About me

Full-time freelance translator since 1998, with impeccable language skills and credentials (Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish, magna cum laude), backed by solid hands-on experience in a diversity of areas in large and mid-sized companies in both the United States and Spain. I am a native American English speaker, and can work with the Spanish of both Latin America and Spain. The fact that I have spent many years in a Spanish-speaking environment has given me the ability to understand and interpret even the most subtle nuances of the source materials I deal with, as well as familiarity with the cultural framework and references contained in these texts.

I am on UNESCO's roster of external, freelance Spanish > English translators, having passed their qualifying tests.

Areas of expertise

Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations: Whether you're looking for copywriting from scratch or a polished translation of already existing collateral material, I can do the job. I have worked in both areas in a corporate environment, specifically while in the employment of an American consumer-product manufacturer, and also have extensive freelance experience. I have written and translated newsletters, press releases, corporate brochures, ads for trade magazines, etc. Another of my areas of specialization is the translation of market research reports, marketing studies and consumer surveys.

Human Resources: Broad HR experience, with seven years of HR work in Spain, primarily in the areas of training and development, management by objectives and recruitment, at ENASA/Pegaso, a heavy-vehicle manufacturer (trucks, buses, military vehicles), along with nine years in the U.S. (hiring/recruitment, personnel, benefits, etc.). Numerous specialized seminars on topics such as the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), employment-at-will, wrongful discharge, employee handbooks, etc. I have extensive translation experience in this area, including the following specific subjects: job descriptions, training plans, prevention of occupational hazards, knowledge management, psychological tests used in pre-employment selection, disabilities, etc.

Travel/Tourism/Culture/Art: Direct experience as a corporate travel planner (nine years). Ongoing work for nearly three years (2004-2007) translating content (hundreds of thousands of words) of several tourism web sites, including information on local and regional cuisine, tours and routes, monuments, art, architecture, upcoming events, etc. Other translation experience includes brochures and texts for web sites for different hotel chains and dozens of other accommodation properties, including information on their facilities and services, local attractions, etc. I have also translated a book about nineteenth-century painters and their works (ISBN: 84-7630-842-6).

Food and Wine: Menus, restaurant reviews, articles and all types of food-related texts. Wine articles, tasting notes, harvest notes and marketing pieces for wineries. I have also done a number of translations about olive oil.

Technical: My work in this area has encompassed a wide variety of subject matter, including, but not limited to, the following:

Steel: Different manufacturing processes and equipment (coke and steel production, hot and cold rolling, pickling, annealing, galvanizing, etc.)

Railroads: Technical specifications for a high-speed rail line and for a metropolitan railway system. Ongoing work in 2007 and 2008 translating texts relating to locomotive specifications.

Telecommunications, Computer and Electronics: Mostly technical specifications and RFQ's, as well as a series of user's manuals and product information brochures for a leading manufacturer of broadcast and audio systems (audio codecs, on-air consoles, software applications, etc.).

Architecture, Construction and Engineering: Architectural and engineering reports, for buildings and civil structures such as bridges, dams, etc. Lectures and speeches by architects and engineers. Architect's web site. Extensive experience with insurance adjustment reports on physical damage to all kinds of property and structures. Brochures and specifications for construction materials such as bricks, roofing tiles, concrete, geotextiles/geogrids, etc. Translated architects' descriptions of their work for a book entitled Spain Architects (ISBN: 84-9345-250-5).

Environmental: Corporate experience as the creator and coordinator of a company-wide "Reduce-Reuse-Recycle" plan and author of a public service brochure entitled "A Shopper's Guide to Environmental Issues." Translations of a wide variety of texts in this area, including environmental impact assessments, clean-up plans, and texts dealing with waste management, recycling, renewable energy, wind farms, etc. Volunteer work: Translation of news articles and presentations to raise public awareness about Spain's worst environmental disaster, the fuel-oil spill from the tanker "Prestige" off the coast of Galicia.
