Bio
Hello!

I am a freelance French>English and German>English translator with a background in healthcare, hospitality and social housing. I work from home in Falmer, East Sussex, UK. I translate a wide variety of texts from tourist guides to technical specifications, but I have two main areas of specialism.

Medical

I am a qualified massage therapist and I worked in this field for almost four years. I have studied Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology to OCN Level 4. I have six years' experience of working alongside medical and healthcare professionals including osteopaths, chiropractors and doctors, as a massage therapist, practice manager and hospital health care assistant.

From 2006-2008, I was the practice manager at an osteopathic practice for adults, babies and children. Through promoting osteopathy within Sheffield and South Yorkshire, I deepened my knowledge of the subject and broadened my medical terminology. I am in the unique position of having knowledge about healthcare from a range of perspectives and an ability to find the appropriate language to communicate with medical professionals and lay-persons alike.

Through my MA in Technical and Specialised Translation at the University of Westminster, I am trained in medical translation and have experience of translating patient information leaflets, journal articles, pharmaceutical studies and websites.

Charities: International development, Social sector

I have a long-standing interest in international development and am a member of a number of humanitarian organisations. I have recently translated a variety of documents in this field, including annual reports, internal memorandums and training documents for Oxfam, Amnesty International and the Panos Institute West Africa.

I have five years' experience of youth work within charitable organisations, in youth groups and in supported housing for young people. Through working in this field I have in-depth knowledge of young people’s services and social issues, experience of fundraising and monitoring and evaluation. I also have a good working knowledge of confidentiality policy, equality and diversity and human rights issues.

Other fields of work

I have a broad experience of work that supports my translation practice. I have a feel for marketing and I enjoy the persuasive style of product descriptions and press releases. I currently translate marketing materials for a client specialising in coin collecting, and I have recently worked on translations for the websites of Bank of Africa, and the King Fahd Hotel in Senegal. I also have experience of translating technical documents such as manuals, technical specifications and industry standards.

Work ethic

I work well to deadlines and I like to be realistic when I take on a new job. I am a very good communicator and I work well with project managers to ensure that the terminology I use is appropriate, the client is fully satisfied with the work done and that deadlines are met. I have a very good eye for detail and a love of the English language.

Qualifications and training

I have a bachelor’s degree in French and German from Oxford Brookes University and I am now midway through a master’s degree in Technical and Specialised Translation at the University of Westminster.
