Source text - English On his head he wore a plain vizorless helmet without a crest or symbol. From neck to mid-thigh he was protected by a close-fitting shirt of black chain mail. The kilt he wore below his armor and which reached to his knees, was of plain drab material. His legs were wrapped with hard leather that might turn a sword edge, and the shoes on his feet were worn with much traveling.
A broad belt encircled his lean waist, holding a long dirk in a leather sheath. On his left arm he carried a small round shield of hide-covered wood, hard as iron, braced and reinforced with steel, and having a short, heavy spike in the center. An ax hung from his right wrist … The weapon with its three-foot handle and graceful lines looked slim and light when the fisherman mentally compared it to the great axes carried by the Norsemen. Yet scarcely three years had passed … since such axes as these had shattered the northern hosts into red defeat and broken the pagan power forever.
Translation - Catalan Al cap portava un senzill casc sense visera, desprovist de cap plomall o símbol. Des del coll fins a mitja cama estava protegit per una apretada cota de malla negra. El kilt de teixit bast que duia sota l'armadura li queia fins els genolls. Les seves cames eren embolicades amb tires de pell prou endurida per a desviar el tall d'una espasa i el calçat dels seus peus estava desgastat per molts viatges.
Un cinturó ample envoltava la seva magra cintura i hi sostenia un punyal llarg en una funda de cuir. El seu braç esquerre carregava un petit escut circular de fusta envoltada de pell, dur com ferro, encerclat i reforçat amb acer i amb un pintxo curt i sòlid al centre. Una destral penjava del seu canell dret... L'arma, d'un metre de llarg i línies fines, semblava delicada i lleugera quan el pescador la comparava mentalment amb les grans destrals de combat que esgrimien els Nòrdics. Però tot i això, encara no havien passat tres anys... des que destrals com aquesta havien enfonsat les hosts del Nord en una desfeta sagnant i havien trencat el domini pagà per sempre més.
