The old year is rung out, the new year dawns. A gift given simply to show gratitude is received with joy, and with the giving and receiving a friendship deepens.
A conscientious soul will journey far and wide to give a gift. In China, there's an ancient oft-told tale in which "a light and humble goose feather is sent as a gift from a thousand li away", while in the West, Santa also gives his all, transported by reindeer from the arctic cold, climbing chimneys, up and down, for the simple sake of bringing modest gifts. Some say the old red-suited man in the red hat is pure invention, but over a century ago, The New York Sun featured an editorial that proved, by serious analysis, that "Santa Claus most definitely and surely does exist". These days, at Christmas, this article is widely quoted still, and thus the image of Santa Claus strikes deeper chords in people's hearts. |
