Source text - Spanish Cuando se reflexiona en lo que era nuestro país a la llegada de Cortés, sorprende la pluralidad de ciudades y culturas, que contrasta con la relativa homogeneidad de sus rasgos más característicos. La diversidad de los núcleos indígenas, y las rivalidades que los desgarraban, indica que Mesoamérica estaba constituida por un conjunto de pueblos, naciones y culturas autónomas, con tradiciones propias, exactamente como el Mediterráneo y otras áreas culturales. Por sí misma Mesoamérica era un mundo histórico.
Translation - English When considering what our country was when Cortés arrived, the plurality of cities and cultures is surprising compared with the relative homogeneity of its more characteristic features. The diversity of the metropolises of the indigenous peoples, and the rivalries which ravaged them, indicates that Mesoamerica comprised a conglomeration of autonomous towns, nations, and cultures, each with its own traditions, just like the Mediterranean and other culturally diverse areas. Mesoamerica was an historical world all its own.

Translation - English Now human society and unity are best served if one receives the highest measure of kindness when he is most united to his society. For the bond of society is reasoning and discourse, which, through teaching, learning, communicating, disputing, and judging, brings men together, and unites them in a sort of natural society; and in nothing are we further from the nature of the beasts, to whom we often attribute courage, while we do not say that justice, equity, and goodness are in horses and lions; for they have no share in reasoning and discourse.
