Emmeloord, 8 September 2009 – At the end of the first PotatoEurope 2009 congress day the PotatoEurope 2009 Innovation Award was handed out this evening to the company Restrain Company Ltd for its product titled Restrain Generator. This product has been chosen by a qualified jury out of 17 nominees. Mr Dirk Garos, Dutch representative of this company received this prestigious award from the hands of the Director-General for Enterprise and Innovation of the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs, Mrs Renée Bergkamp. This ceremony took place in the congresss venue ‘’t Voorhuys’ in the Dutch city of Emmeloord. The selection criteria based on which the jury came to their decision were innovativeness, inventiveness and market potential. In addition the jury has also judged the entries for their degree of sustainability.
The jury needed a long time today to carefully weigh the applications but in the end decided to proclaim Restrain Generator as the indisputable winner. Restrain Generator produces low levels of the natural ethylene gas to prevent potatoes from sprouting. Ethylene gives zero residue on the tuber. This product is the winner, according to the jury, because it truly is a breakthrough. It is very innovative and something the entire potato sector has waited for for many years. Mainly for countries that store their ware and seed potatoes for a long time a natural and environmentally friendly anti sprouting control is very necessary and welcome. The product was tested by the Dutch Board for the Autorisation of Plant Protection Products and Biocides. This institute has approved the use of ethylene as a safe means so it can also be used in biological potato growing. And last but not least, Restrain Generator has a comparable cost price compared to chemical anti sprouting control. In summary, it has a very positive influence on the export and processing of potatoes.
Given the high-quality of all applications, the jury did not only choose a winner but also rewarded a second and third place. The second prize is for the NAK, the Dutch General Inspection Service for agricultural seeds and seed potatoes for their Direct Tuber Testing (DTT).
This is a breakthrough in multiplex molecular testing of seed potatoes, with which results are available up to 6 weeks earlier compared to conventional tests. The reason for appointing DTT with the second prize is that it scores very high on the level of innovativeness as well as market potential. It is a very good tool for the competitive advantage of the seed potato sector. The rapid availability of reliable information offers trading companies excellent opportunities in the early export of seed potatoes.
The last company in the top three is Dacom B.V. with their Dacom Watersave® Sensor System. This is a unique advanced technology concept that optimizes crop production for food security and leads to potential savings of huge amounts of precious water. The Dacom Watersave Sensor Ssytem gains a well deserved third place, according to the jury, because it scores very high in terms of sustainability. The potential water savings are of course very important given the worldwide increasing scarcity of water.
The jury members who came to these conclusions were Mr Th.A.M. Meijer, chairman of the Main Board Arable Products from the Netherlands and chairman of this jury. The other members were Mr R. van Diepen, managing director of NAO (Dutch Potato Organisation), Mr J. Delleman, chief editor of Potato World Magazine and Mr J. Hak, chairman of the association of Dutch manufacturers of machinery for food processing and packaging as well as managing director of Hak & Partners B.V. The winning product as well as the numbers two and three and the other nominees are being on show until this Thursday, 20.00 hrs., during the PotatoEurope 2009 exhibtion, at the Urkerweg in Emmeloord, the Netherlands.

Emmeloord, 8 Septembre 2009 – À l'issue de la première journée de congrès de l’édition 2009 du concours PotatoEurope le Prix dInnovation de l’édition 2009 du concours PotatoEurope a été remis ce soir à l'entreprise Restrain Company Ltd pour son produit intitulé Restrain Generator. Ce produit a été choisi par un jury de 17 membres assignés experts en la matière. M. Dirk Garos, le représentant néerlandais de cette entreprise, a reçu ce prix prestigieux des mains du Directeur Général du secteur Entreprises et Innovation du Ministère Néerlandais des Affaires Économiques, Mme Renée Bergkamp. Cette cérémonie a eu lieu dans la salle des congrès “t Voorhuys” dans la ville néerlandaise d'Emmeloord. Les critères de sélection sur lesquels s'est basé le jury étaient l’innovation, l'inventivité et le potentiel commercial des produits. En outre, le jury a également tenu compte de leur degré de viabilité.
Le jury a eu besoin de beaucoup de temps aujourd'hui pour départager les candidatures avec le plus grand soin mais a finalement décidé de désigner Restrain Generator comme le vainqueur incontesté. Restrain Generator utilise de faibles quantités d'éthylène, un gaz naturel, pour empêcher la germination des pommes de terre. L’éthylène ne laisse aucun résidu sur le tubercule. Ce produit a été désigné comme grand gagnant par le jury, parce qu'il représente un véritable progrès. Ce procédé est très innovant, et représente une avancée attendue depuis des années dans le secteur de la pomme de terre. Un moyen de contrôler la germination de façon naturelle et respectueuse de l'environnement est à la fois nécessaire et bienvenu, particulièrement pour tous les pays qui stockent leurs semences de pomme de terre et leur récolte pendant de longues périodes. Le produit a été testé par le Conseil Néerlandais chargé de la régulation des produits phytopharmaceutiques et biocides. Cet institut a approuvé l'utilisation de l'éthylène comme étant sans danger, il peut par conséquent également être utilisé pour la culture de pommes de terre biologiques. Enfin et surtout Restrain Generator a un coût comparable à celui du contrôle chimique de la germination. En résumé, il présente de nombreux avantages pour l'exportation et le conditionnement des pommes de terre.
Étant donnée la grande qualité de toutes les candidatures, le jury n'a pas choisi qu'un seul gagnant, mais il en a récompensé aussi un deuxième et un troisième . Le deuxième prix est pour NAK, Le service d’Inspection Générale Néerlandais des semences agricoles et des semences de pommes de terre pour leur Direct Tuber Testing (DTT).
Il constitue une importante avancée dans les tests moléculaires multiplex réalisés sur les semences de pommes de terre, grâce à laquelle les résultats sont disponibles jusqu'à 6 semaines plus tôt qu'ils ne le sont avec les tests classiques. Le motif de la nomination du DTT pour le deuxième prix est qu'il constitue une innovation importante tout en présentant un grand potentiel commercial. C'est un très bon outil permettant au secteur de la semence de pomme de terre de gagner en compétitivité. De plus, l'obtention rapide d'informations fiables offre aux entreprises commerciales d'excellentes opportunités dans l'exportation précoce de semences pommes de terre .
La dernière entreprise dans le top trois est Dacom BV avec leur Dacom Watersave ® Sensor System. Il s'agit d'un concept unique de technologie de pointe qui optimise la production des cultures garantissant la sécurité alimentaire pour tous et conduit à des économies potentielles d'énormes quantités de cette précieuse ressource qu'est l'eau. Source text - English He came into the world like all the rest of them—like us, that is—as brown as an iguana and flecked with the detritus of afterbirth, no more remarkable than the date stamped on the morning newspaper, but when I cleared his throat and slapped his infant buttocks he didn’t make a sound. Quite the contrary. His eyes snapped open with that searching myopia of the newborn and he began to breathe, calmly and quietly, with none of the squalling or fuss of the others. My nurse, Elvira Fuentes, who had spent fifteen years working on the cancer ward at the hospital in Guadalajara before coming home to devote herself to me, both as a lover and a helpmate, frowned as I handed the infant to his mother. She was thinking exactly the same thing I was: there must have been some constriction or deformation of the child’s vocal apparatus. Or perhaps he’d been born without it.
We’d seen stranger things, all manner of defects and mutations, especially among the offspring of the migrant workers, what with the devil’s brew of herbicides, pesticides, and genetically engineered foodstuffs to which they’ve been routinely exposed. There was one man I won’t name here who came back from the cotton fields of Arizona looking like one of Elvira’s oncological ghosts, and whose wife gave birth nine months later to a monster without a face—no eyes, ears, mouth, or nose, just a web of translucent skin stretched tightly over a head the size of an avocado. Officially, we labelled it a stillbirth. The corpse—if you could call it that—was disposed of with the rest of the medical waste.
But that’s neither here nor there. What I mean to say is that we were wrong. Happily—at least, as it appeared.

L’infirmière qui me secondait, Elvira Fuentes, et qui avait passé quinze ans en cancérologie à l’hôpital de Guadalajara avant de rentrer au pays pour vivre à mes côtés, comme compagne et comme assistante, fronça les sourcils quand que je tendis le nourrisson à sa mère. Elle pensait exactement à la même chose que moi : l’appareil vocal de l’enfant devait présenter quelque atrophie ou autre malformation. Ou peut-être était-il né sans.
Nous avions vu des choses plus étranges que cela, en matière de défaillances et de mutations, plus particulièrement chez les enfants des travailleurs itinérants, probablement à cause de cet infernal cocktail d’herbicides, pesticides et organismes génétiquement modifiés auquel ils étaient quotidiennement exposés. Un homme dont je ne donnerai pas le nom, était revenu des champs de coton d’Arizona avec la même allure fantomatique que celle des patients d’Elvira en oncologie, et neuf mois plus tard sa femme donna naissance à un monstre sans visage – ni yeux, ni oreilles, ni bouche, ni nez – juste une toile de peau translucide enserrant fermement une tête de la taille d’un avocat. Officiellement, l’enfant fut considéré comme mort-né. On se débarrassa du cadavre – pour peu qu’on puisse le considérer comme tel – avec le reste des rebuts médicaux.
Mais je m’éloigne du sujet, ce que je veux dire est que nous nous trompions. Heureusement – ou du moins nous le crûmes, dans un premier temps.
