Translation - English I dream of Corfu. I dream of getting back there. Dream of diving into the tender transparent waters of the neat, embraced by low groves bays on its east coast and of aerating my thoughts by the playful wind over the intractable sandy beaches on its west coast. Dream of stodging with cloven overripe figs and grilled sea bream. Dream of climbing up the Mount Pantokrator and counting the lizards, turtles and the overflying unseen birds. Dream of fooling about the tiny cafes, thrust through in the recesses of the narrow streets of the main town of Corfu and insanely taking photos of the colorful flourishing yards and lawns scattered all over the island. But most of all, I dream of remembering the sharp invigorating scent of blooming orange trees.
Orange-Blossom-4f21feb373d2a_hiresThe first time I caught this piercing smell, it felt like thousands of fine needles stuck into my nasal mucosa and transfused me optimistic arousing elixir. That is quite justified - neroli oil is one of the safest and most widely used oils in aromatherapy. According to the traditional Chinese medicine, it activates chi (life-giving energy, yin and yang in harmony), while in Ayurvedic and yoga practices it is associated with the second chakra (svadhishthana, sacral chakra in the area of the lower abdomen up to the navel, the connection between the physical and the emotional / mental body, water realm of emotions and sexuality). Neroli is an excellent alternative to most synthetic anti-depressants, sedatives and tonics indicated for insomnia, anxiety, neuralgia, headaches, dizziness and fainting, even for shock conditions to restore and balance the heart rate. This is one of the few oils that are neither toxic nor photosensitizing and could be given to children or pregnant women. Moreover, it can be applied undiluted directly to the skin. I have not yet tested the emollient and skin regenerating properties, but I will since I recently injured my legs by sagging into a street shaft and got a big ugly scar on my left shank. Neroli oil is attributed the ability to smooth wrinkles and stretch marks, to heal broken capillaries and erase deep scars.
401px-NeroliIn perfumery, the scent of orange blossom is obtained from two major components - from neroli oil, extracted by steam or water distillation of flowers and orange blossom absolute, extracted by treatment with various (mainly alcoholic) solvents. In both cases, the resource that is used are the flowers of the bitter orange tree - Citrus aurantium var. amara or Citrus bigaradia. Professionals argue that there is a difference in the aroma of the two substances, but I still haven't had a chance to check it out. I cannot trust entirely the perfume that have them as main ingredients, because the compositions are complex and sometimes the aromatic environment completely changes the characteristics of the raw materials. However, so far I found that the neroli oil exhibits a more cutting action without much sweetness, while the orange blossom absolute (I will refer to it here and in subsequent publications only as "orange blossom") is a soft, fluffy scent with the indolic notes of the most jasmine derivatives and with sweet undertones.
sevilla-122It turns out that it is debatable where the name 'neroli' comes from. The bitter orange trees were brought by the Moors from the Far East (Northeast India, Myanmar and China) in today's Mediterranean orange possessions in Turkey, Greece, Italy and especially Spain. The Moors brought knowledge of irrigation facilities, as well and thus contributed to the expansion of the cultivation of bitter oranges, especially in Seville and its surroundings. 'Seville orange 'is another name of the bitter orange variety. In Sanskrit the word for orange is 'nagaran' , while in Arabic - naranj. 419px-Princesa_de_los_UrsinosCertanly, the history does not tolerate simple explanations and gradually emerged many theories - from the Roman Emperor Nero with his mad staging; from the Countess 'La Nerola', which is argued to be either the Princess Anne - Marie de Orsini, who lived in the 16th century or the Duchess Marie-Anne de La Tremoille, who lived in the 17th century (or may be the same person who lived at the end of the one and the beginning of the next century and changed their name due to changes in marital status), who soothed her nerves, scented her bath and sprayed her gloves with oil of orange blossom, and along with this enchanted the Roman rulers and was leading a pro-French policy. Whatever the truth, she made famous the neroli oil at exactly that time and place - in Late Renaissance Italy. In the early 18th century, a visionary Italian, Giovanni Maria Farina (Jean Marie Farina) began selling Eau de Cologne - a mixture of lemon, bergamot, lavender, petitegrain, rosemary and neroli oil that perfumes half the world even today and that gave birth to a whole section in perfumery - the refreshing cologne. It is said that neroli is one of the 'secret' ingredients in the 'top-secret' formula of Coca - Cola soft drink, but considering that the usual distillation with 1 liter of water of one kilogram orange blossom gives only 1 g of oil, it is unlikely that such an affordable product like Coca-Cola can use an expensive raw material as neroli. Besides, I do not sense the orange blossom there, but mainly cinnamon and cloves.
gd_estate_-_gerry_pigeons_medOnce I got back from Corfu, I tried to learn as much as possible about the island. People usually do the opposite and get informed before reaching the coveted destination, but in fact our trip was scheduled for another place that was changed the days before we left. On the recommendation of an 'aromatic' friend, I read 'My Family and Other Animals "by Gerald Durrell. Well, shame on me, I didn't read the book when I was a girl and now I am looking at the world of little Jerry through different kind of glasses but it all seems very attractive, curious, enriching and satisfying. On the one hand, I was agitated as a first-grader about the wildlife so thoroughly described by Jerry - hundreds of cicadas, ephemeras, earwigs, grasshoppers, beetles, scorpions, trapdoor spiders, frogs, brooding swallows, fighting turtles, birds' eggs, fireflies, praying mantises, bats , dormice, clams, corals, sea dogs, sea urchins, sea anemones, octopodes, crabs, sea spiders, water snakes; the bigger players - four dogs - the faithful Roger, the puppies named Widdle and Puke, the plump Dandie Dinmont terrier Dodo, the wild-strawberries lover Achilles the tortoise, the marching pigeon Quasimodo, Ulysses the Scops owl, the brave gecko Geronimo, who fought the huge mantis named Cicely, the puckish Magenpies and the temperamental gull Alecko. On the other hand, I appreciated Gerry's deep insight (not even entered the teen age) of the colors and flavors shown by the vivid descriptions of the three houses where his family lived on the island, as well as of some of the nooks of memorable experiences - the first Strawberry Pink Villa with lush bougainvilleas, fragrant violets and dark red velvet roses, the second Daffodil Yellow Villa surrounded by lemon, orange and tangerine groves, geraniums and pasque flowers, the third Snow White Villa with the large magnolia, olive grove with a carpet of cyclamen, the Lake Antiniotissa with the huge dune overgrown with sand lilies whose perfume is "the distilled essence of summer." There is no way one can remain indifferent to the skillful and resurrecting language of Gerald Durrell and the desire for such experiences becomes even stronger, especially after I had been really touched by at least a small piece of that wild beauty. On top of that, even without intently exploring the Flora of the island, I was very amazed by Corfu's plant diversity, especially when I saw a bee orchid (Ophrys apifera - a rare orchid species in Bulgaria and included in our Red Book) right beside the main road, 2 meters away from an unsuspecting peacefully grazing donkey. That moment is stuck in my mind - the orange blossoms were emitting an intoxicant scent as if to sedate me to sleep under the crooked old olive and stay on the island forever ...
P1150188My lyrical drift detaches me easily from the intended purpose of the publication, but there is nothing lyrical in the recent-year blow of fragrances, both hypermarket and niche, with the presence of neroli or orange blossom in the composition. It became somewhat trite, in a gray, dully sweet, almost transparent at times or milky interpretation of the note, which is felt wafting from every third woman. I visited Corfu in the spring of 2008 and since then I started looking for the initially cutting, but eventually numbing scent that I breathed at each step on the island. Hard and time-consuming work, but I found it in the bottle of A Scent Soleil de Neroli - Issey Miyake. So natural and piercing, that I badly need to take an extra breathe. The first step and inhalation is bitter, green, with cucumber aquatic perception, with eye-opening and hair-scrambling wind. On the second step and inhalation bubbles pop and white petals unfold in an aldehyde-indolic synchrony. After the third step and inhalation, I can relax in the musky- powdered cleanliness, without excessive sweetness. Everything is measured, Japanese style. Perfectly sleek and shiny sword from which you want to die. No ingredient prevails and they all joined forces to make the perfume as close as possible to the natural scent of the bitter orange trees. Actually, the very perfume in certain circumstances brings me to the edge of endurance because it unlocks a hardly bearable headache - usually in great heat, traveling by car or bus and during a hormonal discomfort. Therefore, I am careful and I usually enjoy its almost mono-neroli company on cool, but sunny days. Now, in the summer, I take it out of the box just to remind myself that I can dash in the car and drive off in Southwest direction to the mysterious island of Circe.
