About me

Full-time freelancer since January 2007

From May 2000 until December 2006 I worked in the advertising department of a daily newspaper in South Africa. Working at the paper had exposed me to various types of text from a variety of subject fields. The pressure is always on at a newspaper, and I have learnt to work fast and accurately.

During my time at the paper, I had also accepted freelance work on a part-time basis. Now that I'm a full-time freelance translator, I can accept more work at shorter notice with shorter deadlines.

Experience

At the newspaper, I regularly encountered legal notices, auction notices, broadsheet sale advertisements, motor vehicle strips and display ads, classifieds and smalls, television guides, financial statements and announcements, and travel and tourism brochures.

For freelance clients, I have done work relating to horticulture, HIV/Aids, access to information, medical and pharmaceutical testing, health and safety, and mining, to name but a few. I have also extensive experience in software localisation.

Qualifications

I completed the National Diploma: Language Practice (cum laude) in 1995 at the Cape Technikon in South Africa. It is a three year course of general language, linguistics and translation theory and practice.

Depending on your country's legal requirements, I may be able to perform certified translations. I translate and edit legal notices every day at the newspaper, but I am not a sworn translator for South African purposes.

I am currently member of the South African Translators' Institute and the American Translators' Association.

I actively take active part in language and translation discussions on-line. One of my interests is Afrikaans terminology, and I have been co-editor of several on-line terminology lists.

Rates

My usual rate is EUR 0.09 or USD 0.12 per source word for translation. The minimum charge is EUR / USD 25.00. Payment is accepted in most currencies. I prefer payment by PayPal or Moneybookers.
