Every year, one week is set aside to recognise Australia’s 2.6 million carers and this year, Carers Week will run from 15-21 October with activities planned all over Australia.
This year’s theme, Anyone, Anytime, acknowledges that people never know when they might find themselves in a caring role.
You or someone you know may be a carer who provides support to a family member or friend with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition or who is frail aged. Many people in these circumstances don’t think of themselves as ‘carers’ and consider this to be part of their normal family responsibilities.
There are services available to help carers with things like taking a break, medical assessments and referrals, nursing care in the home, dementia services, transport, day care and therapy centres.
