English to Catalan: Què implica la marxa de Dani Alves?
Source text - English Dani Alves has been linked with various clubs for several summers now. It's nothing new that the Brazilian full-back could leave Barcelona to end his career somewhere else. Yet, the rumours are becoming information and Alves decided to leave, according to Barça's sporting director Robert Fernández. The most recent and serious leads link the right-back with Italian champions Juventus and French champions PSG. According to the newspaper Sport, the deal with the former would have already been sealed, meaning the Brazilian would go to Italy this summer and not France.
However, nothing official has been communicated in terms of transfer by the club nor the player himself, which implies Dani Alves hasn't chosen still where he would go. In any case, the Blaugranas will have to face an issue regarding the right-back position. A golden opportunity for Aleix Vidal to establish himself in the starting eleven, but a much more difficult problem to solve from the club's point of view, which doesn't have any guarantees of Vidal's level given the half-season he had in 2016. Obviously, nothing is settled and various options are available for Luis Enrique and Barça.
Start Aleix Vidal
We learn by doing, and it is true that Aleix Vidal hasn't been able to do much at Barça in the past season. Firstly, because Barça were banned of the transfer market until the winter transfer window of 2016 and their two signees Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan could not play until the 1st of January of 2016. This is part of the explanation why Vidal, for his first ever season as a Blaugrana after a very succesful stay at Sevilla, wasn't performing as well as expected from a two-times Europa League winner.
Being in the shadow of Dani Alves should have been the perfect situation for Vidal to quietly improve, surrounded by some of the best players on the planet, while waiting for his moment to shine. Unfortunately for Barça and Luis Enrique, Aleix Vidal proved impatient and disappointed by his game time in the six months of professional football during which he was available. Lacking motivation, the Catalan right-back has let a performance drop and the comments of the press get the best of him. So much that his credibility as Dani Alves' successor is now in doubt. Aged 26 years, he still have time to reach the highest of his potential, but time isn't in his favour in a club like Barça that relentlessly chases trophies, year in and year out.
It is up to him to show he has what it takes to end the gossip and make sure the right-back position is in good shape. After 6 months of adaptation, highs and lows, he is probably more involved in Barça's culture on and off the pitch, a good advantage when having to play in this well-oiled machine that is FC Barcelona. His talent hasn't vanished and sooner rather than later, Vidal will prove it to the whole of football experts. Patience and trust are key.
Buy another right-back
Barcelona may not have as much money at their disposal as they once had, as seen during the winter transfer window when Nolito was supposed to come to Barça, but Dani Alves' exit means 5 million euros a year less to pay. Obviously, it would have been better to be able to sell the 33-year old for a respectable amount of money, but still, with his wage off the board, Barça could afford a promising right-back, in the case they find the Aleix Vidal option not viable enough.
But who to buy in that case? One of the hottest rumour was about Arsenal's young talent Hector Bellerín, who will take part in the Euro 2016, after Dani Carvajal had to withdraw because of his injury in the Champion's League final. A few problems come up about this transfer: first, Bellerín seems to be very happy in Arsenal, and in London, where his family now lives. Also, he signed a whole new contract recently that establishes him as an Arsenal player until June of 2019.
Another prospect is Marquinhos, although the right-back position is not his favourite. Nonetheless, his talent proved useful to PSG when Laurent Blanc had to face Serge Aurier's ban for insults towards him on Periscope. The main problem is economic, as PSG would not let go of the Brazilian wonder kid below 40 million euros. Robert Fernández, who announced today Alves' leaving, defused the rumour: "I haven't talked to the player nor to the club", he said.
The same goes for Everton's John Stones, who is a centre-back, and Valencia's Mustafi, who was linked at some point with the Catalan club. Alves's departure will probably accelerate the process if Barça decided to replace him with a brand new signing.
Make Sergi Roberto a right-back
This probably wouldn't be a problem for the young Blaugrana player, as he proved capable of playing at virtually any position on the pitch. Sergi Roberto had a blast this season, and played the role of the Swiss knife to overcome the squad's injuries and unavailabilities. And he did it well, Luis Enrique being very satisfied with his performance all along the season. Making him a full time right-back seems like a temporary solution though, to set back even further the moment to make a decision as for Dani Alves' succession.
And even though he executed Luis Enrique's orders perfectly and behaved as an ideal teammate last season, there is no guarantee Sergi Roberto would blossom as a right-back, he who is originally a central midfielder. There is still time to figure it out and sound out the player to see if he would maybe be up for it. That way, Barça could think of a better alternative with the assurance of a strong back-up, between Aleix Vidal and Sergi Roberto.
There is no doubt Barça's people in charge of transfers are thinking about these options, and are evaluating the best one to go for. Whether it is Aleix Vidal's opportunity to become the next big right-back in Europe, Sergi Roberto's decision to cope with the right-back position and offer Barça some stability while waiting for a new chance to sign an ace, or if the Blaugranas decide to get at it right away and sign a promising talent on the right side of the defence, to make sure the team is ready for next season. Time will tell.
Translation - Catalan Fa molts estius que Dani Alves està vinculat a diversos equips.
Oportunitat d'or per a Aleix Vidal
English to Catalan: VINTAGE.
Source text - English It is a dream still. Winning the Champions League twice in a row, no team has ever done it before. We thought Luis Enrique's Barça might be the first to do so, as they were dominating La Liga and Europe this year again. Yet, an obstacle named Atlético decided otherwise. The Blaugranas won't be able to fulfill this fantasy that has been going on for over 20 years now (23 to be specific), a performance that seems undoable at this stage. Surely, if we take the Europa League, it is a different story. Sevilla, still in the race for a third consecutive title, doesn't have that kind of problems. But the Champions League is another galaxy, and last night was proof. No matter how superior you're supposed to be, there is always an unknown, some imponderables in the air that you can't control. Football has evolved, Europe has evolved and the Champions League as well. So much that since Van Basten's AC Milan, no one ever could win twice in a row. Here is a reminder of what being on top of European football. Let's go back 23 years ago, and even more.
1989-90: the time when Milan stayed on the European throne
As stated above, the dawn of 1990's football was another time, when shorts were shorter and style less of a preocupation when entering the pitch. A completely different experience for any football fan, and probably an incomparable one as well. Different era, different format, and different name for the competition. At the time, the 'C1' was called European Clubs Champions' Cup, a name that now seems to have been completely overshadowed by current Champions League. Still, winning it was nothing short of a great performance, even though there were fewer games than now.
Indeed, the competition was organised as one final phase, without a previous group stage. Teams could play just two games and get knocked out of the party. Other specificity of that format: only the clubs champions in their country could qualify for the Clubs Champions' Cup, which means that there was only one club by country and fewer chances to participate. Being in this competition meant shining on the national stage as well. The only exception was for the league of the winner of the previous edition, just like it was the case for AC Milan and Italy, as Arrigo Sacchi's team were the defending champion, alongside Inter who were Italian Champions in 1989, Milan ending the Serie A at the 3rd place only. To achieve their third European title, Sacchi's boys had beaten Bulgarians of Vitosha (7-2 on aggragate), Red Star Belgrade (2-2 o.a, 4-2 on penalties), Werder Bremen (1-0 o.a), Real Madrid (6-1 o.a) and Steaua in the final, 4-0, thanks to doubles from Dutch legends Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten. The legend was on track.
SACCHI'S MASTERPIECE WITH THE ROSSONERI
In the summer of 1989, AC Milan were considered rightfully as the best team in Europe. Just going through the names, we can today have a small feel of what it was to see this squad evolve: Galli, Costacurta, Maldini, Baresi, Tassotti, Gullit, Rijkaard, Ancelotti, Donadoni, Van Basten... Players among the best in Europe, and in the World. Alongside 1989 Ballon d'Or Marco van Basten, Milan won the UEFA Super Cup and the Clubs' World Cup in 1989, a stunning performance that was far from being over.
Defending champions of this ECC (European Clubs Champions' Cup) didn't have an easy run towards back-to-back title. After quietly dispose of Finland's champions Helsinki (4-0, 1-0), Milan had to face an old acquaintance, Real Madrid. That time, the draw was much tighter. But Sacchi's men still manage to beat the Merengues (led by Emilio Butragueño and Welsh coach John Toshack), thanks to a home win 2-0 and despite the second leg loss at the Bernabéu (0-1). On to the quarter-finals.
A few years after the Heysel tragedy, another Italian giant was coming to the stadium, this time not in final but in quarter-finals, to defy the local club of KV Mechelen. Another hard battle of 180 minutes that led to extra-time, as the score was still 0-0 at the end of the second leg. Van Basten (again) and Marco Simone forced fate and sent Milan into the semis, against Bayern Munich. The clash between those two top European clubs didn't disappoint. Intensity, uncertainty, a huge tactical fight that Sacchi's ended up winning, in the extra-time once again. The win 1-0 at San Siro in the first leg wasn't enough, and the German leveled the score on aggregate in the second leg in the Olympic Stadium of Munich (1-0). In the extra-time, it was a different story and Bergonovo gave Milan the crucial goal away, worth double, that would eventually lead Milan to another final, despite McInally's goal for Munich (2-1, 2-2 o.a, Milan wins on away goals). Just a few step away from making the double.
23RD OF MAY 1990: THE DUTCH CONNECTION SILENCES THE PORTUGUESE EAGLE
Benfica's moment of glory corresponds still to this day to Eusebio's presence, and 2 European titles in 1961 and 1962. But throughout their history, the Portuguese have always been tough opponents to beat. 1989-90's team was no exception. Led by Sven-Goran Eriksson, the Lisbon side had taken on Derry City FC, Budapest Honved, Dniepropetrovsk and Olympique de Marseille to get to Vienna. Nothing to impressive, but still a great run for the Portuguese champions, especially two years after their final lost against PSV in 1988 (0-0, 5-6 on penalties).
Milan's back 3 had to stay focused against Benfica's energetic game but they hold on. 0-0 at half-time and a pretty balance duel overall. Valdo, Pacheco and Magnusson tried their best to get a goal but it wasn't enough and as it oftened happend back then, one of Milan's great stars punished the opponent and offered the win. In this specific case, it was Frank Rijkaard, who had just joined the year before. Nothing more was scored and Milan could enjoy another sip of European greatness. They were the last ones to make this incredible back-to-back. But not the only ones.
They also did it:
Real Madrid (1955-56, 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1959-60)
Benfica (1960-61, 1961-62)
Internazionale (1963-64, 1964-65)
Ajax Amsterdam (1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, with Johan Cruyff)
Bayern Munich (1973-74, 1974-75, 1975-76)
Liverpool (1976-77, 1977-78)
Nottingham Forest (1978-79, 1979-80)
Another era, another football, but still a tremendous achievement that still hasn't found its author in 21st century's football. It won't be FC Barcelona, even though it might still be in the future, as the Blaugranas dominated Europe since 2006 and their 2nd title, with three more in 2009, 2011 and 2015. Probably the best candidate nowadays.
Translation - Catalan Encara és un somni.
Cap a quarts.
Real Madrid (1955-56, 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1959-60)
Benfica (1960-61, 1961-62)
Internazionale (1963-64, 1964-65)
Ajax d'Amsterdam (1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, amb Johan Cruyff)
Bayern Munic (1973-74, 1974-75, 1975-76)
Liverpool (1976-77, 1977-78)
Nottingham Forest (1978-79, 1979-80)
English to Catalan: Eleccions a la FIFA. El perfil dels candidats General field: Other Detailed field: Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Source text - English In comparison to this, House of Cards is a poor attempt at depicting politics, scandals, tricks and low blows. This is FIFA, the highest institution in world football that suffered an immense earthquake as various cases of corruption were discovered by American justice, which has been chasing ever since all the responsibles. Tomorrow, FIFA gets a new president. Someone to build new foundations and avoid more public embarrassment. Michel Platini, who claimed his wish to be a candidate, was punished with a 8-year ban (reduced to 6-year after the appeal). He had withdrawn his candidacy in the meantime. On Tuesday, Prince Ali, another of the candidates, requested that the election was postponed to avoid an "unfair" vote, due to pressures on the voters and a voting system not quite transparent. It hasn't even started yet and it is already very messy. It is all the irony of an election supposed to bring back calm, peace and justice to the world of football. There are many doubts about that idea being true, and many suspicions as for the candidates' true interests, but here are the candidates in question and their proposals:
Gianni Infantino - 45 years old - Favourite after all
He is one of the most famous faces of UEFA, the one we see at each Champion's League and Europa League draw. Yet, no one really knows what his true role his, nor what his job consists of. Officially he is the UEFA General Secretary, and the favourite in the race for the FIFA throne.
HIS IDEAS:
- Increase part of football development in budget to 50%
- Expand the World Cup to 40 countries
- Series of measures to avoid long-term presidency mandates and bring more transparency
Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa - 50 years old - The Bookmakers' choice
He is the Vice-President of FIFA and president of the AFC (Asian Football Confederation). Very discreet in the media, he's very influent backstage. Although he's alleged to have helped arresting and torturing protesting dissidents in Bahrain, his integrity has been stated by FIFA.
HIS IDEAS:
- Separate FIFA in two groups: "Business FIFA" and "Football FIFA"
- Play games in a 60-minute format with time stopping during dead balls to avoid time wasting
Tokyo Sexwale - 62 years old - A inspiring background
His name might make you smile, but his story surely not. He was imprisoned on Robben Island alongside Nelson Mandela for 13 years. Since, he's been highly regarded in FIFA. His charisma and successful business career make him a serious candidate
HIS IDEAS:
- Put sponsors on National teams shirts to help raising money for football
- Open the World Cup to more countries, especially in Africa
Jérôme Champagne - 57 years old - Experienced and diplomat
After Platini was forced to withdraw his candidacy, Jérôme Champagne was the only French candidate left to try and get to the top of the world football ladder. Former diplomat, he worked under Blatter's presidency, which might enable him to change completely the system, or, on the other hand, keep corrupting it...
HIS IDEAS:
- Against the extension of World Cup to more countries
- Give seats to Executive Committee to FIFPro, leagues and clubs representatives
- Introduce global collective bargaining for all professional footballers
Prince Ali bin AlHussein - 40 years old - On a mission for transparency
It is his main selling point: transparency. Like most of football fans, Prince Ali from Jordania is sick and tired of all the puppetry and mind games in the biggest football institution. His relative youth and his results in the last elections that he lost to Blatter make of the Jordan Football Association a very serious candidate as well.
HIS IDEAS:
- Bring full transparency to FIFA
- Publish the Garcia Report (about corruption inside of World Football Associations)
Tokyo Sexwale - 62 anys - Un rerefons inspirador
Jérôme Champagne - 57 anys - Expert i diplomàtic
