Первое документальное подтверждение изготовления главного предмета для чаепития относится к 1778 году: на улице Штыковой братьями Иваном и Назаром Лисицыными сделан первый образец. А уже в 1803 году на их фабрике работают 26 человек. Самовары Лисицыных славились разнообразием: бочонки, вазы с чеканкой и гравировкой, с кранами в виде дельфинов, с петлеобразными ручками. Пять лет спустя в Туле работает 8 самоварных фабрик, в 1850 году уже 28, а в 1890-м – уже целых 77! Кстати, один самовар делали семь мастеров. Наводильщик сгибал медный лист, спаивал его и выделывал какую-нибудь форму. Лудильщик вылуживал внутреннюю часть самовара оловом.Токарь точил на станке и полировал самовар. Слесарь делал ручки и краны к самоварам, сборщик из всех частей его собирал, чистильщик начищал, а токарь по дереву изготовлял деревянные шишки к крышкам и ручки. Ремесло самоварщика считалось престижным и непростым, а инвентарь для работы переходил по наследству, от отца к сыну.
С самоваром нужно было уметь управляться, ведь первые самовары были, разумеется, отнюдь не электрическими, а угольными. Чтобы растопить такой самовар, требовалось долгое время раскочегаривать его сапогом, похожим на меха баяна или гармони. Но даже этот трудоемкий процесс не смог погубить любовь народа к самовару. В каждом доме их было несколько: обычный – для ежедневного чаепития, парадный – на случай, когда приходили гости, детский – маленький самоварчик, который очень быстро закипал, его ставили на «детский» стол, но в основном использовали по утрам, чтобы быстрее попить чаю. Кроме этого, был бельевой самовар, в нем кипятили воду для стирки и мытья посуды. Самовар являлся настолько необходимым и ценным предметом, что его даже включали в девичье приданое. Вообще к самовару относились как к члену семьи: когда к крестьянину приходили взимать недоимки, то первым делом брали даже не корову, а самовар.
Translation - English Tula, the land of samovars. The first confirmed record of manufacturing of this important tea-drinking item dates back to 1778 and states that brothers Ivan and Nazar Lisitsyns manufactured their first specimen on the Shtykovaya street in Tula. By 1803 their factory was employing 26 people. The Lisitsyns' samovars were famous for their variety: some looked like casks, some were embossed, engraved and shaped like vases, some had taps fashioned after dolphins and some had looped handles. Five years later there were eight samovar works operating in Tula, by 1850 the number increased to 28, and by 1890 to 77! Incidentally, it took seven craftsmen to make one samovar. A coppersmith folded copper sheets, soldered and shaped them. A tinsmith tin-plated the inner surface of a samovar. A metal-turner turned it on a lathe and polished it. A metalworker made handles and taps, a fitter assembled and fitted the parts together, a metal polisher polished it and a wood-turner made wooden knobs and handles. The samovar-making craft was considered to be prestigious and complex, and work equipment was passed down from father to son.
Operating a samovar took some skill, since first models were naturally not electric, but coal-fuelled. In order to get the samovar going, one had to stoke up the fire with a leather boot that looked like the bellows of an accordion. Even such laborious process, however, could not ruin people's love for the samovar. Every household boasted a few: a plain one for daily tea drinking, a smart one for guest visits, a small children's one that was quick to boil and would usually be placed on the children's table, although more often than not it was used by everybody in the mornings in order to save time. In addition, sometimes there was a laundry samovar for boiling water for laundry and dish washing. The samovar was so indispensable and valuable that it was included in a girl's dowry. For many purposes, the samovar was treated as a family member, for example when a peasant owed back taxes, a samovar was sequestered first, even before a cow.

Андрей, по традиции, мне бы хотелось расспросить Вас о вашем с братом детстве?
- Мы выросли в Галичине, на Западной Украине. Ребятами мы были городскими, но каждое лето проводили у бабушки в деревне Калышино, где пасли коров и обучались мастерству сыроварения. Все это способствовало нашим мечтам о постройке собственной сырной фермы, и мы поступили в Киевский Национальный Аграрный Университет, на факультет Технологии производства молочных и мясных продуктов, который мы окончили с красным дипломом. Благодаря идентичной внешности, нам с братом сдавать экзамены было проще (смеется).
Получается, при внешнем сходстве, мечты и цели у Вас с братом тоже были одинаковыми?
- Да, как ни странно. Помогая бабушке по хозяйству в деревне, нам хотелось быть ближе к природе, к сельскому хозяйству. Нам это действительно нравилось; мы помогали не из под палки, а от души. Нам было интересно узнать побольше разных секретов приготовления кефира и творога, сыров и простокваши, а также как доить корову, водить трактор и т. д. Благодаря этим умениям мы становились трудолюбивыми и ответственными. Приучались встать на заре, доить корову, ведь иначе не будет молока. Именно бабушка вдохновила нас, и за это мы ей очень благодарны.
Андрей, это редкий случай, когда получив образование на родине, люди приезжали в Австралию и устраивались по профессии, а у Вас еще и смогла осуществиться мечта! Были ли трудности из-за языкового барьера?
- Мы с братом выбрали именно Киевский университетинститут, потому что он предлагал много перспектив. Нас направляли на практику в разные страны, благодаря чему мы объездили всю Европу, побывали на фермах в Швейцарии, Германии, Англии и Польше. Мы обучались и
делились технологией приготовления молочной продукции, могли реализовать свои теоретические знания, полученные в университете, плюс, мы изучили английский язык. К тому времени, как мы приехали в Австралию, мы сдали экзамен на знание английского, получив наивысший проходной балл.
А почему именно Австралия? Чем она Вас так привлекла?
- После окончания университета, полные энтузиазма, знаний и приобретенного в Европе опыта, мы хотели поехать в какую-то новую страну. Австралия манила своей неизведанностью, такая далекая и загадочная, она бросала нам вызов, и мы подали документы на независимую иммиграцию по нашей технологической специальности, сдали английский язык и буквально через полгода нам открыли дорогу на зеленый континент.
Я был первопроходцем в нашей семье, поехал один «на разведку». В аэропорту, где меня никто не ждал и не встречал, мне попалось на глаза объявление о работе с возможным проживанием на ферме. Долго не думая, не имея родственников и друзей, я отправился изучать истинный австралийский колорит. Проживал и помогал по хозяйству в фермерской семье, где поначалу не понимал ни слова, потому как это был не городской, а деревенский диалект, которого я, разумеется, не знал.
Честно признаюсь, я часто порывался вернуться обратно, т.к. думал, что не приживусь, и на тот момент меня ничего не держало. Но все же втянулся и решил поехать в Квинсленд поработать джакару (jackaroo, в переводе, молодой человек, работающий на выездных фермах и выполняющий широкий спектр работ; фермер-кочевник. (прим. автора)). Приехав в Австралию в 23 года и проведя полтора года на ферме, а потом работая в Квинсленде, я изучил австралийский быт, обычаи и все, что касалось сельского хозяйства от А до Я. Полностью погрузившись в новую культуру, и изолировав себя от внешнего мира, я стал даже думать как местный. Я не просто «влился», я настолько ассимилировался, что сейчас уже больше австралиец, нежели украинец (смеется). Это был интересный жизненный этап.
Как Вам пришла идея о создании своего бизнеса?
- К тому моменту как я исколесил все фермы Квинсленда и научился всем премудростям местной индустрии, я решил вернуться в Мельбурн. Как раз в это же время приехал мой брат Тарас и мы устроились работать на итальянскую ферму по производству сыров. Здесь мы обучались другим важным аспектам ведения бизнеса, а именно маркетингу, мерчендайзингу, продвижению товаров, расширению клиентуры, управлению персоналом и многозадачности. Работали мы очень тяжело и много, «тепличных условий» нам никто не обеспечивал и ничем не помогал. Мы учились не только бизнесу, но и психологии местного населения, пытались находить подход. Мы прошли хорошую школу жизни, так сказать, курс молодого бойца. Эти знания и опыт, который мы получали день за днем, помогли нам подготовить площадку для открытия собственного производства. По счастливому случаю мы приобрели оборудование для нашей будущей фабрики с огромной скидкой и долго искали место, и однажды, приехав на ланч в Морнингтон, мы увидели объявление о продаже помещения под фабрику. Ну и понеслось…

Andre, according to our tradition, I would like to ask you about your brother's and your childhood.
- We grew up in Galychina in Western Ukraine. We were city boys, but spent every summer at our grandmother's in the village of Kalyshino where we tended to cows and learned the art of cheese making. All this sparked our dreams of building our own cheese farm, and we enrolled in the faculty of Dairy and Meat Product Technology of the National Agricultural University in Kiev, and completed our studies with high distinction. Thanks to our identical appearance, my brother and I had an easy time passing our exams (laughs).
So, not only your looks, but your dreams and goals were also identical?
- Yes, as strange as it sounds. When we were helping nanna around the farm, we wanted to be closer to nature, to farming. We really did enjoy it; there was no pressure, and we really put our hearts into it. We were curious to learn all sorts of secrets about making kefir and cottage and other cheeses and fermented milk, as well as about milking a cow, driving a tractor and so on. Thanks to these skills we learnt how to work hard and be responsible. We got used to getting up at dawn and milking a cow, or else there wouldn't be any milk. It was our grandma who inspired us and we are immensely grateful to her for it.
Andre, it's not common for people moving to Australia to get into the line of work matching their education from back home, but you did it and to top it off you got to live your dream! Did the language barrier cause you any grief?
- My brother and I carefully chose the Kiev university because it offered a lot of prospects. Our practicum was arranged in several countries, and thanks to that we've been all over Europe, and stayed on farms in Switzerland, Germany, England and Poland. We learned and
shared the dairy making technology, got to apply our university-acquired theoretical knowledge, and, in addition, mastered English. Before coming to Australia we passed the English tests and got top marks.
Why Australia? What attracted you to it?
- After completing uni, and abounding with passion, knowledge and experience gained in Europe we wanted to go to a new country. Australia enticed us with its novelty, so faraway and mysterious. It was a new challenge; so we applied for independent migration visas on the strength of our technological vocation, passed IELTS and within six months we got green light to go to the green continent.
I was the explorer in the family and so I travelled on my own to suss it out / on a reconnaissance mission. No one was waiting for me at the airport, but I chanced upon a notice there that advertised a farm stay job. On a spur of the moment, with no relatives or friends to speak to consider, I headed off to explore the authentic flavours of Australia. I stayed in a rural household working as a farm hand, and at first I could not understand a word of what was being said because the dialect they spoke was not the city but the country one, which I obviously didn't know.
To be honest, I often considered going back because I didn't think I would get used to it all, and at the time there was nothing to hold me down. But eventually I did get into it and decided to go to Queensland to work as a jackaroo. (.) I came to Australia when I was 23 and after spending a year and a half on the farm and then working in Queensland I got to know the A to Z of the Aussie way of life, customs and everything to do with farming. Since I immersed myself in the new culture and isolated myself from the outside world I even started thinking like a local. Not only did I fit in, I have assimilated so much that now I am more of an Aussie than a Ukrainian. That was a fascinating stage of my life.
How did you get the idea of starting your own business?
- Once I had been to every farm in Queensland and learned all the tricks of the trade, I decided to return to Melbourne. That was around the time by brother Taras arrived and we got jobs at an Italian cheese-making farm. Here we had learned other important aspects of running a business, namely marketing, merchandising, product promotion, growing a clientele, people management and multitasking. We worked a lot and really hard, and we didn't receive any preferential treatment or favours. Not only were we learning about the business but also about the Australian mindset, and we searched for the right approach to take. It was a good school of hard knocks, a boot camp, so to speak. The knowledge and experience that we developed day by day helped us lay the foundation for opening our own production line. By happy coincidence we got a huge discount on plant equipment for our future factory and then spent a long time searching for a location. One day, we were in Mornington for lunch and saw an ad about a factory for sale. And that's how it started...
