| Translation - English 11.1 What are commodity futures and how do they differ from commodity cash transactions?
Commodity futures contracts differ from a traditional commodity cash (or spot) trans¬action in that they do not provide for delivery upon execution of the transaction; instead, delivery is deferred to some future date. Consequently, it is not uncommon to enter into a futures contract when the underlying commodity is not even available at the time and/or has not yet been produced. This type of futures contract, also referred to as the „motherlode“ of the futures exchange, may be considered the archetypal trading vehicle and over time became instrumental in the establishment of futures exchanges as we know them today. The primary motive for entering into a transaction of the type used to be a spreading of risk and/or the purchase of goods from faraway lands. In rudimentary form, these exchanges go back all the way to antiquity. Today, the most important futures exchanges can be found in the USA. Among them, we should mention the CME in Chicago and the Nymex in New York, the latter of which grew out of a merger of smaller dairy exchanges. At the present time, a large portion of all commodity futures contracts are traded at the Nymex as the world’s largest futures exchange. It is characteristically viewed as the last bastion of pure capitalism. Most transactions nowadays are executed with a strictly speculative mindset and the great majority of positions are closed out prior to expiration. Conversely, cash transactions presume delivery and acceptance in practically 100 percent of all trades.
