Era quasi mezzogiorno e la calura estiva cominciava a farsi sentire spietatamente anche quell'anno. La donna camminava curva a testa bassa, radendo i muri delle vecchie costruzioni che delimitavano lo stretto vicolo del paesino di Sugano. I suoi passi incerti erano cadenzati dal rumore delle lacere ciabatte di plastica che indossava ai piedi i quali, nonostante l'aspetto generale degli abiti trasparisse una notevole povertà, erano meticolosamente curati come pure le unghie delle sue mani ossute.

Le origini
Oderzo è posta al centro di un’ampia fascia territoriale compresa tra i corsi del Piave e del Livenza.
Grazie alla sua posizione geografica, Oderzo assunse ben presto un ruolo di collegamento e di scambio quale nodo di traffici e commerci, come del resto lo conferma il nome stesso della città, Opitergium, da terg che significa piazza, mercato.
Le più antiche tracce di insediamento umano in Oderzo risalgono alla primissima età del ferro, come testimoniato dal ritrovamento nel 1984 di un nucleo di materiali ceramici risalenti al X-IX sec. A.C.
Nella seconda età del ferro l’abitato andò assumendo una dimensione non ancora prettamente urbana, come evidenziato da strutture che denotano l’esistenza di impianti artigianali e dal rinvenimento di tre cippetti che indicano i confini dello spazio urbano.
Attorno allo spazio urbano, in località Colfrancui nel 1982 e in via Garibaldi nel 1990, sono stati individuati due brevi tratti di necropoli.
Dalla massa dei votivi antropomorfi si distacca la riproduzione di un cavallo, offerta simbolica e/o sostitutiva di un cavallo reale. L'offerta del cavallo, tipica dell'ambiente veneto, è ben documentata dai numerosi rinvenimenti di sepolture equine nelle necropoli di Este, Adria, Padova e Altino. Este.

Oderzo is located at the center of a wide strip of land between the Piave and Livenza Rivers.

La figura del Santo ha dominato per secoli la storia della città, che gli ha sempre dedicato importanti riconoscimenti religiosi e civili. Basti pensare che proprio in onore a San Giovanni Battista fu eretto il meraviglioso Battistero che sorge davanti al Duomo. In tempi antichi, il 24 giugno, i nobili e i signori venivano avvisati per l'obbligo dell'offerta, consistente in ceri e pali, mentre una parte delle candele donate a San Giovanni doveva poi stare accesa per tutto l'anno nel Battistero. Con l'aumentare della potenza di Firenze, i ceri sempre più grandi e riccamente adornati. Ancora oggi, la mattina del 24 giugno un breve corteo da Palazzo Vecchio, sede del potere civile, si reca ad offrire i ceri al santo protettore, ma la vera attrazione per fiorentini e turisti si tiene la sera sul Piazzale Michelangelo. Da lì vengono infatti sparati i "fochi" di San Giovanni, lo spettacolo pirotecnico che richiama una grande folla, concentrata soprattutto sui Lungarni. Lo spettacolo dura una mezz’ora e termina con un forte "botto" finale. L’inizio come sempre è alle 22,00, ma è molto prima che lungo l’Arno si assiste ad un via vai di persone alla ricerca del posto migliore da cui ammirare lo spettacolo.
