French to English: General information about cholera (extract) General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical (general)
Translation - English For the moment cholera continues to thrive as an endemo-epidemic in lakeside regions and in certain towns situated near lakes, and is often linked to populations being displaced because of political instability – for example, the arrival of a million Rwandan refugees in Goma (Democratic Republic of Congo). This resulted in the most explosive outbreak of cholera ever seen in such a short period of time. Between 14th July and 15th August there were at least 36,000 confirmed cases of cholera resulting in 25,000 deaths.
In Katanga province epidemics have been occurring regularly since 1981.

Translation - English The share options granted in 2002 to directors of companies in the CAC 40 index have very little potential for profit, notes the website stock-option.fr. Indeed on many occasions the share price has fallen since the options were granted. Nevertheless those share options are not worthless, as the share price can recover over the life of the option (usually 10 years).
During the most recent round of company annual general meetings, therefore, the fall in the Stock Exchange was not enough to prevent an outburst of criticisms and bitter-sweet comments from shareholders regarding the policy of granting share options to senior executives. "What is shocking is that certain directors are taking advantage of the fall in the stock market by putting in place new option plans based on the lower prices," protests Fabrice Rémon, the president of Deminor, a company providing assistance to small investors.
Translation - English The rapid expansion of the Spanish economy in recent years has not concealed some significant weaknesses which have been threatening continued growth. Prominent among these has been the slow increase in industrial productivity, a topic which economists, myself included, have been placing at the forefront of our concerns for more than a decade – when, naively, we believed that we had found the key to reducing the upward trend in unemployment.
For many Spanish economists, the slow growth in industrial productivity merely reflects the underlying competitive weakness which is casting a shadow over any increase in production, and is an indication of other important weaknesses such as an excessive emphasis on residential construction. This suggestion is well-founded given the long-term relationship between economic growth and increased industrial productivity. Nonetheless this relationship is not always present in the short term, particularly when an economy is subjected to an “immigration shock” of the magnitude experienced by Spain.
