the coating solution and the intermediate solution mixes. As a result, a study was carried out on the microbial contamination of sterculia gum and the intermediate substances at different stages of the manufacturing process in order to demonstrate the degree of quality control over the microbiological identity of the final product.
The pharmaceutical developments encountered in the present licensing modification report are, in light of the above, centered on the following actions:
- choosing the formula factors,
- explanation of the choices selected for the manufacturing procedure,
- comparison of the dissolving rates of meprobamate in granule form (current procedure / modified procedure),
- determination of the critical stages in the manufacturing procedure,
- optimizing the manufacturing procedure,

| | French to English: Corals | Source text - French LOS CORALES DEL MEDITERRÁNEO
| Translation - English THE CORALS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
Introduction
Corals which live as single units or in colonies; composed of rigid, semi-rigid or soft structures, which protect themselves under rock formations or grow erect like trees; those prefering exposure to the sun or living in zones of darkness; those which generate light or which contain medicinal properties, which are in shallow water or at a depth of more than 5000 meters; with polyps that grow anew each year, or colonies which may be from 50 to 1000 years old, and reefs which have taken 8000 years to grow. Although the number of coral species to be found in the Mediterranean represent less than 5% of those extant throughout the world today, the diversity of the type and forms of life serve as an example to us of the great importance of these animals in relation to the global marine ecosystem.
Corals are simple animals and as such, are capable of forming very complex diverse communities. Contrary to popular belief, simple organisms are those which show a heightened capacity for adaptation and mutation, since complex organisms are more specialized and therefore less likely to undergo genetic and physical modifications over a short period of time.
Many people believe that corals are acutally plants, because in the greater majority of cases they are species that live fixed to their substrate and at a casual glance, don’t seem to be very active. Because we are terrestrial animals, we're used to drawing a distinction between plants and animals according to their respective capacity mobility. Yet what is so obvious for land creatures does not apply in the sea. Appearances to the contrary, many animals spend all or parto f their life anchored to rocks or other substrates, or even to other organisms. This is the case of the porifers (sponges), bryozoans, hydrozoans and a extensive number of worm species, molusks and crustaceans. Sometimes the branch-shaped appearance presented by some only serves to increase the confusion.
But the cells of corals present animal-like organization, with tissue and a nervous system, growing and reproducing, allowing them to form colonies and living directly from the organisms which surround them.
All of them are uniquely marine species and exist in all the known habitats of the oceans, from shallow water and tidal pools to the greatest depths known to harbour marine life.
Corals belong to one of the oldest extant classes of animals in the world. Their fossile remains can be traced back to the pre-Cambrian era , when the great explosion of oceanic life occured, more than 500 million years ago.
Occupying 1.1% of the surface of the world’s oceans and 0.3% of all salt water, it no longer shelters the great coral reefs that existed 60 million years ago, due to climactic and oceanographic changes. However, even today it harbour a spectacular array of corals, including some which are not to be found anywhere else.
• Brief explanation of the taxonomy of anthozoans and the terminology used in this document
The very term “coral” is ambiguous in itself, since it is a common term for some few species with rigid squeletons or else, specific anthozoan groups. Sometimes, it is used to describe species which belong to other classes of marine life, such as hydrozoans and bryozoans. This is the case of the fire or stinging corals (Millepora sp.) or false coral (Myriapora truncata).
We have selected to use that as a title under which to pool together all the species of anthozoans, including true corals, black coral, sea fans or gorgonians, sea feathers, anemones, etc. Other species which are also commonly called corals are not included in our list. This is the case of the fire coral which are included under the hydrozoans, which belong to a class with distinct attributes.
The anthozoans, or “flower animals” as per the translation from Greek, are among the cnidarians. It signifies a group of animals which remain as polyps through their life span.
The Cnidarians, or Coelenterata, derive their name from their cnidocytes or stinging cells – cnidocyte means stinging or itching needle, derived from the Greek word knidé (nettle) – while the other name they are known by, Coelenterata, means vacuous intestine - from the Greek koilos (vacuous) and enteron (intestine).
The Cnidarian phylum is divied into 4 classes of species: hydrozoans, cubozoans, scyphozoans and anthozoans.

Mes respectueuses salutations,
Laura MARTÍNEZ

After working for several years in the public health sector in New York city, I went on to study medicine and work in the pharmaceutical industry in Switzerland.
The second part of my career involved various missions abroad and in international organizations and NGOs, in the sector of international cooperation and development.
After several years of institutional work I developed a specialization in trade and logistics, subjects which I have taught at the Basque Institute of Logistics.
While my home is now in the United States, I still collaborate closely on linguistics projects with my associates and clients in France and Spain.
