In 1910 Du Bois co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP), still the most powerful civil rights group in America, but it was probably his explosive relationship with Booker T Washington, the other towering black figure of the era, that most clearly defined his philosophy.
Washington urged self-improvement for the black man through labour and economic betterment, "the politics of compromise and the mien of ingratiation". He was not above making "darky" quips to please his white audiences.
But Du Bois, the fizzing autocrat with the goatee beard, and the taste for German wines and foreign cigarettes, was made of more inflexible stuff, demanding that the "talented tenth" of the black population deserved precisely the same sort of education as talented whites.
Appalled by lynchings and shattered by the death of his two-year-old son from diphtheria, Du Bois turned from academic life towards racially radical journalism. He called on the Negro (his chosen word) to "demand his social rights: his rights to be treated as a gentleman when he acts like one, to marry any sane, grown person who wants to marry him."
If that view sounds commonplace now, it was radical then, and often attacked. Increasingly disillusioned, as he grew older his calls for change became more anxious and fervent. He turned to communism. His later portraits resemble nothing so much as a black Lenin. He died aged 95, the day before Martin Luther King marched on Washington to deliver his "I Have a Dream" speech.

Toen Du Bois ouder werd (en steeds meer gedesillusioneerd) werden zijn oproepen voor verandering steeds bezorgder en vuriger. Hij wendde zich tot het communisme. Zijn latere portretten lijken op niets minder dan een zwarte Lenin. Du Bois overleed op 95-jarige leeftijd, een dag voor Martin Luther King de mars naar Washington liep waar hij zijn ‘I have a dream’ toespraak hield.

Møller noted which flowers were the first to be visited by each bee entering a patch. He then measured their petals, and the petals of their nearest neighbours. He also noted which flowers the bees visited second, to see if any preferences for symmetry were consistent. In 88 out of 155 cases, they were: the bees visited two consecutive flowers that were each more symmetrical than their nearest neighbour.
That suggested that bumblebees are sensitive to petal symmetry, but it was not absolute proof: the bees could have been tuning in instead to some other characteristic that simply happened to be present in symmetrical flowers. So Møller reached for his scissors and snipped off the ends of some petals. Flowers deprived of their symmetry in this way failed to attract bees.
Why bees and other animals should be so enamoured of symmetry is still unclear. Mailer and other researchers claim that symmetry is a badge of biological fitness. Only those with the best genes and food supplies, they say, are likely to shrug off the parasites and other environmental hazards that can disturb healthy, symmetrical development.

My background
I started my professional career as PhD student biology in behavioural and neural science, so I have a widespread knowledge of the biological, medical, psychological and pharmaceutical field.
Furthermore, I have studied at the Writers School in Amsterdam, The Netherlands where I improved my writing skills, but also my experience in the literature, publishing field.
Right now I am totally devoted to languages, both as a translator/proofreader and as a teacher. The last five years I have lived in Chester, Nottingham and Manchester in the UK, which provided me with a more in-depth understanding of the English language and British culture.

Mijn achtergrond
Ik ben mijn professionele carrière begonnen als wetenschapper in gedrags- en neurobiologie en heb daardoor een uitgebreide kennis op het gebied van biologie, geneeskunde, psychologie en farmacie.
Verder heb ik aan de Schrijversvakschool Amsterdam gestudeerd waar ik mijn schrijfvaardigheden heb verbeterd, maar ook ervaring opdeed op het gebied van literatuur en het uitgeversvak.
Tegenwoordig richt ik mij volledig op het vertalen/corrigeren en lesgeven in het Nederlands en Engels. De afgelopen vijf jaar woonde ik in Chester, Nottingham en Manchester in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en daar heb ik een diepgaand begrip van de Engelse taal en cultuur gekregen.
