To say that knowledge is closed under entailment is to say that the following principle (perhaps with qualifications) is correct:
K: If, while knowing p, subject S believes q because S knows that p entails q, then S knows q.
This principle that knowledge is closed under entailment, K, has been challenged on the basis of cases like the following.
Table Case: Ted is in an ordinary house in good viewing conditions and believes red, his table is red, entirely because he sees his table and its color; he also believes not-white, it is false that his table is white and illuminated by a red light, because not-white is entailed by red (Stewart Cohen 2002).
Car Case: Sam has parked his car in typical (un-Gettierized) circumstances and believes car, his car is parked outside, because he just left it there; he believes not-(not-car & dreaming), he is not merely dreaming his car is parked outside, because it follows from car (Gilbert Harman and Brett Sherman (2004).

C. Beyond the given to competence
Consider a belief whose content is a certain proposition, (p). What relation must an experience bear to that belief in order to give it epistemic support? Foundationalists of the given offer a twofold answer.
Take first a state E with that same propositional content (p). B(p) is said to derive justification from being based rationally on E(p), as when B(p) is the belief that one sees that p, and E(p) is a visual experience as if one sees that p. That is how perceptual justification is supposed to work.
Introspective justification works differently. E might itself amount to the fact that p, as an ache suffered by S might amount to the fact that S aches (in a certain way). Alternatively, it might constitute a truth-maker for that fact.
Our twofold answer faces the speckled hen problem on both its perceptual and its introspective side. Someone might believe that his conscious experience is of a certain sort, or that his surroundings have a certain perceptible feature, while his visual experience is of that sort, and does have the content attributed to the surroundings, and yet his belief might fall short nonetheless. Why so? Because the subject’s ability to subitize is limited to complexity of degree four or so. If one takes the dots to number eight—whether on the seen surface, or in one’s subjective visual field—one may be right only by luck. Neither the perceptual nor the introspective belief is then so much as competently formed: it oversteps one’s subitizing limits. | Translation - German
C. Jenseits des Gegebenen, hin zur Kompetenz
Betrachten wir eine Überzeugung, deren Gehalt eine bestimmte Proposition (p) ist. In welcher Beziehung muss eine Erfahrung zu dieser Überzeugung (B) stehen, damit sie diese auf epistemische Weise stützen kann? Erkenntnistheoretische Fundamentalisten des Gegebenen bieten eine zweiseitige Antwort an.
Zuerst nehme man einen Zustand E mit dem gleichen propositionalen Gehalt (p). Die Überzeugung B(p) soll ihre Rechtfertigung dadurch erlangen, dass sie rational auf E(p) gegründet ist, und zwar so als wenn es sich bei B(p) um die Überzeugung handelt, dass man dass p sieht und es sich bei E(p) um eine visuelle Erfahrung handelt, als wenn man dass p sieht. In dieser Weise soll Rechtfertigung durch Wahrnehmung funktionieren.
Introspektive Rechtfertigung funktioniert anders. E könnte selbst auf die Tatsache hinauslaufen, dass p, so wie ein Schmerz, unter dem S leidet, auf die Tatsache hinauslaufen könnte, dass S Schmerzen (auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise) hat. Oder aber es könnte einen Wahrmacher für diese Tatsache darstellen.
Unsere zweiseitige Antwort steht dem Problem des gesprenkelten Huhns gegenüber und zwar sowohl auf der Seite der Wahrnehmung als auch auf der Seite der Introspektion. Jemand mag glauben, dass seine bewusste Erfahrung von einer bestimmten Art ist oder dass seiner Umgebung ein bestimmtes wahrnehmbares Merkmal zukommt, derweil seine visuelle Erfahrung von dieser Art ist und den Inhalt hat, der der Umgebung zugeschrieben wird; dennoch könnte seine Überzeugung zu kurz greifen. Warum? Weil die Fähigkeit der Simultanerfassung eines Subjektes ungefähr den Umfang von vier Punkten umfasst. Erhöht man die Anzahl der Punkte auf acht – egal, ob auf der sichtbaren Oberfläche oder im eigenen Gesichtsfeld – kann man höchstens per Zufall richtig liegen. Wahrnehmungen und Erfahrungen, Beobachtungen und Experimente, Überzeugungen, Repräsentationen und Wissen sind eingebettet in Netzwerke von Wissenskulturen. Von Wissenskulturen ist im Plural zu sprechen, weil sich in der Moderne, nicht nur im verwissenschaftlichten Europa, durch Arbeitsteilung, Spezialisierung, Autonomisierung von Funktionssystemen und soziale und kulturelle Binnendifferenzierung von Gesellschaften epistemische Kulturen mit Eigensinn, mit ihren je eigenen Weltsichten, Zeichensystemen, Semantiken und Wahrheitsansprüchen herausgebildet haben. In der Perspektive ‚Wissenskulturen’ wird ein rationalistisch verengter Wissensbegriff erweitert: Berücksichtigt wird ein mehrstelliges Relationengefüge unter Einschluss vorrationaler Tiefenschichten, aus denen heraus sich – vermittelt durch Emotionen, Einstellungen und Überzeugungen – Wissen bildet. Damit öffnet man den Wissensbegriff für die Einsicht, dass in Kulturen unterschiedliche Einstellungen und Überzeugungen zu konfligierenden Wahrheitsansprüchen führen können. 3. Cultures of Knowledge
Perceptions and experiences, observations and experiments, beliefs, representations and knowledge are embedded in networks of cultures of knowledge. Cultures of knowledge are to be spoken of in the plural because in the modern age, and not only regarding the broad scientific usage in Europe, epistemic cultures with their own self-will and their own world views, sign systems, semantics and truth claims have developed due to the division of labor, specialization, autonomization of function systems and the social and cultural differentiation within societies. In the perspective of ‘cultures of knowledge’ a rationalistic, narrowed concept of knowledge is broadened: a polyadic structure of relations including pre-rational deep layers is taken into consideration out of which knowledge is formed – mediated by emotions, attitudes and beliefs.
This opens the concept of knowledge to the understanding that different attitudes and beliefs can lead to conflicting truth claims within cultures. Varying epistemic traditions, styles of argumentation and representation as well as self images and public images are the foundations for epistemic identities.
A result of this broadening of the concept is the concession – or the
alarm this causes – that the holding-for-true and the holding of a belief are not generally empirically justified and that knowledge is empirically underdetermined. |
