Bill Clinton took his place in history as the 42nd President of the United States of America when he was voted into power in 1992 and was re-elected to the post four years later.
At 46 when first elected, he was the third-youngest President in US history and, though his stint in office was not without its difficulties, it spoke volumes that he left after over eight years in power with an approval rating of 65 per cent, one which compared favourably to every one of his predecessors over the previous 50 years.
Clinton, who had served five terms as the Governor of Arkansas prior to becoming President, championed a wide range of popular policies including making health care more widely available and improving race relations, while abroad he was a key figure in the Northern Irish peace process and attempts to find a solution to the ongoing Israeli-Palestine conflict.
Even in retirement, the 59-year-old remains among the most popular and well respected figures in world politics, and recently he has been working closely with FIFA on the 'Win in Africa - with Africa' campaign.
Tonight, in fact, Clinton was an interested spectator at Berlin's Olympiastadion as Italy won the 2006 FIFA World Cup on penalties following a 1-1 draw with France. During the half-time break he took time to speak exclusively to FIFAworldcup.com about Germany 2006, football in general and his hopes for South Africa 2010.
Mr Clinton, have you been following the FIFA World Cup?
I've watched a lot of the games, on television of course - this is the first one live. I think it's been an especially wonderful event for Germany. A German friend of mine was telling me yesterday that he and his wife had ordered all these flags, but that the German flag company that serviced them had run out of material. He said such a thing would have been unthinkable ten or 20 years ago. So, in that respect, I think it has been great for Germany and I think they have done a great job with it. I'm not one of those who believes the games have been uninteresting - I think the opposite, in fact. You have to play strategically when you are in an elimination situation; you can't make it as exciting all the time. You have to play with discipline, and sometimes defence is more important than offense.
That said, yesterday Germany won a great game by playing offensively. So, yeah, I'm excited and I have had a wonderful time. And I am looking forward to doing this project in Africa with FIFA (Win in Africa - with Africa') and I am very grateful to have the opportunity to work towards the next World Cup to help the children of Africa.
Tell us about your association with the FIFA World Cup.
When the United States hosted the World Cup in 1994, I had the opportunity to speak with the coach of the Brazilian soccer team (Carlos Alberto Parreira). He said an interesting thing: 'When we all came here, we wondered about this World Cup because we knew soccer was not your game. And yet we've had wonderful attendances. We've had an open door to all of our people coming from other countries to see your games. The American people have made this the best World Cup ever.'
In a way, I think every new World Cup can be the 'best World Cup ever' because the tournament has this potential to bring even more people together, with nations and cultures setting aside their differences in their shared appreciation of soccer.
Looking ahead now, I think you would have to say that the first-ever World Cup in Africa in 2010 provides a unique opportunity to focus the world's attention on the potential of Africa and the challenges faced by the African people. I'm certainly thrilled that my foundation ( The Clinton Foundation ) will be joining in this effort to translate the global appeal of soccer into tangible programs that will benefit the children of Africa. | Translation - Italian
Bill Clinton è stato eletto quarantaduesimo Presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America nel 1992 ed è stato rieletto per il mandato successivo.
Quando è entrato per la prima volta alla Casa Bianca aveva 46 anni ed era il terzo Presidente più giovane della storia degli Stati Uniti. Il periodo in cui è stato in carica ha visto più di un momento difficile e la sua abilità è stata confermata dal fatto che al momento di lasciare l'incarico l'indice di approvazione era del 65%, il più alto dei precedenti cinquant'anni.
Clinton, che era stato cinque volte Governatore dell’Arkansas prima di diventare Presidente, ha promosso numerose iniziative politiche di grande popolarità come la creazione di un sistema sanitario universale, l’applicazione di limitazioni alla vendita di armi da fuoco e azioni per il miglioramento dei rapporti fra razze, mentre all’estero è stato una figura chiave nel processo di pace in Irlanda del Nord e nei tentativi di trovare una soluzione al conflitto israelo-palestinese.

Ho visto un sacco di partite, ovviamente in televisione. Questa è la prima a cui assisto dal vivo. Penso che sia stato un evento davvero meraviglioso per la Germania. Un mio amico tedesco ieri mi raccontava che lui e sua moglie hanno ordinato un buon numero di bandiere ma la ditta tedesca che le produce aveva finito il materiale. Secondo lui una cosa del genere sarebbe stata impensabile dieci o vent’anni fa. Quindi credo che da questo punto di vista i Mondiali siano stati una gran cosa per la Germania e che l’organizzazione sia stata splendida. Non sono fra coloro che si lamentano del livello delle partite, che al contrario ho trovato molto interessanti. Quando si gioca un match a eliminazione diretta bisogna interpretarlo in modo strategico, non si può pensare sempre e solo a dare spettacolo. È fondamentale tenere il campo con disciplina e a volte la difesa è più importante dell’attacco.
Detto ciò la Germania ieri ha vinto una bellissima partita giocando con un atteggiamento offensivo. Quindi sì, sono emozionato e mi sto divertendo molto. Non vedo l’ora di mandare avanti questo progetto con la FIFA in Africa (“Win in Africa - with Africa”) e sono davvero riconoscente a chi mi consente di lavorare in vista dei prossimi Mondiali per aiutare i bambini africani.
Ci parli del suo rapporto con i Mondiali di calcio.
Durante USA ’94 ebbi l’opportunità di parlare con il c.t. della nazionale brasiliana (Carlos Alberto Parreira). Mi disse una cosa interessante: “Quando siamo arrivati qui avevamo dubbi su questi Mondiali perché sapevamo che il calcio non è il vostro sport. Eppure tutte le partite hanno avuto un pubblico meraviglioso. Siete stati davvero accoglienti con tutti coloro che venivano da altri paesi. Il popolo degli Stati Uniti ha reso questo Mondiale il migliore di sempre".
In un certo qual modo ritengo che ogni nuovo Mondiale possa essere “il migliore di sempre” perché si tratta di un evento che accomuna le persone e consente a nazioni e culture diverse di mettere da parte ciò che li divide per concentrarsi sul comune amore per il calcio.
Guardando al futuro penso che si debba affermare che il primo Mondiale africano, che si disputerà nel 2010, costituirà un’occasione unica per concentrare l’attenzione del mondo sul potenziale dell’Africa e sulle sfide che gli africani si trovano di fronte. Andrea Pirlo was a pivotal presence for Italy throughout their Germany 2006 campaign, and he saved one of his best performances for the biggest match of all, earning Budweiser Man of the Match honours for his display in Italy's penalty shoot-out victory over France in the Final.
Pirlo, who was also recognised as the outstanding player in Italy's semi-final win against Germany, combined with fellow AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso to frustrate France's Zinedine Zidane and Frank Ribery, severely limiting their ability to create chances for centre-forward Thierry Henry, who was restricted to just two shots in 106 minutes.
And just as he did against Germany, Pirlo also added the attacking dimension that Italy needed with Francesco Totti smothered by France's own defensive midfield pairing. Pirlo took virtually all of the set-pieces for the Azzurri, including the magnificent outswinging corner that Marco Materazzi headed home in the 19th minute to equalise Zidane's seventh-minute penalty.
