French to English: Coviabilité General field: Science Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Translation - English When I wrote the postscript of this book, which examines one of the greatest challenges in human history, I thought of the relationship of science to the process of societies’ development. This book invites experts from many disciplines to look for new possibilities, theoretical and methodological, in order to understand the history of the relationship between societies and the nature. The concept of co-viability emerges as a next leitmotif associated with the relationship between these systems, human and non-human. As shown by the authors of this book, the principle of co-viability originated from Jean-Pierre Aubin’s (2011) and Paul Bourgine’s (1996) works. Analysis and case studies paved the way for new perspectives of interpretation of global changes and their impacts on local territories.
The texts introduce works based on the paradigm of the co-viability which aims at exceeding the principle or the ideology of sustainable development, both in the areas of research and those of politics and management. Therefore, this book calls, in this context, upon understanding the relationship of nature vs. society as a human process in the context of the biosphere, i.e. links of interactions and interdependencies between social and ecological systems.
Analysis of societies’ trajectory over the past centuries have shown us the inadequacy between the dynamics of capital accumulation (socio-political and economic) and the ecological dynamics, with catastrophic effects on the biosphere. The risks caused by global climate changes are high. The history of humanity is built through the relationship between society and nature, of course according to nature domination logics, basing on various processes of production and knowledge. These logics were not always contradictory, as shown by the examples of people who have a notion of culture and nature into their systems of knowledge (Descola, 2005), through many researches in the world.
Today, it is recognized that we are facing threats and risks which have a direct impact on the fate of humanity and the planet, beyond the limits of the balance between humans and the non-humans. This process appears as irreversible and altering the ecological system into a new state, with very limited possibilities to return to the previous conditions (Steffen et al., 2007; Rockstrom 2009), as described in the introduction to this book.
