Verglüht in lauter Leidenschaft
Zum Tod von Rudolf Augstein

Rudolf Augstein ist tot, die letzte große Gründergestalt des deutschen Nachkriegsjournalismus - und damit doch auch der zweiten deutschen Republik verstorben. Gerd Bucerius, Marion Gräfin Dönhoff, Henri Nannen und Axel Cäsar Springer - allesamt Persönlichkeiten, denen das Geld weitaus weniger wichtig war als die Geltung dessen, was sie publizistisch produzierten. Rudolf Augstein war der jüngste unter ihnen, einer der zwar den Weltkrieg noch erlebt hatte, aber keiner, der schon erwachsen war, als die Hitlerei und der Krieg begannen. Und auch der modernste unter ihnen: Denn sein Spiegel brachte damals ein hoch modernes Medium zum Vorschein, das es bis dato hierzulande noch nicht gegeben hatte: Das Nachrichten-Magazin - investigativ, also streng faktenbezogen in der Recherche ("na ja" - mag da mancher von Fall zu Fall gesagt haben), durchgehend spöttisch im Tonfall. Also anti-autoritär mit immenser Autorität.
Bucerius, Springer und Augstein ragten aus dem Kreis der Genannten hervor, weil sie nicht nur Schreiber waren, sondern auch Verleger, um es im Spiegel-Jargon zu sagen: nicht nur Herausgeber, sondern auch Herausnehmer. Aber alle drei waren sie voneinander streng unterschieden: Bucerius war letztlich doch ein leidenschaftlicher Konservativer in der Sache, aber ungemein liberal im Umgang mit seinem eigentlichen Blatt, der ZEIT, dermaßen liberal, dass er andere Meinungen in der eigenen Publikation leidend genoss. Springer war konservativ in jedem Sinne, in der Sache wie in der Herrschaft über seine Redaktionen. Augstein hingegen war liberal in seiner Einstellung, aber doch höchst allergisch gegen andere Meinungen im eigenen Blatt, also letztlich doch autoritär. Alle drei aber ragten sie als Urgewächse über ihre Umgebung weit hinaus, auch dann noch, als das Alter sie unbarmherzig an ihre Endlichkeit erinnerte.
Nun wird viel über die Bedeutung des Lebenswerkes von Rudolf Augstein geredet werden -über den Spiegel als "Sturmgeschütz der Demokratie", über die Spiegel-Affäre vor 40 Jahren - das war im dreizehnten Jahr der zweiten Republik gewesen - (gerade konnte Augstein noch die Gedenkartikel dazu lesen). Und immer muss man auch an Augsteins großen Gegenspieler denken - an Franz Josef Strauß.
Gerade diese widerspruchsvolle Parallelität führt zu der Dimension, in der mir Augstein selber als tragische Figur erschien - und deshalb als menschlich: Beide, Strauß wie Augstein - bei allem Gegensatz -, strotzten geradezu vor Selbstbewusstsein und Ambition - und beide haben ihre letzte Ambition nie erreicht: politisch ohne Widerrede zu gestalten. Sie sind an ihrer Leidenschaft letztlich verglüht. Aber doch immerhin an einer Leidenschaft. Von Augstein weiß ich, dass er auch zur zarten Selbstkritik fähig war. In einem seiner Leitartikel hatte er mich für einen meiner Leitartikel fürchterlich gezaust. Zum Jahreswechsel danach erhielt ich den einzigen Brief meines Lebens von ihm: Er habe sich im zurückliegenden Jahr mir gegenüber ein wenig daneben benommen. Das wolle er wieder zurechtrücken. Schon gut, lieber, lieber: zorniger Rudolf Augstein.
Am Ende seines Lebens sagt man, oft allzu rituell, der Dahingegangene möge im Frieden ruhen. Ob Rudolf Augstein sich selber das wirklich wünschte - nach all diesen Kämpfen? Verdient hätte er es allemal.

Rudolf Augstein has died; the last great founding figure of German post-war journalism and indeed consequently of the second German republic. Gerd Bucerius, Countess Marion Dönhoff, Henri Nannen and Axel Springer - these were all personalities to whom money was by far less important than the worth of their contribution to publishing. Rudolf Augstein was the youngest among them; one who had still experienced the World War, but not one who had reached maturity when the Hitler movement and the war began. He was also the most modern of them. With his Spiegel, a highly modern media genre appeared that had not hitherto existed in Germany: namely the newsmagazine. It had a strictly-observed policy of investigative research based on firm facts (although from time to time there were those who may well have said "Oh really?") and it was persistently taunting in its tone of voice. In other words, anti-authoritarian and with an immense degree of authority.
Bucerius, Springer and Augstein stood out firmly among the latter, in that they were not just writers but also publishers. To use Spiegel jargon; "Not just contractors but also abstractors." However, all three were firmly distinct from each other. Bucerius was passionately conservative by nature, but notoriously liberal in his dealings with his own newspaper, DIE ZEIT. He was liberal to the extent of languishing in his enjoyment of seeing differing opinions being expressed within his own publication. Springer was conservative in every sense; by nature as well as in the dominance of his editors. Whereas Augstein's liberality in attitude, but strong allergy to varying opinions in his own paper, actually made him authoritarian. All three towered like mighty oaks far above their immediate environment, and that still when age ruthlessly reminded them of their mortality.
Much will now be said about the importance of Rudolf Augstein's lifework. About the Spiegel as the "heavy artillery of democracy"; about "the Spiegel affair" which took place in the thirteenth year of the second republic and about which Augstein just had time to read the commemorative article. And one must ever be reminded of Augstein's great antagonist - Franz Josef Strauß.
It is particularly this contradictory parallel which leads to a dimension in which Augstein appeared to me as a figure that was tragic and consequently human. Both Strauß and Augstein - despite their complete antithesis - virtually bristled with self-confidence and ambition, and neither ever achieved their last ambition of being able to shape politics without public opposition. It was their passion which finally consumed them. But it was nevertheless a passion. I know of Augstein that he was also capable of delicate self-criticism. In one of his leaders, he relentlessly mauled me for what I had written in one of mine. At the end of that year, I received my only letter ever from him. He admitted to a slight lack of manners in his treatment of me during the that year. It was this which he wanted to put right. That's fine; my dear, dear, angry Rudolf Augstein.
At the end of his life it is being said, in a way that could be described as over-ritualistic, that he should "rest in peace" - but is that what Rudolf Augstein would really have wanted for himself after all his campaigning?

Die Landwirtschaftliche Untersuchungs- und Forschungsanstalt Rostock der Landwirtschaftsbera-tung Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LUFA Rostock der LMS) kann auf eine über 125-jährige Tätigkeit zurückblicken. Von fortschrittlichen Landwirten zunächst als Landwirtschaftliche Versuchsstation gegründet, umfasst das Aufgabenspektrum heute u. a. die Untersuchung von Böden, Pflanzen, Ernteprodukten, Saatgut, Futtermitteln, organischen und mineralischen Düngemitteln, Wasser und Umweltproben sowie eine angewandte Forschung mit den Schwerpunkten Verbesserung der Untersuchungsmethodik, Umweltschutz und Vervollkommnung der Gehaltsklassen der pflanzenverfügbaren Nährstoffe der Böden.Die LUFA Rostock ist eingebettet in die Tätigkeit des Verbandes Deutscher Landwirtschaftlicher Untersuchungsund Forschungsanstalten (VDLUFA).
Bereits 1840 wurde von Justus von Liebig richtig erkannt, dass die Entwicklung von Pflanzen vordergründig von den mineralischen Nährstoffen abhängt, die der Boden an die Pflanze abgibt. Die Pflanzenanalyse spiegelt somit den momentanen Zustand der Versorgung der Pflanzen mit Nährstoffen wider. Deutlich ist auch, dass nur bei einer ausreichenden und ausgewogenen Nährstoffversorgung der Pflanzen ein hohes Ertragsniveau und letztlich eine gute Qualität der Ernteprodukte erreichbar sind. Entscheidend aber ist in diesem Zusammenhang die komplexe Beurteilung des Ernährungszustandes der Pflanzen, d.h. die Analyse sollte sich nicht auf einzelne wenige Nährstoffe beschränken. Hauptsächlich werden daher im Rahmen der Pflanzenanalysen-Kampagne die Mineralstoffe Phosphor, Kalium, Magnesium und Schwefel sowie die Spurenelemente Kupfer, Mangan und Zink bestimmt. Aus dem Ergebnis einer solchen Pflanzenanalyse lässt sich ableiten, ob eine optimale Nährstoffversorgung vorliegt oder ob zusätzliche Düngungsmaßnahmen in der Phase des Pflanzenwachstums sinnvoll sind, damit die oben genannten Zielsetzungen erreicht werden können.

LUFA Rostock is integrated within the activities of the VDLUFA (Association of German Agricultural Testing and Research Laboratories.
Justus von Liebig already correctly recognised in 1840 that the development of plants is primarily dependent on the mineral nutrients that are extracted by plants from the soil. Plant analysis therefore reflects the present situation regarding the nutrient supply of plants. It is also clear that a high crop level and consequently good quality harvest can only be achieved with an adequate and well-balanced supply of nutrients. However, a complex evaluation of the nutritional status of plants is also very important in this respect, i.e. the analysis should not confine itself to a few individual nutrients. It is therefore primarily the minerals phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and sulphur, as well as the trace elements copper, manganese and zinc which are included within the scope of a plant analysis program. From the results of such a plant analysis, it can be ascertained whether an optimal nutrient supply is present, or whether further fertilising measures are indicated during the plant growth phase in order to meet the aforementioned objectives.

EINE UNINTERESSANTE, ENDLOSE GESCHICHTE MIT ZIEMLICH HOHEM CHOLESTERINGEHALT
Wie man in der Provinz den Abend verbringt
Ich habe gehört, die Abbrecherquote im Fach “Philosophie” betrüge 83%. Obwohl ich zu den bizarren anderen 17% gehöre, kann ich das gut verstehen. Warum ein hartes, langes, sauteures und bis zur völligen Sozialunverträglichkeit isolierendes Studium absolvieren, nur um nach 14 Semestern annähernd das zu kapieren, was Oma schon immer gesagt hat. Was hat sie denn gesagt? Na, daß kein Licht ohne Schatten ist, und alles Schlimme auch was Gutes hat und so. Diese Art volkstümliche Yin-Yang-Dialektik, die einem bei echten Lebensproblemen (Warum ist Sabine mit dem Bademeister durchgebrannt? Wie schaff ich das mit dem Rauchenaufgeben? Wo krieg ich um diese Zeit noch was zu trinken her?) letztlich auch nicht weiter hilft. Im Sinne der gelassenheitsfördernden Oma-Dialektik könnte ich mir sagen: Okay, okay, es muß auch grotten-miese Horrorläden geben, sonst wüßte man die gastronomischen Kleinode nicht zu schätzen! – Ist das so? Dann erkläre man mir, warum immer nur bei UNS der Schatten ist, und das Licht ausschließlich in Wien, Berlin, Hamburg, oder, ja, ja, schon gut, im Badischen.
Es sollte überhaupt gar nichts Besonderes sein, gestern abend, bloß eine normale dünne, knusprige, herzhaft, nur bitte mit nicht so viel Käse!, belegte Steinofen-Pizza. Mit einmal extra Sardellen vielleicht. Anderswo, das weiß ich von Qype, sind damit die Straßen ganzer Viertel gepflastert (mit knusprigen Pizzen meine ich, nicht mit Sardellen natürlich! Wär ja eklig…) Aber sucht so etwas in Duisburg! Seit gestern sucht ihr noch länger, denn als wir in die PIZZA NAPOLI wollen, die einen guten Steinofen hatten, da ist dieser fort und man renoviert kaltschnäuzig. “Hier entsteht ein dringend benötigter hunderttausendster Telefon-Laden!” NAPOLI kaputt, Pizza pleite, oder Mafia weitergezogen, was weiß ich. Nichtmal auf die Halb-und Unterwelt an der Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße kann man sich mehr verlassen.
Leider bin ich so unflexibel. Wenn ich am Abend auf eine Pizza rausgehe, habe ich mich auf Pizza eingestellt, da kann ich jetzt nicht plötzlich auf Dim Sum oder Sushi umschalten, das liegt mir nicht. Antizipierende Vorfreude gehört bei mir zum Essen dazu. Außerdem, das wär ja, als würde man den ganzen Abend versuchen, ein Mädchen anzubaggern, und sich dann, wenn sie plötzlich von ihrem Freund abgeholt wird, sagen würde: “Pöh! Bin ich eben schwul.” Das wäre zwar ungeheuer flexibel und cool, aber eben nichts für mich. Vielleicht schon eine Spur Altersstarrsinn? Mag sein. Der Pizza-Plan wurde jedenfalls nicht geändert.
“DA PEPPINO”, hm, warum nicht. Neuer Besitzer, freundliches Licht, unaufgeregt einladende Einrichtung, italienische Speisekarte. “Den probiern wir jetzt mal aus!” – mit diesen Worten übernehme ich die Führung unseres Zweierteams und gehe voraus. Drinnen sind nur zwei, drei von acht Tischen besetzt. No reason to get Überforderung for the waiter, oder? Wir suchen uns eine gemütliche Nische, die leider dermaßen lauschig ist, daß wir sofort, wie Dornröschen, komplett in Vergessenheit geraten. Ich muß mich erst persönlich zum Kellner begeben und ihn einladen, uns doch mal mit einem gelegentlichen Besuch am Tisch zu beehren. Und was soll ich sagen? Er willigt ein! Er kommt! Dieser Vorstoß trägt uns die Eroberung zweier Speisekarten ein, nicht mehr, nicht weniger. Ich werde eigentlich gern gefragt, ob und was es schon zu trinken sein dürfte - und sei es, damit ich antworten kann: “Das entscheiden wir dann nach der Wahl des Essens”. Die Speisekarte ist zwar geschwind durchstudiert, doch der Kellner gönnt uns fürs Studium ein paar Semester mehr Zeit.
Zerstreut verfolge ich, um Hunger und Durst zu vergessen, die Performance am Nebentisch. Eine modische Mutter mit studentischer Tochter spielt heftig “Gilmore Girls”, nur ohne die witzigen Dialoge, und führt nebenher Handy-Gespräche. (Ich wundere mich immer: Da benutzen die Leute ständig hochmodernste Telekommunikationstechnologie, haben aber immer noch nicht mitgeschnitten, daß diese eigens erfunden wurde, damit man NICHT mehr zum Nachbardorf hinüberbrüllen muß…!) Ich erfahre so manches über wildfremde Menschen, was mit 'wissenswert’ vielleicht etwas übertrieben bezeichnet wäre. Dann muß ich aber erstmal wieder los, den Kellner suchen gehen.
Ihn von seinem Gespräch mit einem Stammgast loszueisen, ist keine Kleinigkeit.
Immerhin bekomme ich von ihm, der irgendwann doch noch einmal den Weg zu uns findet, auf meine Frage nach den angebotenen Weinen die zum Klassiker aufgerückte Antwort, es gäbe “rrote Wein unde weiße Wein”, was ich, konsterniert über so viel Auswahl, mit der spontanen Nachfrage kontere: “Und keinen Rosé?” Kamerad Cameriere verfällt ins Grübeln. ”....Si, si…ma…... si, ische glaubbe… ja, die… die Rosato gebbe auche!” gesteht er dann, nach deutlichem Zögern und mit viel innerem Widerstand. – Gut, dann schon mal davon!
Unser Sommelier dackelt ab, um sich auf die Suche zu geben. Aux la Recherche du vin perdu. Heftiges Wühlen, Graben, Flaschenklirren, Korken-Ploppen – ein veritables vinologisches Hörspiel! Mit einiger Grandezza wird uns schließlich ein bereits umgekippter, leicht terpentiniger Rosé (der lieber anonym bleiben möchte) in Zimmertemperatur (ca. 24°C) vorgesetzt, den wir – serve and volley – freundlich zurückgehen lassen. Signore kratzt sich ohne Spur von Verlegenheit hinterm Ohr und versetzt: “Ah…habbe isch falsche Flasche verwechselde…” und zieht wieder ab. Hilft nichts. Signore Schlitzohr muß die einzige Flasche gekühlten und unverdorbenen Rosés aus seinem Besitz für uns 'rausrücken und opfern, und das gibt Ärger, weil die Gilmore Girls auch Rosé möchten. Engpässe werden vorausgesehen, vorerst aber verdrängt. (Mist! Porco de Dio! Wie kann man denn ahne, dasse in Mitte von Settimane abends Gäste in Ristorante kome! Von blöde Gäste hadde il Padrone nixe gesaggde!)
Indessen – es gibt Essen! Schon nach 40 Minuten wird der Gattin ihr Salat und mir die starrsinnige verlangte Pizza gebracht. Hmmm, “Pizza Colesterino”, wie ich für sie sterbe: Zweieinhalb Zentimeter dicker, aufgeschwemmter, matschiger Teig, wahllos beschmissen mit Dosensardellen und -thunfisch, darüber dreiviertel Pfund fettiger, öliger, fädenziehender Industriekäse, der auf sich selber schwimmen kann, pfiffig und raffiniert verfeinert mit ca. drei Knollen Knoblauch und einem Esslöffel Chayenne-Pfeffer. Daß der dampfende Haufen Unglück unter dem Namen “Pizza Mafiosa” operiert, nimmt nicht Wunder. Wer das äße, bekäme eine Ladung Blei in den Bauch!

Ihr Salat heißt “Campagnola” und präsentiert sich als das mit Abstand liebloseste, breiigste, undefinierbarste, beängstigendste Gemisch organischen Materials, das ich seit den illegalen Müllbergen von Neapel aufgehäuft gesehen habe: Gut möglich, daß sich zwischen wäßrig welken Eisbergsalat-Strünken und verlebten Paprikastreifen auch Reste von Dosenfisch, grünlich verfärbte harte Eier und porös-moroser, bereits im Stadium pastoser Auflösung befindlicher Form-”Kochschinken” zum Sterben versammelt haben, dicke balsamico-creme-Tränen weinend, betrauert von ältlichen, runzlig vertrockneten schwarzen Oliven und zerfurchten Tomatenvierteln… kurz,
der Jammer der Welt, / in Gemüse dargestellt.
Schon bald oder sofort können wir nicht mehr mit ansehen, wie wir in dem herumstochern, was doch als eine gute Gabe Gottes geachtet werden möchte. Wir ordern mehr Wein, um herunterzuspülen, was ja nun nicht mehr zu ändern ist. Der Rosé ist aber aus. Haben wir ja geahnt. Nun gut, dann… – unser Sommelier läuft zu Hochform auf: “Äh…eine Frascati vielleicht?” Frascati? Das gibt es noch? Ich dachte, dieser üble Industrie”wein” aus einem römischen Anbaugebiet so groß wie Australien, sei ausgestorben wie Flokatis, Sitzsäcke und die 2-Liter-Flaschen Lambrusco von PLUS, aber nein, hier wäre er noch zu haben. Gut, dann nehmen wir noch einen Pinot Grigio…
... der so “grigio” ist, daß man ihn gut und gern auch als chemieversetzte, fiese, nach Petroleum und Tank-Schwefel schmeckende Übelbrühe bezeichnen könnte, wäre das denn korrektes vino- bzw. önologisches Vokabular. Wie sang einst Frank Zappa? “The torture never stops…” Yeah, you can say THAT again!
Der Abend findet schließlich seinen glanzvollen Abschluß, indem man uns ein Gläschen warmgemachten Billig-Amaretto mit Häubchen von chemo-therapeutisch versteifter Industrie-Sprüh-”Sahne” an Strohhalm kredenzt. “Du bist ja wirklich vor nix fies!”, erbleicht die Gattin, als ich davon sogar noch, weil ichs nicht glauben konnte, einen Tropfen “probiere”... Obwohl ich gegen solche Abende nicht versichert bin, hab ich den Schaden mit meiner Kreditkarte beglichen.
So, das war der Schatten…

AN UNINTERESTING AND ENDLESS TALE WITH A REASONABLY HIGH CHOLESTEROL CONTENT
How to spend your evening in the provinces.
I’ve heard that 83% of those studying philosophy abandon their course before conclusion. Although I belong to the bizarre remaining 17%, I can actually understand that. Why complete a long and disgustingly expensive university education that isolates you into complete social incompatibility, to still end up after 14 terms only partially understanding Granny's 'pearls of wisdom'? So what did Granny say then? Well: there is ‘no light without shadow’, a ‘good and a bad side to everything’, and all that kind of stuff. When all is said and done, this type of folksy Yin and Yang dialectics provides little help when applied to key issues in life (e.g. why did Pat piss off with the postman, how am I going to finally give up smoking, where the f**k can I still get a drink at this time of night?). Based upon all of Granny’s reassuring wisdom I could well say: “Okay. Foul, horrendous dives do indeed have a raison d’être. It’s because otherwise, we would not appreciate the true 'pearls' in the gastronomic ocean! So is that in fact the case? Then for chrissake please tell me just why WE HERE must lurk in the SHADOWS, while the LIGHT solely shines on places like Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg (or - O.K. guys - also in Baden).
It wasn’t even supposed to be anything special yesterday evening, just a normal, thin, crunchy, hearty and 'please go easy on the cheese’ stone-baked pizza. Maybe with an extra portion of anchovies. Elsewhere - and I know from this portal - the streets of entire neighbourhoods are plastered with them. Err - not with anchovies - that would be disgustingly scaly! I mean plastered with crunchy pizza joints. But try and find one in Duisburg. Indeed, since yesterday, your search will take even longer, because when we want to go to the PIZZA NAPOLI that boasts a fine stone oven, we discover that it has gone and that only cold-blooded building work is on the menu. “Duisburg’s urgently-needed one hundred thousandth mobile phone shop is being erected here.” So NAPOLI is kaput, pizza is busted, the mafia has moved on: what the hell do I know? You can’t even rely on the demimonde and underworld of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße any more.
Unfortunately, my flexibility has its firm limits. When I go out for a pizza, then I have adjusted my mindset to pizza. I cannot suddenly switch to dim sum or sushi, because that’s not my way. I need the joy of anticipation where food is concerned. Apart from that, it would be like spending a whole evening trying to pull a bird for and - when her fellow unexpectedly arrives to pick her up - saying: “Oh sod it, I’m gay anyway.” That would be incredibly flexible and cool, but it ain’t my way. A hint of stubborn grumpy old man already setting in? Could be. Anyway, the pizza plan remained firmly in force.
“DA PEPPINO”. Hrrm… Okay, why not? New owner, friendly lighting, calm and inviting decor, Italian menu. “Right - we are going to try them out!” With these words, I take on the leadership of our team of two and lead the advance. Inside, only three of eight tables are occupied. No reason to suffer from stressed-out waiter syndrome, then? We decide upon a cosy little corner. Unfortunately it is so much so, that like the Sleeping Beauty, we seem to be in a state of suspended animation. I first have to personally venture over to the waiter and invite him to be so kind as to honour us with the odd visit to our table. And what can I say? He agrees! He’s coming! My military advance achieves no more and no less than the capture of two menus. I confess that I am actually rather fond of being asked whether I would like a drink and what it should be - even if it’s just to answer in this case: “May we decide that when we have chosen our meal?” Studying the menu is a breeze, yet the waiter grants us a few further terms to complete our theses.
Distracted, I observe the performance at the next table so that I can forget my hunger and thirst. A fashionable mother with an untergrad-like daughter is trying to enact the ‘Gilmore Girls’ - albeit without the amusing dialogues - whilst yakking on her mobile in between times (it never ceases to amaze me. People constantly use state-of-the-art telecommunications technology without seeming to have downloaded the information that it was invented for the very reason that you NO LONGER NEED to bellow across to the neighbouring village any more…!). I get to learn a few things this way about complete strangers; knowledge that it would be a slight exaggeration to classify as being of staggering interest. But now I first have to scuttle off again in search of the waiter.
It proves to be no simple task to jemmy him out of his conversation with a regular guest. Nevertheless, he manages to find his way back to us and provides a classic answer to my question about any possible wines on offer. “We have da vino rosso and da vino bianco.” Taken aback by such a wide selection, I venture to counter with: “…and no rosé?” Comrade cameriere collapses into a state of brooding. “Si, si…ma…… si, I thinka - yes we got da, err, rosato as well!”, he admits, following a marked delay and with no small degree of inner resistance. Right, wheel some of that over then for starters please!
Our sommelier toddles off to go on search. La recherche du vin perdu. Heavy grubbing around, digging about, clinking of glasses and plopping of corks - a veritable vinological sound show! Subsequently, a turpentine-like decanted rosé (that would seemingly prefer to remain anonymous) is laid before us with grandeur (at a room temperature of approx.24°C) and we sportingly let it go back like a Wimbledon serve and volley. Signore scratches the back of his ear without a trace of embarrassment and retorts: “Ah. I mixa up da wrong vino, innit?” and beats a retreat. In vain. Signore wheeler-dealer then has to dig out and sacrifice the only bottle of cooled and unspoilt rosé in his possession which causes a little grief, because the Gilmore Girls would also like rosé. Possible bottlenecks are anticipated but initially forced aside (“Mamma mia! Stronzo! 'Ow can I know guests come to ristorante middle of da week! Il padrone no tell me about stupid guests, innit!”).
But why be rude - here comes the food! As early as 40 minutes after our arrival, Madame takes delivery of her salad and I am provided with my stubbornly requested pizza. Hmmm, a “Pizza Colesterino” that is clearly to die for. Two and a half centimetres of thick, bloated and soggy dough, gently blanket-bombed with tinned anchovies and tuna, above which there suppurates three quarters of a pound of fat, oily and stringy industrial cheese, subtly and ingenious garnished with some three lumps of garlic and a tablespoon of cayenne pepper. The fact that this steaming heap of doom operates under the alias of “Pizza Mafiosa” is hardly a surprise, because whoever were to eat it would certainly get a belly full of lead!
An amusing note: clearly singing from the same libretto, Madame and I simultaneously pipe up in unison: “Would you like to try some of mine?”
Her salad masquerades under the nomenclature of “Campagnola”. It is presented as by far the most spiteful, flaccid, indefinable and frightening mixture of organic material that I have ever seen stacked up since encountering the illegal fly tips in Naples. It seems highly possible that in between watery stalks of iceberg lettuce and ailing strips of paprika, there are also the remains of tinned fish, greenish-dyed hard-boiled eggs, and 'boiled ham’ in a state of pasty dissolution. All solemnly assembled to celebrate their last rites, weeping balsamic tears and mourned by elderly wrinkled desiccated olives and furrowed quartered tomatoes.
You could describe it as an ‘organic still life’ to illustrate Dante’s Inferno.
Very soon, if not earlier, we can no longer continue to watch how are listlessly pronging around in something that aspires in vain to being celebrated as a gift of God.
We order more wine to rinse down that which can no longer be changed. But the rosé is off. Done and dusted, as we expected. So - fine. Then our sommelier escalates into top form and says” “Frascati. Maybe da Frascati?” What? It’s still around? I thought that this disgusting industrial 'wine’ from a Roman area of cultivation the size of Australia had died the same death as shaggy Greek rugs, bean bag chairs and the 2-litre bottles of Lambrusco that the cheapest supermarkets used to sell but no, here the relic was still on exhibition.
Fine, we’ll take a Pinot Grigio - which turned to be so 'grigio’ that classifying it as a chemically-blended, disgusting, foul brew with a subtle suggestion of petroleum and sulphur would be the appropriate oenological terminology for even the lesser experienced wine taster. What did Frank Zappa once sing? “The torture never stops…” Shit - you can say THAT again!
The evening finally reaches its glistening conclusion when we are proffered a small glass of heated cheapo Amaretto with a topping of 'chemotherapy-resuscitated’ industrial aerosol ‘cream’ and a straw. Confused with pure disbelief, I even venture to actually 'taste’ a drop, upon which Madame visibly pales and says: “Is there nothing left that disgusts you?” Although I am not insured against such evenings, I settle their claim with my credit card.
So, that was the SHADOW.
