Textur- und Formerkennung konkurrenzieren einander nicht, sie ergänzen sich. Die Texturerkennung erfasst im Schnellverfahren ganze Flächen ohne ausgeprägtes Differenzierungsvermögen, die Formerkennung wird mittels Top-down-Input – welcher im Folgenden näher erläutert wird – durch Aufmerksamkeit gesteuert und kann nur sequenziell eine Figur nach der andern analysieren. Analysen dieser Art benötigen Zeit und sind auch nachhaltiger. Der Zeitbedarf für das Erkennen von Figuren ist größer als zwei Zehntelsekunden. Ihre Resultate lassen sich in der Regel aus dem Kurzzeitgedächtnis abrufen und weiter verarbeiten. Texturen hingegen dienen eher der Orientierung und lösen allenfalls instinktive Handlungen aus. Wenn ein Muster ein fremdes Element enthält, kann dieses erst nach langer intensiver Betrachtung mit dem «P-Auge» als versteckte Figur erkannt und lokalisiert werden. Wird das Muster nur kurz gezeigt, so kann der Fehler in gewissen Fällen erahnt, der genaue Ort und die Geometrie können hingegen nicht erfasst werden. Wenn nur ein Element des Musters fehlt, so gilt dies im «M-Auge» nicht als Fehler, weil wir ein Interpolationsverfahren besitzen, welches solche Mängel auskorrigiert. Dieses Korrekturverfahren ist ohne Unterbruch im Einsatz.

Die Graphik 1.4 enthält eine Zusammenstellung der wichtigsten neuronalen Werkzeuge zur Bilderkennung. In der ersten Zeile dieser Abbildung sind Werkzeuge angedeutet, welche dunkle Linien vor hellem Grund oder umgekehrt helle Linien vor dunklem Grund aufspüren. Andere Werkzeuge reagieren auf Kanten von hellen oder dunklen Flächen, wieder andere auf helle oder dunkle Ecken. Es gibt spezialisierte Zellen, welche bei Ecken und bei Strecken einer gewissen Länge feuern. Viele dieser Nervenzellen sind auch richtungssensitiv. Wenn wir einen gestreckten Winkel in 6-Grad-Schritte unterteilen, erhalten wir 30 verschiedene Richtungen. Wir benötigen dann 30 richtungssensitive Neuronen für jede der oben erwähnten Eigenschaften. Durch Interpolation lassen sich selbstverständlich auch alle Zwischenrichtungen erkennen.

A comparison of texture and form recognition
Texture and form recognition do not compete with each other. On the contrary they complement each other. Texture recognition captures on a fast track basis whole surfaces without a pronounced capability of differentiation, and form recognition is guided with top-down input – which will be explained in what follows –, or conscious attention, and can only analyze one figure after another in sequence. These kinds of analysis take time and are also more sustainable. The time requirement for the recognition of figures is more than two tenths of a second. Their results can as a rule be called up and further processed by the short term memory. In contrast, textures serve more for orientation and if needed, trigger instinctive actions. If a pattern contains a foreign element, this can only be recognized and located as a hidden figure after a longer, intensive observation with the «P-eye». If the pattern is only shown briefly, then the mistake can be surmised in certain cases, but the exact location and the geometry can not be pinpointed. If only one element of the pattern is missing, this is not considered a mistake in the «M-eye» because we are in possession of an interpolation procedure, which corrects for such deficits. This correction procedure is constantly deployed.
Elements on the edge of the contour
The diagram 1.4 contains a compilation of the most important neuronal tools for image recognition. In the first line of this image tools are indicated, which detect dark lines in front of a bright ground or conversely bright lines in front of a dark ground. Other tools react to edges of bright or dark surfaces, and others to bright or dark corners. There are specialized cells that fire longer in reaction to corners and lines of a certain length. Many of these nerve cells are also direction sensitive. If we divide a straight angle in steps of 6 degrees, we obtain 30 different directions. We then need 30 direction sensitive neurons for each of the above mentioned characteristics. Of course all intermediate directions can be recognized by interpolation.
