Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

Fra tidenes begynnelse har derfor menneskene forsøkt å glede seg over erotikken, men samtidig søkt å unngå å bli ødelagt av den. Man kan definere samfunn og religioner på bakgrunn av hvordan de forholder seg til dette paradokset. Polygami, monogami med sanksjoner, monogami med forhold på si', monogami med prostituerte, seriemonogami. For ikke å snakke om alle de fantasifulle og desperate individuelle løsningene som er blitt prøvd ut: Victor Hugo fikk en dør innsatt i kontorveggen, der kvinner kunne komme inn hver ettermiddag. Auden hadde et talent for å finne eskortegutter i enhver by. Picasso nektet blankt da både kone og elskerinne forlangte at han måtte velge mellom dem. I tillegg til dette kan man naturligvis velge asketisk selvpining. Men det man kanskje bør minne seg selv om, når man våkner opp til et liv med ferske malingsflekker og innfløkte forviklinger, er at erotikken ikke ble funnet opp for din skyld, og heller ikke bare for vår art skal overleve, den ble skapt til gudenes forlystelse. Det finnes ingenting som gir så mange muligheter til begeistring og skadefryd som erotikk. Og dette er direkte årsak til at den er tema for så mange fortellinger. Å som gudene trengte seg sammen på himmelens balkonger for å se følgene av den skjønne Helenas svik! Og vennene dine følger også med. Dine eskapader har livet opp mang en nattlig samtale.
I grenselandet mellom myte og historie var Odysseus, som overlevde ved hjelp av egen sluhet, den aller første som lærte seg å lure gudene. George Harrison era il mediano dei Beatles. Mediano geniale (non ci avrebbe regalato Something e Here Comes the Sun). Ma, comunque, un mediano. La mezzala era Paul McCartney. L’ala sinistra, senza dubbio, John Lennon. E con due così là davanti, i Fab Four potevano permettersi di tenere in squadra anche Ringo Starr, il Gamarra della situazione.
Il ragionamento, se ci pensate, si può estendere a famiglie, uffici, coppie, redazioni, associazioni e circoli ricreativi.
...Dimenticavo: ci sono quelli nati per fare gli arbitri. Ne conosciamo tutti: ogni volta che sorge una discussione, sentiamo nelle orecchie il loro antipatico fischietto. Non è una faccenda acustica, naturalmente. Il fischio può diventare un’occhiata, un silenzio, una smorfia, una particolare inclinazione della testa. L’uomo-nato-arbitro – o la donna: questa è una categoria dove molte femmine arrivano a livelli d’eccellenza – vuole decidere, stabilire, pacificare, mettere d’accordo. Anzi: dirimere. Il motto dell’arbitro per vocazione è: «Io dirimo».
Per dirimere – un’attività che gli procura un piacere quasi fisico – l’arbitro sceglie toni concilianti, oppure parole dure: dipende dalla sua personalità, e da come s’è svegliato quel mattino. Poi assegna punizioni (dirette, indirette), richiami, ammonizioni, occasionali espulsioni (in seguito si riunisce con la sua coscienza e stabilisce le giornate di squalifica).
Non c’è ufficio, compagnia, associazione o famiglia che non sia dotata di un arbitro. Talvolta è la persona più saggia, spesso la più impicciona. Nessuno le ha chiesto niente. Ma lei accorre, saltellando attraverso il campo della nostra vita. Ho litigato col mio fidanzato-portiere; di che t’impicci?, ragiona la ragazza-ala sinistra. Ma lui, l’arbitro, arriva con la faccetta compunta e la soluzione pronta. E magari il fidanzato viene cacciato, quando sarebbe stato sufficiente un richiamo verbale.
E i guardalinee, direte voi? Certo, ci sono anche loro. Aiutano l’arbitro a prendere le decisioni nella vita degli altri. Il tipico guardalinee si sente realizzato quando segnala un fuorigioco sospetto. Per esempio: voi siete a cena per lavoro con una bella collega, lui vi vede, riferisce al direttore di gara – non chiedete quale gara, lo sa lui – il quale, alla prima occasione, ne parla a vostra moglie, che non capisce e non gradisce (talvolta, le due cose insieme).

Admittedly, this love of language doesn't always give you shivers of joy while labouring with difficult texts, but it's love that keeps you going, through the night to get things right before a deadline.
I have been a cultural commuter for most of my adult life, and belive I have developed an acute cultural sensitivity that helps me understand and translate the meaning behind the words.
The love of language has also brought me to language teaching, and I teach Norwegian to small groups and to individuals.
I have grown to become reasonably bilingual Norwegian- English, however with a distinct self identity as Norwegian. Italian, acquired as an adult, is the language in which I learned to appreciate art and architecture.
My translation experience started in 1994 while finishing my Masters thesis, and has been either a side activity, or main work activity for all the years to follow. I've worked on translation projects for Telenor (No), Utviklingssenteret (No), the municipality of Prato, (It), Teatro della Limonaia (It), as well as for a vast number of agencies world-wide.
Other relevant work experiences include:
Experience as English teacher in Taiwan and Norway, project leader EU projects, translation and interpretation to/form Italian, Research fellow in sociology, and evaluator.
I participated in, and won a EU-tender for translations in genereal fields/public administration for the period June 27/2011 - June 26/2012
Since 2001 I've been self-employed, fr the most part enjoying the flexibility, as well as the opportunity it gives me to choose my own projects.
In 2004 I moved (following my husband), from Tuscany to Toronto- where I use the multicultural environment as stimulus for further linguistic growth.
