9.2 RADIATlON UNITS
Το make meaningful calculations in radiation protection problems, it is necessary to have a set of units that allows radiation fields and radiation effects to be expressed quantitatively. Ίwο systems of units are being used in the world today: the so called conventional system, which in various forms and refinements has been used for seνeral decades, and the new Système International (Sl), which is gradually replacing the older system. This book, for the most part, will use conventional units, which are firmly imbedded in nuclear engineering practice and in governmental standards and regulations, at least in the United States.
Radiation units are promulgated by an intemational scientific body, thee InternationaI Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (lCRU). The discussion that follows is based on ICRU report 19 (1971, the conνentional system) and ICRU report 33 (198Ο, SI).
Exposure
The term exposure is used in the conventional system to describe a γ-ray field incident on a body at any point. As discussed in Chapter 3, γ-rays produce ions and electrons when they interact with air. The presence of γ-rays at the surface of a body can therefore be measured in terms of the numbers of ions or electrons produced in the adjacent atmosphere. This measure of radiation field is especially reasonable in the context of radiation protection. As will be shown later, the biological effect of γ-rays is a function of the ionization they produce in a body. Thus, the biological effects arising from a given exposure can be expected to increase more or less uniformly with exposure.
Accordingly, the ICRU has defined exposure, which is given the symbol Χ, by the relation

where Δq is the sum of the electrical charges on all the ions of one sign produced in air when all the electrons (+ and - ), liberated by photons in a volume of air whose mass is Δm, are completely stopped in air. It should be noted that the electrons released from Δm need not, and in most cases do not, stop in the volume containing Δm. These electrons may actually travel a considerable distance from Δm. From Eq. (9.1) it is seen that exposure has dimensions of coul/kg of air.
The Roentgen
The υnit of exposure in the conventional system is the roentgen, abbreviated R, which is defined in the conventional system as

which can be shown to be equivalent to the production of 1 electrostatic unit (l esu = 3.33 x 10-10 coul) of charge of one sign from the interaction of gamma radiation in 0.001293 g of air (1 cm3 of air at 1 atmosphere pressure at O°C). One one-thousandth of a roentgen, a milliroentgen, is denoted as mR.
In SI, the unit is the exposure unit, Χ. It is defined as the production of 1 coulomb of charge in 1 kg of air. One can show that
1 Χ unit= 3,876 R.
Exposure Rate
The rate at which Δq in Eq. (9.1) is liberated as the result of interactions in Δm is called the exposure rate. This is written as Χ = dX/dt and has units of roentgens per unit time - for example, R/sec, mR/hr, etc.
It must be emphasized that the concept of exposure and exposure rate applies οnly to γ-rays (or x-rays) in air at a point outside a body. These terms must not be used in a technical sense to describe neutrons or charged particles or interactions taking place within a body. It must also be remembered that these concepts and roentgen units of measurement are used only in the conventional system. They are not included in SI.

9.2 ΜΟΝΑΔΕΣ ΜΕΤΡΗΣΗΣ ΤΗΣ ΑΚΤΙΝΟΒΟΛΙΑΣ
Για να κάνουμε ουσιαστικούς υπολογισμούς εξετάζοντας τα προβλήματα ακτινοπροστασίας, είναι απαραίτητο να ορίσουμε μια σειρά μονάδων μέτρησης με τη βοήθεια των οποίων θα εκφράζουμε ποσοτικά τα πεδία και τα αποτελέσματα της ακτινοβολίας. Στις μέρες μας, χρησιμοποιούνται δυο συστήματα μονάδων: το συμβατικό σύστημα, το οποίο χρησιμοποιείται εδώ και αρκετές δεκαετίες με διάφορες μορφές και τροποποιήσεις, και το διεθνές σύστημα (Système International - SI), το οποίο σταδιακά αντικαθιστά το παλαιότερο σύστημα. Στο βιβλίο αυτό, ως επί το πλείστον χρησιμοποιούνται οι συμβατικές μονάδες, οι οποίες έχουν καθιερωθεί τόσο στην πρακτική της πυρηνικής μηχανικής όσο και στα κρατικά πρότυπα και τους κρατικούς κανονισμούς, τουλάχιστον στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.
Οι μονάδες μέτρησης της ακτινοβολίες τίθενται σε ισχύ από έναν διεθνή οργανισμό, που ονομάζεται Διεθνής Επιτροπή Μονάδων και Μετρήσεων Ακτινοβολίας (International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements - ICRU). Έκθεση

Πρέπει, επίσης, να θυμόμαστε ότι οι έννοιες αυτές καθώς και η μονάδες μέτρησης roentgen χρησιμοποιούνται μόνο στο συμβατικό σύστημα. Δεν συμπεριλαμβάνονται, λοιπόν, στο SI.
