I am a professionally trained English <> Spanish translator and interpreter supported by eighteen years as a practicing lawyer and notary.
As part of my law practice I have translated legal documents for my clients, mostly in the Spanish into English combination. Due to my long-time interest in translation and languages I decided to pursue translation studies and in 2012 completed a Professional Certificate in English to Spanish Translation from New York University (NYU).
My academic preparation also includes a B.A. in International Studies and Spanish from a US university accredited by the Middle States Association and a Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited school in the USA.
Besides the Translation Certificate, I also approved the Spanish-English Written (Phase One) of the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Exam (FCICE).
My specializations are in legal, medical, business and financial translations. I am bilingual in English and Spanish and translate in both directions.
I am knowledgeable of legal terminology in English and Spanish since I studied law in the United States and practice law in Puerto Rico where local court proceedings are carried out in Spanish. However, because many federal laws apply here in Puerto Rico and legal proceedings in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico are carried out in English I have continued to use and practice legal terminology in English.
In addition to translating, I also edit and localize Spanish translations, and review and analyze documents in Spanish or English in order to prepare summaries in the opposite language. In the interpretation field I offer consecutive and phone interpretation services.
My experience in legal translation includes translation of contracts, deeds, pleadings, powers-of-attorney, depositions, letters, legal memoranda, articles of incorporation and court opinions from Spanish into English and English into Spanish.
Also, in the field of medical translation I have edited and updated Spanish translations of clinical trial documents and medical questionnaires for patients, consent forms, consumer notifications about their rights, policy manuals and circular flyers.
Last year I started rendering consecutive telephone interpretation services for the Hispanic community in the USA interpreting medical, legal, insurance and business calls. Furthermore, I have experience in consecutive court interpretation.
Throughout my career I have consistently met deadlines and managed projects and schedules efficiently as a solo practitioner attorney-at-law for eighteen years and as a freelance translator for four years.
