Попробуем избавиться как минимум от трех вечных аспектов этого вопроса: политики, удачного расположения Украины на карте Евразии и того, как хорошо там, где нас нет. В этот раз предметом нашего разговора станут украинский геном, современные писатели и тракторы.
Раньше обезьян
Говорят, первый человек на Земле (еще до появления Украины)был украинцем. Это потом появились НЛО, обезьяныи так далее.Но тем, кто считает, что мы самая гордая нация в мире, можно возразить: с одной стороны у нас не менее «dumni ludzie», поляки, с другой – Россия с непростым менталитетом. Кажется, гордость нам перепала от кого-то «по наследству». Да ився украинская ментальность, формировавшаяся тысячелетиями, построена на балансе унаследованного слева и справа.
Осенью 2012-го ТРК «Украина» уже задавался подобным вопросом в проекте «ДНК: Портрет нации». Эксперты выявили четырех основные наших предков. Ими стали кельты, скандинавы, трипольцы и арийцы. Попробуем разобраться, кому за что мы должны быть благодарны.
Скорее всего, от кельтов, населявших едва ли не половину Европы, а также прочно укоренившихся в Англии и Шотландии, нам досталась экспансивность. «Що не з’їм, то понадкушую» – эта метко выражает стремление украинцев априори считать своим все, до чего удалось дотянуться, и желание «отметиться».
Второй источник украинского гена – Скандинавия. От варягов мы унаследовали гораздо больше, чем от кельтов, хотя и несколько позднее. Мы любопытны, нам интересны другие страны и континенты. Иоанн Вишенский еще в XVI веке дошел до Афона, Павел Русин – не только добрался до Германии, а и вернулся с четырьмя тысячами стихотворений. Еще одна унаследованная черта – умение быстро объединяться и отправляться в бой.
Трипольцы, эти полумифические протоукраинцы, подарили нам целый букет черт. Мы привязаны к земле, в целом добродушны, жадны до знаний. В отличие от России XIX века, украинских детей не заставляли работать с младенчества, а стремились отдать дьячку или мудрой бабушке на попечение. Как и 200 лет назад, долг родителей сегодня – дать достойное образование.
А вот с ариями все просто. От них нам, как и 90% европейцев, досталось крепкое здоровье (устойчивость к перепаду температур, молочная толерантность, выносливость)и приятная внешность. А еще мы, как и другие европейцы, ярко выраженные индивидуалисты.
Против всех
Хотите узнать секрет украинцев? На самом деле нам не нужна ни Европа, ни Азия. Украинцам, было бы комфортно, населяй они всю планету. Только скучно и поговорить не с кем – и в этом вся беда.
В 2011-ом, на пресс-конференции со съемочной группой фильма «Той, що пройшов крізь вогонь», журналистка спросила: «Если вы снимали фильм о национальном герое, не хотите ли сказать, что сбежать из Украины и, наконец, прославиться за рубежом – единственный выход для него?». Вопрос справедливый, даже если абстрагироваться от картины Михаила Ильенко. Украинцам нужна третья сторона для самоидентификации, без этого независимого арбитра мы не чувствуем себя украинцами. Наш национальный герой занятный тип, задолго до XIX века с его эпохой романтизма мы вырастили настоящий байронический типаж: перед нами исключительный герой, который ищет исключительные обстоятельства, чтобы раскрыть свой потенциал. И остаться украинцем-даже-в-Африке.
Я участвую в международных социальных проектах уже пять лет, и у каждого украинца, которого встречала –в чемодане хранился украинский флаг. Патриотизм наш играет яркими красками только при наличии аудитории.
Юрий Андрухович, флагман украинской литературы, начал карьеру с европейских грантов и творческих резиденций. Действия четырех из шести его романов разворачиваются за границей. Причем как за восточной, так и за западной. Москва в то время – не заграница, это ясно. Но в стихотворениях «свое» поставлено в оппозицию с «их». Украинцам нужна точка опоры, чтобы переворачивать Землю.
А загляните как-нибудь на официальный сайт украинской этно-группы «ДахаБраха», в раздел расписания гастролей. Нью-Йорк, Милан, Стокгольм, Москва и даже Токио, три концерта в неделю – минимум. Но на родине квартет любят далеко не единодушно, о чем говорят немногочисленные «Киев» да «Одесса» в гастрольном графике. И вряд ли это потому, что у нас нет вкуса. Просто у каждого из нас в голове уже играет своя «ДахаБраха».
Безответная любовь плодит стереотипы
Если спросить шведа о том, что он знает об Украине – он, как минимум, помянет Мазепу, Чернобыль, Шевченко и Кличко. Потом вспомнит о проблеме лицензированного софта и вообще интеллектуальном праве. Чуть позже в разговоре всплывут сало, борщ и красивые девушки. А теперь встречный вопрос: что мы можем сказать о Швеции, опустив Карла XII и водку Absolut. Шведская семья, шведский стол, шведская АВВА и Стокгольмский синдром? А о Норвегии или Бельгии?
В 2005 году в издательстве Viking Press вышла книга A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian и повествовала о жизни почтенного английского дедушки, которого на старости лет захомутала украинская мать-одиночка, обладательница крупного бюста и копны желткового цвета волос. С двадцатой страницы история любви начинает перемежаться историческим экскурсом во времена Голодомора, УПА и даже развала СССР. Автор не устает напоминать о розовом лаке на ногтях, отросших темных корнях волос. До неправдоподобности утрированные стереотипы? Куда там! К 2007-му книга уже была переведена на 33 языка и пользовалась пулярностью в течение трех лет по обе стороны океана. «С редкой элегантностью Марина Левицкая пишет о 80-летних», – отмечает Village Voice. «Сюжет несет в себе заряд социальной сатиры, хорошие шутки и добрую дозу балагана. Все вместе складывается в умную и трогательную историю», – поддакивают в The Daily Telegraph.
Соглашаться или нет – дело ваше. Из этой поучительной истории можно сделать вывод: в Европе нас любят. Может быть, снисходительно, но искренне. И уж точно к нам привязаны гораздо больше, чем мы к Европе.
P.S. Край или на краю?
Название нашей страны – интересный топоним. Академическая версия гласит, что «Украина» произошла от древнерусского «оукраина», то есть «пограничная область». Альтернативная ссылается на слово «украина», которое существовало наряду с «оукраиной» и означало «землю, населенную своим народом». Землю, понимаете? Так, может быть, первый человек на Земле все-таки был украинцем?

Before apes
They say the first man on Earth (even before Ukrainian state emerged) was Ukrainian. Long before aliens and apes. But those who think Ukrainians are the most cocky nation of the world should take a closer look at our next door neighbors: from one side the Polish «dumni ludzie» (just as proud), from the other – this mysterious Russia. When it comes to our national pride it surely looks like we take after somebody. Moreover, Ukrainian mentality, which took thousands of years to shape up, seems to reflect the fine balance between what we inherited from our left door and right door neighbors.
The autumn 2012 TV channel TRK “Ukrayina” has already looked into this issue for the documentary “DNA: A portray of our nation”. The experts have revealed four nations as our ancestors. These were Celts, Scandinavians, Trypillians and Arians. So let’s try to look into our ancestors and the traces they left in us.
Celts, who once spread around half of Europe and settled down in England and Scotland, most likely gave us our love for expansion. “If I can’t eat it, I’ll at least have a bite” – this proverb is quite accurate at describing our inclination to consider as “ours” everything within our reach, our wish to leave a trace anywhere we go.
The second source of Ukrainian genome was Scandinavia. Varyags left more traces in us although they appeared later. We are curious, interested in other countries and continents. Johan Vyshensky traveled to Afon (quite a journey in XVIth century). Pavel Rusyn not only made it to Germany, but also came back bringing along four thousand poems. Another inherited trait would be ability to quickly unite against a common enemy.
Trypillians, these half mythical proto-Ukrainians, passed on a whole bunch of characteristics. We are attached to our land, generally peaceful, eager to learn. In XIX century, unlike Russians, Ukrainians never forced their children to work, but rather sought out an apprenticeship at the local priest’s or a wise elder. The tradition still stands: nowadays, like 200 years ago, each parent’s sacred duty is to provide a child with proper education.
The Arian connection is the most trivial. They passed on to us – along with 90% of Europeans – strong health (resistance to low temperatures, lacto tolerance, general stamina) and good looks. In addition we, like other Europeans, are absolute individualists.
Against all
Now I will let you in on a secret. In all fairness we don’t need neither Europe nor Asia. Ukrainians would feel most comfortable if they populated the whole planet. Although they would probably get a bit bored, you know, having no one else to talk to, that’s the problem.
In 2011 during a press conference with the crew that had worked on the film “Firecrosser” a journalist asked “If this is a film about a national hero, does this mean that for you escaping from Ukraine and finally becoming famous abroad is the only way out?”. A fair question even regardless of the Mykhailo Illienko’s film. Ukrainians need a third party for self identification, in the absence of this arbitrary we simply don’t feel ourselves Ukrainians. Our national hero is of a peculiar kind. Indeed, long before the XIX century with its era of Romantism, we cultivated a true Byron-like archetype – an extraordinary man who is looking for exceptional circumstances in order to live up to his potential. And to retain Ukrainian identity even in Africa.
I have been taking part in international social projects for five years now and every Ukrainian that I met had a Ukrainian flag in his suitcase.
Yuri Andrukhovych, a mainstream Ukrainian writer, started his career with European grants and artist-in-residence programs. In four of his six novels events take place abroad (in the East as well as in the West). Or let’s take another Ukrainian pioneer – Lina Kostenko. Although it’s true that her only connection to the foreign countries would be through her children, the first thing that crosses your mind when you hear her name is sharp anti-Soviet satire in her poems. Yes, Moscow wasn’t “abroad” at that time, and yet her poetry is all about drawing the line between “us” and “them”. Ukrainians need a supporting point to spin the Earth. And if you ever happen to visit the official web site of a Ukrainian ethnic group “DakhaBrakha”, just take a look at their tours schedule. You’ll find New York, Milan, Stockholm, Moscow and even Tokyo. Three concerts a week at least. However in their home country they are not spoiled with the public’s attention. Hence just a few instances of “Kiev” and “Odessa” in their tight schedule. This is unlikely to result from our lack of taste. It’s just that we don’t need to go to their concerts to hear these tunes – they are a part of us.
Unrequited love generates stereotypes
If you ask a Swede about Ukraine he will at least mention Mazepa, Chernobyl, Shevchenko and Klichko. Then he will think of soft ware piracy and intellectual property in general. A bit later lard, borshch and beautiful girls will emerge. Now, how about cross examination? What do we know about Sweden apart from Karl XII and Absolut vodka? The Swedish buffet, ABBA and the Stockholm syndrome? And what about Norway or Belgium?
In 2005 году VikingPress published A Short History of Tractors in Ukraine a novel about an old respectable English gentleman who was seduced by a Ukrainian single mother with big breasts and hair dyed blond. After the twentieth page this love story is cut short every now and then for the sake of flashbacks into Ukrainian history featuring Holodomor, The Ukrainian Insurgent Army and even the fall of Soviet Union. The author repeatedly mentions pink nail polish and sloppy hairstyle. Too much of a stereotype, you think? And yet the novel was translated into 33 languages and enjoyed great popularity on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. “Marina Levitskaya’s descriptions of 80-year-olds are exquisitely elegant” notes Village Voice. “The plot is charged with social satire, good jokes and a great deal of buffoonery. All of which adds up to a clever and touching story” affirms The Daily Telegraph.
Whether you agree or not is up to you. Still we can draw a simple conclusion here: they like us in Europe. Maybe with a bit of condescension, but quite genuinely. And this general liking is definitely stronger than what we feel for Europe.
P.S. The edge or on the edge?
The very name of our country is an interesting toponym. Academics claim that “Ukraine” was derived from an Ancient Russian word “oukraina”, which meant “border area”. An alternative theory says that along with “oukraina” there existed “ukraina” which meant the earth populated by its people. Earth, right? So, could it be that the first man on Earth indeed was Ukrainian?

Source text - English Growing up with a parent who misuses drugs or alcohol can be harrowing. But it is tragically common. As many as 1 in 10 children in the UK live with a parent with a substance misuse problem. These children are at risk of a huge range of harms, including poverty, physical and emotional abuse or neglect and dangerously inadequate supervision. All too often, these families end up in family court, at risk of having their children removed.
Today we release a new report, looking at the Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC) – a London court that is working to transform the way such cases are dealt with in order to improve outcomes for children.
Tackling the root causes of family break down
FDAC helps to keep families together where possible, and places children in permanent new homes quickly where necessary. It’s one of England and Wales’ most successful problem solving courts and an example of successful innovation which offers lessons for others trying to introduce new ways of working.
FDAC is different from normal care proceedings in two key ways. First, FDAC families are supported by a multi-disciplinary specialist support team. As well as organising addiction treatment, the team coordinate a programme of more personalised support, such as help with parenting skills or counselling to help parents come to terms with their own traumatic childhoods. Second, the FDAC court process is designed to motivate and support families to address their substance misuse. FDAC cases are managed via fortnightly hearings where families and the treatment team meet with the judge without their lawyers in order to frankly and openly discuss their progress.
A recent Nuffield Institute-funded evaluation by Brunel University concluded that FDAC families are more likely to stay together, that parents are more likely to reduce their drug use, and are less likely to demonstrate further neglect and abuse compared to similar families passing through mainstream family courts. Former clients cite the importance of the support and encouragement of the judge and the co-ordinated care overseen by the treatment team as helping them succeed. There are now a number of sites elsewhere in the country replicating the London approach.
What can social services innovators learn from FDAC’s success?
Our research set out to identify which decisions made early on by FDAC set the court up for long-term success – and how these might be relevant to other social service innovations. Here are four of the most important:
1. The FDAC team had a clear picture of the problem they were trying to solve. The high incidence of parental substance misuse in care proceedings in inner London (64% of cases), and the poor outcomes for children were already well-documented, making the project an easier sell to colleagues, local authorities and funders.
2. They made intelligent use of the evidence that already existed about what works. FDAC’s founder and advocate, Judge Nicholas Crichton, borrowed the initial idea from California’s drug treatment courts. But the team carried out detailed research to understand how to tailor that model to fit the very different context of Inner London.
3. The project had an independent evaluation built in from the start. The project launched with an independent evaluation team from Brunel University, supported by the Nuffield Institute, already in place.
4. FDAC minimised the investment required by making creative use of existing resources. While funding was sought for the specialist treatment team, the additional review hearings were supported by reallocating existing courts staff, which significantly reduced the headline cost of the project.
