All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Viaje
Todo viaje es hoy una mera excusa para llevar la cámara de fotos de un lado a otro, todo viajero está regido por la lente todopoderosa. Los fotógrafos, que dan por sentado que, mientras proceden con sus rituales de enfoque, nada ni nadie debe moverse o cruzarse en su campo visual, corren a empujones a los veraneantes anticuados que se contentan con pararse y mirar con sus ojos anacrónicos. Esas peculiares almas sin cámara se deben hacer a un lado para dar lugar a aquellos que están apropiadamente ocupados, deben esperar mientras los ómnibus se detienen y desatan sobre el paisaje al dios instantáneo. Y los pobladores de todos los países que se ven canibalizados, deglutidos, aspirados por el ojo fijo, negro y redondo, les sacan lo que pueden a los caníbales. ¿Querer fotografiar mi casa, mi camello? Usted pagar.
Nada de esto importaría, tal vez, si se lograra algo que valiera la pena. Si todo este constante ajetreo y clickeo produjera al final algo que no hubiera existido antes, imágenes de la belleza capturada o de una verdad contada. Pero, lamentablemente, no es así. La cámara no es más que un graffiti autorizado.
La cámara es el medio por el cual estampamos nuestra presencia en todo lo que vemos, con la excusa de estar registrando las maravillas del mundo –que ya están maravillosamente registradas por profesionales, y a la venta en todas las librerías y en los kioscos de todas las esquinas. ¿Pero de qué nos sirve mostrarle a la tía Maruja, una vez de regreso en casa, una postal del paisaje toscano, si nosotros no aparecemos en la foto como prueba de que estuvimos allí?
Ninguna extensión de piedras existe a menos que yo esté entre ellas. Ningún monumento tiene existencia si no fuera porque mi esposa está reclinada contra él. Ningún templo tiene interés alguno si mi cara sonriente no aparece junto a él. Con mi cámara me adueño de todo lo que es hermoso, lo poseo, lo reduzco, lo domestico, lo reproduzco y lo cuelgo en la pared vacía de mi sala para probarle a una audiencia selecta de amigos y familiares el único y absoluto hecho vital sobre estas bellezas: yo las he visto, he estado allí, las fotografié y ergo, existen.
