THE TRAIN OF LIFE
A while back, I read a book which compared life with a journey by train.
It made extremely interesting reading, when properly interpreted.

Life is no other than a train journey:
Full of boarding and alighting, spattered with accidents, pleasant surprises in some boardings, and deep sadness in others.

When we're born, we get on the train and find ourselves with people who, we believe, will always … be with us on this journey: our parents.

Sadly, the truth is different.
They'll get off at one station or another leaving us orphaned of their affection, friendship and irreplaceable company.

However this doesn't stop other people who'll be very special to us getting on.

Our brothers and sisters, buddies and those wonderful partners in romance arrive.

Among the people who take this train, there'll also be those who just come along for the ride.

Others who will find only sadness on the journey …
And there'll be others who, going up and down the train, will always be ready to help anyone in need.

Many, when they get off, are sadly missed …
others go so unnoticed that we don't even realize they've vacated their seat.

It's curious to notice that some passengers, who are very dear to us, are seated in a different carriage to us.
Hence we are obliged to travel separated from them.
Of course, that doesn't stop us, during the journey, from making our way along our carriage with some difficulty to get to where they are.

But, sadly, now we won't be able to sit next to them because the seat is occupied by someone else.

No matter; the journey's made like this; full of challenges, dreams, fantasies, hopes and good-byes … but never going back.
So let's make this journey as well as possible.

Let's try to get on well with all the passengers, looking for the best in each one.

Let's always remember that at some point on the journey, they may stumble and we shall probably have to understand them …

Since we too will often stumble, and there'll be someone who understands us.

When it comes down to it, the great mystery is that we shall never know at what station we'll get off, much less where our folks will get off, not even the person sitting next to us.

I wonder if when I get off the train I'll feel nostalgic … I think I will.
It'll be painful to be separated from some of the friends I made on the journey.
Leaving my children to go on alone will be very sad.
But I cling to the hope that, at some point, I shall reach the main station and shall have the excitement of seeing them arrive carrying luggage they didn't have when they got on.

What will make me happy, will be to think that I helped the luggage grow and become of value.

I work on documents of all lengths up to full-length books. I also work on web pages.
My work is to look at the document with a fresh pair of eyes and prepare it for reading by the general public. I work on each sentence intensively and read the entire document at least 3 times.
I remove redundancy and, generally, the document ends up shorter and more concise, with the meaning intact but clearer.
I am also alert for repetition. Where a word is repeated within a few lines I generally look for an alternative, to give the document a feeling of richness and expanded vocabulary.
My first aim is absolute clarity for the benefit and enjoyment of the reader.
