Make friends, not enemies. As we discussed earlier, sometimes not everyone at work will like you, for reasons that are beyond your control-but that doesn’t mean you have to encourage it. Watching out for “number one” does not mean acting like a b*tch! Go-Getter Girls are self-aware and strategic, not selfish, spiteful, or sneaky. Be pleasant, generous, cheerful, classy, and collegial. Offer to help people. Get involved in department committees or your company’s work-life balance or affinity groups. Attend happy hours. Participate in office outings.
Remember: all people need a little attention, respect, and care. And one of the best ways to minimize cattiness is to let people see your (obviously) cool, down-to-earth personality and hear about what’s going on in your world. It’s important to be (and be seen as) part of the team-not snobby or aloof! Plus, talking with colleagues in a more quasi-social setting is a good way to gather information about office dynamics and power players and to get a heads-up on opportunities or projects that are coming down the pipeline.
