An execution cannot be used to condemn killing. Such an act by the state is the mirror image of the criminal's willingness to use physical violence against a victim. Additionally, all criminal justice systems are vulnerable to discrimination and error. No system is or could conceivably be capable of deciding fairly, consistently and infallibly who should live and who should die. Expediency, discretionary decisions and prevailing public opinion may influence the proceedings from the initial arrest to the last-minute decision on clemency.
In addition experience demonstrates that whenever the death penalty is used some people will be killed while others who have committed similar or even worse crimes may be spared. The prisoners executed are not necessarily only those who committed the worst crimes, but also those who were too poor to hire skilled lawyers to defend them or those who faced harsher prosecutors or judges.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone tells the story of Harry, who, left orphaned as a baby, is sent to live with an aunt and uncle who are mean to him. But there’s something mysterious about Harry, too. “Harry [is] a boy who doesn’t know he’s a wizard, who has always been able to make strange stuff happen, but unconsciously—normally when he’s scared or angry,” she explained. “Unbeknownst to him, his name has been down at this amazing school for witchcraft and wizardry since birth. But he doesn’t know this, because the relatives with whom he lives have hoped that if they’re horrible enough to him, they’ll be able to squash the magic out of him."
On his 11th birthday, however, Harry is visited by a friendly giant who tells him about his magical powers. The giant then takes him to Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft. Once he arrives at the school, Harry discovers that his real parents were legendary wizards. Joined by two school chums, he then has a series of great adventures involving baby dragon smuggling, battles against giant trolls, games of Quidditch (a game in which participants fly around on broomsticks and the game balls are alive), and a desperate search for a magical item known as the Sorcerer’s Stone.

For the first time ever at ITMA, there will be a separate sector within the show for Nonwovens, incorporating all types of machinery for web formation, bonding and finishing of nonwovens and felting, together with their accessories.
The response from the textile industry to this brand new sector has been extremely positive, and to date the ITMA 2003 Organising Committee has signed up more than 60 exhibitors who will be showing their latest Nonwoven technology.
The Nonwovens sector has been located in a very central position within the impressive NEC site, with direct links leading off from the Nonwovens hall into the various Spinning, Dyeing and Finishing, and Knitting Halls.
The owner of the show is also particularly pleased to be able to counter the earlier rumours in the marketplace regarding the break-away of the Knitting Industry from ITMA to a rival show in Milan. Indeed, it confirms that the Knitting Industry will once again take up a leading role in ITMA 2003. Centrally located between Spinning, Nonwovens and Weaving, there are currently over 65 exhibitors taking stands in the Knitting Sector.

La problématique « sida » génère encore beaucoup de préjugés fondés sur l'indifférence, la révolte, la douleur ou l'incompréhension. Le sida est non seulement une maladie de nature biomédicale, c'est aussi une maladie « sociale » faisant appel à tout un ensemble de représentations individuelles et culturelles. Il nous a donc semblé qu'au-delà d'une aide réelle en direction de la recherche scientifique et des malades, il fallait aussi ouvrir une nouvelle porte au public qui puisse lui donner accès à la problématique, l'informer, l'éduquer et lui permettre de comprendre. Il nous fallait trouver une passerelle entre la réalité dure et douloureuse de la maladie et le devoir de mémoire et d'espoir.
Le lieu que nous souhaitons créer sera notre passerelle. L'art a cette vocation de pouvoir toucher, sensibiliser et créer de nouvelles formes de solidarité. Il ne peut laisser indifférent. Aussi, le lieu ne sera pas simplement une œuvre d'art inaugurée puis laissée dans un jardin, nous voulons en faire un réel lieu évolutif, d'information, de communication, un lieu fédérateur source d'interrogations, de réflexion et de prise de conscience de la part du public.

Hemos pensado entonces que, más allá de una ayuda real a la investigación científica y a los enfermos, también hacía falta abrir una nueva vía para el público en general, para que la gente pueda acceder a la problemática, recibir información y educación y para que pueda entender. Necesitábamos encontrar una pasarela entre la dura y dolorosa realidad de la enfermedad y nuestra obligación de promover la memoria y la esperanza.
El lugar que queremos crear será nuestra pasarela. El arte tiene esta vocación de llegar al corazón de las personas, de sensibilizarlas y de crear nuevas formas de solidaridad. No puede dejar a nadie indiferente.
