Source text - English Keeping in line with the declining interest rate environment in the developed markets, the bank rate in India has also declined in the recent past. For the year ended March 2005, deposit and lending rates of banks remained broadly stable, despite a strong pick-up in credit demand. This reflects appropriate liquidity in the system. Deposit rates eased till December 2004 before edging up in March 2005. Public sector banks (PSBs) realigned their deposit rates in the tenor of one year and above to 5.25-6.50% by June 2005 from a range of 4.75-7.00% in March 2005. Benchmark prime lending rates (BPLR) for public sector and foreign banks experienced some softening even while that of private sector banks hardened. Sub-BPLR lending of the banking system (excluding exports, the bulk of which is at sub-BPLR) constituted over 65% of total outstanding advances above Rs.200,000.
