Gene transfer to cultivated genotypes
Cotton is normally considered to be a self-pollinating crop, although natural outcrossing may range from zero to more than 50% (Niles and Feaster, 1984). The cotton floral structure provides direct contact of the anthers with the stigma. Since pollen shed occurs when the stigma is receptive, self-pollination takes place readily during a few hours (from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m.) of the single day of anthesis, and self-fertilisation follows (Llewellyn and Fitt, 1996). To effect cross-pollination, foreign pollen must successfully compete with the 35,000 pollen grains produced by the average cotton flower (Vaissière, 1990). Cotton pollen is not transferred by wind due to its large, heavy and sticky nature (Niles and Feaster, 1984). Natural cross-pollination results from pollen being carried by insects, bees being the most important cotton pollinators (McGregor, 1976). Populations of pollen-carrying insects are influenced by proximity of other vegetation, climate, and amount of insecticide spraying in the vicinity. Insecticide applications keep pollinator populations at very low levels.

Overview
The Test Injection Bolus Timing application analyzes time dependent processes, in particular the uptake and dispersion of contrast material with relation to time. Information measured via the application is then used to help identify the delay time and amount of contrast to inject for a clinical scan.
When using a test injection the vessel or organ of interest is scanned with the use of contrast. An axial scan over the area of interest is performed with a cycle time based on the expected rate of enhancement change.
The scan images are then loaded into the Test Injection Bolus Timing application.
ROIs are drawn over the regions whose changes are to be measured. The average pixel values of the ROIs are plotted over time for a graphical description of the time variations.
Procedure summary
The Test Injection Bolus Timing application procedure consists of the following steps:
Inject contrast.
Scan the region of interest in an axial scan with contrast. Set the cycle time of the scan according to the expected contrast movement.
Open the scan series in the Test Injection Bolus Timing application.
Draw ROIs and check the results. Manipulate the ROI's until the scan delay and amount of contrast material can be determined.
These results are then used to set the injection delay and amount of contrast to use in the clinical scan.

Evolution de la technologie Jacquard
C’est de Chine que sont venus les premiers métiers à tisser à la tire. Les fils de chaîne sont tirés en position haute par des tireurs de lacs d’où le nom de “procédé à la tire”.
Au XVe siècle, le procédé est importé en France pour le tissage des étoffes de soie.
Au fil des décennies, plusieurs inventeurs perfectionneront le métier à la tire.

1605 - Développement de Dangon (métier à grande tire) ;
1725 - Métier Bouchon avec sys-tème de papier troué et aiguille ;
1728 - Métier Falcon avec carton perforé triangulaire ;
1745 - Métier de Vaucanson utilisant un tambour perforé sélectionnant des crochets liés aux arcades.
Vaucanson a inventé le principe fondamental de la machine à façonner dite à la Jacquard. En 1805, Jean-Marie Jacquard a l’idée de remplacer le lourd tambour de Vaucanson par des cartons perforés placés sur un cylindre. En 1815, Breton dépose un brevet de perfectionnement qui marque la naissance de la machine Jacquard capable de tisser.
Prévue pour les tissus façonnés en soie, l’utilisation de la machine Jacquard s’étend progressivement aux tissus façonnés en lin et coton, ainsi qu’à la fabrication des tapisseries et des tapis.
Vers la fin du XIXe siècle, le principe Jacquard est adopté par la bonneterie, la passementerie et la rubanerie.

MİMAR SİNAN
SELİMİYE CAMİİ
Klasik dönem Osmanlı mimarisinin baş eseri kabul edilen Selimiye, Mimar Sinan’ın sanatını, dehasını ve teknik birikimini tümüyle sergilediği bir doruk noktasıdır.
Sinan’ın 80 yaşında tamamladığı ve ustalık eserim dediği Selimiye Camiinin, dış görünüş ve iç mekanında vurgulanan temel düşünce; merkezilik kavramıdır.
Kente egemen konumdaki bir düzlük üzerinde duvarlarla çevrili bir avlunun içinde yer alır. Cami yaklaşık 40 metre boyunda ve 60 metre eninde dikdörtgen planlı bir ibadet mekanıyla, hemen hemen aynı ölçülerde bir şadırvan avlusundan oluşur.
Kütle kompozisyonunda yukarıya doğru çıkıldıkça kendini belli eden sekizgen gövde, devasa bir kubbe ile adeta taçlandırılmaktadır. Eşit aralıklarla dört köşeye yerleştirilen minareler, merkezi harekete güç katmaktadır.
Bir migferi andıran muhteşem kubbesiyle ağırlık kuleleri, yapının çok uzaklardan bile fark edilen plastik etkisini artırır.
Selimiye camii, 31m. 22cm. çapında muhteşem bir kubbe ile örtülüdür. Bu kubbeyi sekiz fil ayağı taşır. Camide sağlanan iç mekan bütünlüğü, Osmanlı mimarisinin ulaştığı en uç noktayı oluşturur. Mekanı kuşatan tek büyük kubbe, bu bütünlük duygusunu büsbütün vurgulamaktadır.
Mimar Sinan Selimiye’de, Anadolu Selçuklu ve erken dönem Osmanlı camilerinde görülen bir geleneği sürdürür. Kubbeli ana hacmin ortasına müezzin mahfili ve küçük bir şadırvan yerleştirerek muazzam kubbenin yarattığı merkezi mekan duygusunu daha da güçlü biçimde vurgulamıştır.
Sinan, kubbenin göbeğinden geçen dikey ekseni belirleyecek bir düzenleme ile yer gök eksenini somutlaştırmıştır.
Edirne Selimiye camiinin iç süslemeleri de mimariyle uyum bakımından benzer bir nitelik taşır. Özellikle de camiiin dantela gibi işlenmiş minberi ve ak mermerden mihrabı ince bir zevkin ve sanat gücünün en alımlı örnekleridir.
Büyük kubbenin dört bir tarafında ve ona yakın bulunan minareler caminin dikeylik hissini artırır. Minarelerde Sinan’a özgü çubuklu gövde uygulamasına gidilerek olduklarından daha yüksek bir görüntü elde edilmiştir.
Yükseklikleri 71 metreyi bulan dört minarenin şerefelerine birbiri içinde kıvrılarak yükselen üç ayrı merdivenden çıkılır.
Şadırvan avlusu dört taraftan revaklarla çevrilidir ve ortasında 16 köşeli, üzeri açık ve avluya ölçü ve zerafet katan bir şadırvan bulunmaktadır.
Sinan, Selimiye külliyesinin diğer yapılarını sayıca az, boyut olarak küçük tutarak camiin tüm ihtişamıyla öne çıkmasını sağlamıştır.
Selimiye Camii, özelde Sinan’ın, genelde Osmanlı Türk Mimarisinin ulaştığı doruk noktasıdır.
Mimar Sinan’ın sanat gücünü yansıtan eserleri sadece Selatin camileri ile sınırlı kalmaz. Selimiye’de ortaya koyduğu mimari ve teknik bütünlük, Rüstem Paşa gibi yapılarda gizlidir.
Burada uyguladığı sekizgen kasnaklı kubbe tasarımı ve topografik yerleşim, Selimiye için bir ön hazırlık mahiyetindedir.
Bir ışık ve renk ustası olan Sinan, mimari bütünlükle estetik güzelliğin ayrıntılarını buluşturarak, ne kadar çok yönlü bir sanatçı olduğunu her eserinde farklı bir biçimde ortaya koymuştur.
Selimiye’nin bütüncül sadeliği yanında Rüstem Paşa’da Türk çini sanatının en incelikli örneklerini sergilemiştir. Bir çini galerisini andıran camiin minberi ve mihrabındaki süslemeler ve harmoni göz kamaştırıcıdır.
Selimiyeyi anlamak için, Sinan’ın sanat ve güzellik anlayışının değişik boyutlarını yansıttığı eserlerinin tümüne bakmak gerekir.

SINAN, THE ARCHITECT
SELIMIYE MOSQUE
Selimiye, the master work of classical Ottoman architecture, constitutes the artistic summit of Sinan the Architect; where his art, intelligence and technical knowledge are all exhibited.
The concept of central plan structure reveals to be the principal idea emphasized in the outside appearance and the inside of Selimiye Mosque, regarded by Sinan as his masterpiece which he completed in his eighties.
Situated on a high plain overseeing the city, the mosque is located in an outer courtyard surrounded by walls. It is composed of a rectangular planned prayer hall with 40 m length and 60 m width and an inner courtyard with nearly equal dimensions, containing an ablution fountain.
The octagonal body which reveals itself in a mass composition soaring up to the sky is -as though- crowned by a colossal dome. The presence of four minarets placed on the four corners, strengthens the central structure of the mosque.
Along with its magnificent dome resembling a helmet, weight towers increase the plastic effect of the building which can be noticed from a long distance.
Selimiye Mosque is encompassed by a marvelous dome which has a diameter of 31 m 22 cm. The thrust of the dome is carried by eight piers. The integrity displayed inside the mosque places Selimiye at the peak of Ottoman architecture. The single huge dome surrounding the complex emphasizes this integrated whole.
Sinan the Architect carried on a tradition seen in the mosques of Anatolian Seljuk and early Ottoman periods. By placing the muezzin’s platform and a small ablution fountain at the center of the domed main hall he ingeniously stressed on the sense of centralization created by the huge dome.
Sinan concretized the axis of sky and ground by means of an arrangement determining a virtual vertical axis passing through the center of the dome.
The inner decorations of Selimiye Mosque located in Edirne, has a similar characteristic for the harmony between these decorations and the architecture itself. Especially the altar which is decorated as elegantly as a lacework and the niche made of onyx marble are among the most remarkable examples of a delicate taste and talent of art.
The minarets placed on all 4 sides of the dome at a close distance strengthen the sense of verticality of the mosque. The grooved moulds on the bodies of the minarets emphasize the vertical line of the bodies; enabling them to look higher then they actually are; a method peculiar to Sinan…
The balconies of the 71m high minarets are reached through three separate spiral staircases ascending in each other.
The inner courtyard is surrounded by porticos on all four sides and contains a 16-cornered, open-top ablution fountain which contributes to the equilibrium and elegance of the courtyard.
In order not to overshadow the splendor of the mosque, Sinan constructed the other structures of the complex smaller in dimension and fewer in number.
The Mosque of Selimiye constitutes the highest point reached by Sinan in particular, and by Ottoman Turkish architecture in general.
The works of Sinan reflecting his artistic genius is not only limited by mosques built by sultans. The architectural and technical integrity displayed in Selimiye is hidden in other structures like Rüstem Pasha.
The design of the dome with octagonal supporting system and the topographic positioning used in Rüstem Pasha had the characteristics of a preparation for Selimiye.
Sinan, a master of light and color, displayed his multifunctional artistic character in a different way in each his work by combining the architectural integrity with the details of esthetic beauty.
Unlike the integral simplicity of Selimiye, he exhibited the finest examples of Turkish tile-making in Rüstem Pasha. The ornaments and the harmony on the altar and the niche of the mosque, which resemble a tile gallery, are quite impressive.
In order to understand Selimiye, an examination should be carried out on Sinan’s all works in which he reflects different dimensions of his understanding of art and beauty.
This wealth of art and spirit which reaches the summit in the appearance of Selimiye Mosque; is veiled under Sinan’s life of almost 100 years and its reflections on three continents...
