FUEL AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS – PETROL ENGINE MODELS
General information and precautions
The fuel system consists of a fuel tank (which is mounted under the rear of the car, with an electric fuel pump immersed in it), a fuel filter and the fuel feed and return lines. On single-point injection models the fuel is supplied by a throttle body assembly, which incorporates the single fuel injector and the fuel pressure regulator. On multi-point injection models the fuel pump supplies fuel to the fuel rail, which acts as a reservoir for the four fuel injectors which inject fuel into the inlet tracts. In addition, there is an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and various sensors, electrical components and related wiring.
Refer to Section 7 for further information on the operation of each fuel injection system, and to Section 18 for information on the exhaust system.
Warning: Many of the procedures in this Chapter require the removal of fuel lines and connections, which may result in some fuel spillage. Before carrying out any operation on the fuel system, refer to the precautions given in "Safety first!" at the beginning of this manual, and follow them implicitly. Petrol is a highly dangerous and volatile liquid, and the precautions necessary when handling it cannot be overstressed.
Note: Residual pressure will remain in the fuel lines long after the vehicle was last used. Before disconnecting any fuel line, first depressurize the fuel system as described in Section 8.
Air cleaner assembly and intake ducts - removal and refitting
Removal
1. To remove the air cleaner housing, slacken the retaining clip and disconnect the duct from the outlet then unscrew the retaining nuts and remove the housing from the engine compartment. On single-point injection models, it will be necessary to disconnect the vacuum hose and the hot air intake hose from the housing as it is removed.
2. The various ducts can be disconnected and removed once the retaining clips have been slackened. In some cases it will be necessary to disconnect breather hoses and wiring connectors to allow the duct to be removed; the duct may also be bolted to a support bracket (see illustration).
Refitting
3. Refitting is the reverse of removal, making sure all the ducts are securely reconnected.
Intake air temperature control system (single-point injection)
General information
1. The system is controlled by a heat-sensitive vacuum switch, mounted in the throttle body cover. When the temperature of the air passing through the cover is cold (below approximately 35ºC), the vacuum switch is open, allowing inlet manifold depression to act on the air temperature control valve diaphragm in the base of the air cleaner housing. This vacuum causes the diaphragm to rise, drawing a flap valve across the cold-air intake, allowing only warmed air from the exhaust manifold shroud to enter the air cleaner.
2. As the temperature of the exhaust-warmed air entering the throttle body rises, the wax capsule in the vacuum switch deforms and closes the switch, cutting off the vacuum supply to the air temperature control valve assembly. As the vacuum supply is cut, the flap is gradually lowered across the hot-air intake until, when the temperature of the air in the duct is fully warmed-up (approximately 40ºC) the control valve closes, allowing only cold air from the front of the car to enter the air cleaner.
2.2 Removing the intake duct assembly -1.8 and 2.0 litre models
Testing
4. To check the system, allow the engine to cool down completely, then detach the intake duct from the front of the air cleaner housing; the control valve assembly flap valve in the housing duct should be securely seated across the hot-air intake. Start the engine: the flap should immediately rise to close off the cold-air intake, and should then lower steadily as the engine warms up, until it is eventually seated across the hot-air intake again.
5. To check the vacuum switch, disconnect the vacuum pipe from the control valve when the engine is running, and place a finger over the pipe end. When the engine is cold, full inlet manifold vacuum should be felt in the pipe, and when the engine is at normal operating temperature, there should be no vacuum in the pipe.
6. To check the air temperature control valve assembly, detach the intake duct from the air cleaner housing; the flap valve should be securely seated across the hot-air intake. Disconnect the vacuum pipe and, using a suitable length of hose, suck hard at the control valve stub; the flap should rise to shut off the cold-air intake,
7. If either component is faulty, it must be renewed. The vacuum switch is an integral part of the throttle body cover and the temperature control valve is an integral part of the air cleaner housing; neither component is available separately.
8. On completion of the check, ensure all disturbed items are securely reconnected.
Accelerator cable - removal, refitting and adjustment
Removal
3. Working in the engine compartment, release the inner cable retaining clip then slide the clip out of the end fitting and release the cable from the throttle cam (see illustration).
4. Free the accelerator outer cable from its mounting bracket, taking care not to lose the adjusting clip (see illustration). Work back along the length of the cable, free it from any retaining clips or ties, noting its correct routing. On models with automatic transmission it will be necessary to disconnect the wiring from the kickdown switch which is built into the cable.
5. From inside the vehicle, unscrew the fasteners and remove the lower trim panel from underneath the driver's side of the facia to gain access to the accelerator pedal.
6. Reaching up behind the facia, unclip the accelerator inner cable from the top of the accelerator pedal.
7. Return to the engine compartment then free the cable sealing grommet from the bulkhead and remove the cable and grommet from the vehicle.
8. Examine the cable for signs of wear or damage and renew if necessary. Check the rubber grommet for signs of damage or deterioration and renew it if necessary.

IMPACT WRENCH SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
The goal of XYZ Co. is to produce tools that help you work safely and efficiently. The most important safety device for this or any tool is YOU. Your care and good judgment are the best protection against injury. All possible hazards cannot be covered here, but we have tried to highlight some of the important ones.
Air Supply and Connection Hazards
• Air under pressure can cause severe injury.
• Always shut off air supply, drain hose of air pressure and disconnect tool from air supply when not in use, before changing accessories or when making repairs.
• Never direct air at yourself or anyone else.
• Whipping hoses can cause serious injury. Always check for damaged or loose hoses and fittings.
• Do not use quick disconnect couplings at tool. See instructions for correct setup.
• Whenever universal twist couplings are used, lock pins must be installed.
• Do not exceed maximum air pressure of 90 psi/6.2 bar or as stated on tool nameplate.
Projectile Hazards
• Always wear impact-resistant eye and face protection when involved with or near the operation, repair or maintenance of the tool or changing accessories on the tool.
• Be sure all others in the area are wearing impact-resistant eye and face protection.
• Even small projectiles can injure eyes and cause blindness.
• Do not use hand sockets. Use only impact wrench sockets in good condition.
• Sockets in poor condition or hand sockets used with impact wrenches can shatter.
• Always use the simplest hook-up possible. Long, springy extension bars and adapters absorb impact power and could break. Use deep sockets wherever possible.

Barbara Bordnick's photographs strike a beautiful balance of color, lighting and simplicity. Her talent for capturing the inherent grace of each subject, be it a portrait or floral setting, comes through by knowing how to bridle the personality of her subject and in understanding how to light to her advantage.
Understand What You Shoot And Light To Advantage
Whether you shoot portraits, floral, pets or landscape, understand that every subject has a personality. This may seem odd when talking about flowers, for example, but try experimenting with a bouquet from the garden. You'll quickly see that each flower has a certain way about it, and the manner in which the flowers are positioned in the vase and against one another produces a myriad of personalities. Practicing with a floral arrangement is a wonderful exercise in getting to know your subject - individually and collectively - within its environment. It offers a controlled setting where you can experiment with various lighting equipment and techniques to better understand the results.
No matter what I shoot, I make it a point to get to know as much about the subject as possible in advance, and recommend that every photographer do the same. For example, if I am shooting a celebrity I study images of them, I research their likes and dislikes, I observe their body language. In my photograph of Andie MacDowell, I decided that her hair and smile were two very important features. If you are shooting people, search for those characteristics that most define their personality - hone in on one or two traits such as eyes, hair, hands or smile. Her profile with her beautiful hair and smile was pure Andie MacDowell to me.
Lighting is also very important to master, and I recommend practicing with natural light, strobe, and a combination of natural light and manmade, plus various equipment. For Andie's image, I played up her dark and voluminous hair by contrasting it with a clean white background. A soft light from overhead added richness and shimmer. In this black and white image, I keep things very simple so that nothing gets in the way of the communication and connection between my subject and me.
In an image like this, it's important to not overcomplicate. Eliminate busy backgrounds or distracting patterns in the clothing they are wearing. Frame your subject appropriately. I prefer strobe with a simple fill if it makes a pleasing addition, or natural light. If you're shooting close up, pay extra attention to fine shadows, and of course pick their best angle. Experiment with reflectors. Even the slightest addition of bounced light can make a big difference.
My photographs are fairly clean so I often use basic backgrounds such as a white, black or grey. You will find that in this style, your subject becomes that much more central. I love natural light and use it as much as possible, but by circumstance, most often I work with strobes. Strobes are great. They allow me to shoot fast and can be plugged in just about anywhere. I'd recommend making this addition to your gear. I've always disliked the over-lit images so many commercial photos have. Experiment - digital gives you that chance.
I find that some shoots, especially ones staged with a solid backdrop, need background lighting. My recipe is to use very little light so it doesn't interfere with the mood I'm trying to capture. For a pure white, the background should be one-half to two-thirds of an f/stop brighter than the foreground and I check the background lighting with a meter to be sure it's even. I love using fills with both gold and silver stripes. These fan-shaped fills allow me to place added lighting just where I need it.
And finally pay attention to the color of your light; I prefer clean and pure. Always step back and observe what your lighting is doing. I've found that some films produce a slight color shift in shadow areas. Digital has remedied this undesirable effect and Kingston cards consistently render true colors.
Is there a difference in lighting between a black and white and a color image? Yes, you can often be more dramatic and contrasted with black and white, but the essentials are the same - don't over light and observe what your set-up is producing.
When I shoot I have on hand a stack of memory cards. I prefer the 2-GB capacity from Kingston because I generally have to shoot fast. Most people, especially celebrities, don't have a lot of time so I need fast responsive cards. But instances when working with a model, such as the pom pom shot, I have time to stage the setting. That image was done in strobe in a soft box to grab the real colors while creating a soft flattering light.
On Digital Workflow
Digital imaging workflow is different than film. With all the new software and equipment it's become important to stay educated and current; technology is always changing. In fact, I have come across instances where an image file that I took two or three years ago will not reproduce the same as it did when I first took it. The combination of color profiling, inks, papers, software and equipment have all advanced the look and feel of digital imaging.
My studio assistants and I stay abreast of technology and we work with the latest in equipment. A lot of my work is now shot on the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II which produces 13-MB files. While my assistants work on a notebook in the rear of the studio, I am out front shooting. I'll start by taking six or seven test shots in digital, then my assistant takes the card and immediately uploads the files to the notebook. This becomes my test strip. These initial shots help me make sure I'm focusing properly and that the exposure and lighting are correct. The stylist, hair and makeup people can also take a look and make necessary adjustments.
When on location I use my Kingston 2-GB CompactFlash Ultimate cards, but I usually don't shoot more than 1 GB at a time. My high-resolution RAW image files are uploaded to the notebook and immediately burned to a backup CD, even when I am working in the field. In the studio, a CD/DVD burner is hooked up to the notebook and an external hard drive at all times. This way we can instantly make multiple back-ups. We burn RAW files right away and I also leave files on the external hard drive. I don't clear any memory card until long after the shoot, once I'm sure all my backup files are made and confirmed.
Next comes organizing the image files. On occasion, cards and files get uploaded out of sequence, so one of the first things we do is reorder chronologically. The Kingston equipment I use - the media cards and card readers - have always kept this process flowing smoothly.
I feel comfortable enough with my routine and equipment that actual prints don't come into play for me until preparing them for the client; perhaps this is because I do a lot of the computer work myself and can "visually" translate what's on the monitor to a print. I make actual prints at the end of my entire workflow process, meaning I usually won't see prints until long after the shoot is over. For me, this would take too much time.

Eu me relaciono com as pessoas muito mais pelo que elas me fazem sentir do que pelos dotes físicos que as tornam interessantes. Meio complicado isso, para uma fotógrafa, alguém tão ligada ao aspecto visual. Por exemplo, quando conheço uma pessoa, digamos numa festa, é possível que só venha a notar a cor dos olhos dela depois de encontrá-la mais algumas vezes. Porém se eles mexeram com minha emoção, guardo essa impressão para sempre. É exatamente assim que eu quero que as pessoas reajam diante das minhas fotos.
Para mim fotografia implica em sensualidade, em uma relação íntima entre mim e meus temas. Eu me relaciono com as coisas num nível muito emotivo e esse vínculo emocional precisa estar presente quando estou tirando um retrato.
A iluminação, naturalmente, é muito importante, mas eu uso iluminação simples para capturar meus assuntos. Quando muito, uso uma ou duas baterias de luzes, ou difusores de luz e rebatedores. Para mim, o que conta não é a iluminação e sim a ligação que estabeleço com meus temas. Nunca é demais falar da importância de conhecer ao máximo o seu tema antes de fotografá-lo. Quais são seus interesses, seus medos, suas realizações? As coisas que os deixam orgulhosos, embaraçados ou felizes? Conhecer e entender os limites com seu tema, junto com boa comunicação, é o que lhe proporciona aquele momento perfeito - a risada, a expressão de reprovação, de meditação – que traduz a essência e a personalidade daquele indivíduo.
Nesse sentido, também é importante que eu coloque o tema num ambiente que seja seguro para ele – que seja perfeito para aquela pessoa em particular. Para atores, serem eles mesmos e não personagens de um filme, é muito difícil. Você precisa proporcionar-lhes toda e qualquer oportunidade para que isso aconteça. Uma vez que você consiga transmitir-lhes esse nível de descontração, passam a confiar em você para cuidar do resto.
Eu sempre me asseguro de que eles têm o que os atores chamam de “business” - um elemento especial, ou adereço, que os faz sentirem-se mais à vontade. Não importa se é uma peça de vestuário, uma xícara de café ou um isqueiro, isso lhes dá a oportunidade de se concentrar em algo mais.
Todos os grandes retratos compartilham uma ligação com o tema; um nível de honestidade e bem-estar. Porém, é fundamental ter consciência de que a ligação com o seu tema pode desaparecer num piscar de olhos, se você não estiver totalmente preparado. Este é um risco que você assume se não estiver preparado para sua sessão de fotos – qualquer distração, desde uma falha do equipamento até o desconhecimento do seu tema, pode dar um fim ao momento e à foto. Quando esse vínculo emocional se vai, nunca mais volta. Você não consegue trazê-lo de volta.
Diante de um grande retrato você se sente como se estivesse lá – você sabe o que o assunto está pensando — quase dá para ouvir o que se passa naquela foto naquele momento. É dessa ligação que estou falando. A câmera me permitiu ter uma intimidade com meus temas que, sem ela, eu jamais me atreveria a perseguir.
Sobre o Fluxo do Trabalho Digital
Quando alguém mencionou a palavra “fluxo de trabalho” para mim algum tempo atrás, eu não sabia do que estavam falando. O que era o fluxo de trabalho antes de surgir a tecnologia digital?
Sem dúvida a fotografia digital criou um fluxo de trabalho que hoje eu conheço bem. Enquanto tiro as fotos, minha assistente trabalha no notebook no fundo do estúdio. Para começar, tiro seis ou sete fotos, minha assistente leva o cartão e logo as transfere para o notebook. Esta é a minha tira de ensaio. Como não acredito 100% que o cristal líquido da câmera vai me mostrar o que capturei, essas fotos iniciais me ajudam a ter certeza de estou focalizando corretamente e que a exposição está certa. O pessoal dos cabelos e maquiagem também pode dar uma olhada neste ponto; esta é a minha 21st Century Polaroid.
Quando estou fotografando em locação, uso meus cartões CompactFlash Ultimate de 2 GB da Kingston, mas costumo não tirar mais que 1 GB de fotos por vez. Nesta fase as imagens não tratadas são todas transferidas para o notebook e imediatamente gravadas em CD. Temos um gravador de CD/DVD e uma unidade de disco rígido externa permanentemente conectados ao notebook. Desta maneira podemos fazer várias copias de segurança instantaneamente. Gravamos imediatamente os arquivos não tratados e também os deixamos no disco rígido externo. Eu só apago um cartão bem depois da sessão de fotos, quando todos os meus arquivos de segurança já foram feitos e confirmados.
Depois de tirar as fotos, eu as organizo. Os cartões podem ter sido carregados fora da seqüência nesta fase e é importante colocar em ordem todas as fotos. O equipamento Kingston que eu uso – cartões de multimídia e leitoras de cartões – sempre manteve o fluxo constante deste processo.
Fico tão tranqüila com este equipamento, que só uso cópias em papel quando entrego o trabalho ao cliente. Geralmente só vejo cópias em papel bem depois que a sessão de fotos terminou. Isso seria muito demorado.
Talvez pelo fato de eu mesma fazer muita coisa no computador e saber traduzir “visualmente” no papel o que vejo na tela do computador, só vou precisar de cópias reais em papel, quando todo o processo do fluxo de trabalho estiver completo.
O cliente recebe cópias em papel apenas das melhores fotos da sessão que fiz. Como uso produtos Kingston como parte do meu processo de fluxo de trabalho, todo o processo fica mais fácil, mais organizado e, por fim, muito bem-sucedido. |
