Hydrocarbon fluids are normally not corrosive and don't require corrosion control for internal surfaces. However, based on experience, internal corrosion may occur in storage tanks which have surfaces exposed to water, sediment or other contaminants. Generally, coatings are used to reduce or eliminate corrosion on these surfaces (see Standard PDVSA O-201). For petroleum storage tanks, the use of internal cathodic protection in conjunction with coatings is not a common practice, but in certain conditions can be effective and its implementation is up to the staff responsible for corrosion control. |
