From his prone position on the burgundy leather couch, Doctor Thurmond's office is pretty much what Casper expects: tasteful gray Berber carpeting, a large mahogany roll-top desk, and brass wall sconces spilling soft puddles of light. What he didn't expect is a plastic contraption on the floor that looks like an abandoned colon, a white tuft of fur protruding from one of its tubes.
"Ah, I see you've spotted Sigmund," the doctor says from a chair by the corner of his desk. "He's a Snow Gerbil I rescued from a research lab in Reykjavik. They are indigenous to Iceland, and his species is nearly extinct. Do you have a pet, Mr. Helfin?"
"No," Casper replies, deciding not to mention Boots, a common alley cat, because she now belongs to his ex-wife.
"A pity," the doctor says, shaking his head as he opens a notebook. "To your problem, then. Tell me why is it that a man like you cannot communicate with the opposite sex?"
Casper is having difficulty hearing, because an overstuffed carnivorous pillow threatens to consume his head. He wrestles it from behind his head and tosses it on the floor. "For some reason, my brain goes into lockdown, Doctor."
"Are you lonely?"
"Sometimes," he says, doubting the doctor can really relate to an empty apartment, a microwaved frozen dinner, and a TV that's always on to beat back the silence.
"Do you realize, Mr. Helfin, that at thirty-two you are in the prime of your sexual life? Like a stud bull, you should be exhausted from boinking cows all day." He looks Casper over and shrugs. "But then, I suppose you'd be more attractive if..."
"If what, doctor?" asks Casper as he fingers the hump on his nose.
He waves a hand. "It is of no consequence," he says, then scans a page in the notebook. "So, I see you have been to Toastmasters, were hypnotized, and used crib sheets." The doctor chuckles. "And you actually tried standing behind a woman in order to communicate. A bit desperate, eh? Do you find the opposite sex unattractive, Mr. Helfin?"
"No. Of course not."
"In a gymnasium, have you ever checked out the equipment of another man? Say, in the showers?"
"Well--maybe once. It was impossible not to notice the size of this guy's--"

Certo non si aspettava quello strano marchingegno in plastica, lì sul pavimento, simile a un colon derelitto, da uno dei cui tubi protrude un glomerulo di pelliccia bianca.
“Ah, vedo che ha localizzato Sigmund” dice il dottore dalla sua sedia accanto allo spigolo dello scrittoio “É un gerbillo delle nevi che ho tratto in salvo da un laboratorio, a Reykjavik. Sono originari dell'Islanda, ma la specie è quasi estinta. Lei, signor Helfin, possiede un animale da compagnia?”
“No” risponde Casper, che decide di non nominare Boots-il-gatto, visto che l'ex-randagio ormai appartiene alla sua ex-moglie.
“Peccato”. Il dottore scuote la testa aprendo il block-note. “Torniamo al suo problema, allora. Mi dica, come mai un uomo come lei non riesce a comunicare con l'altro sesso?”
Un cuscino carnivoro iper-imbottito sta causando a Casper notevoli impedimenti uditivi, nel contempo attuando tentativi di fagocitarne il capo. Dopo una breve ma intensa lotta lui riesce a estrarlo e buttarlo sul pavimento, prima di rispondere:
“Non so, sembra che il cervello mi vada in stand-by”.
“Soffre di solitudine?”
“A volte”, risponde, dicendosi che difficilmente il dottore intende riferirsi ad un appartamento vuoto, una cena riscaldata al micro-onde, la TV perennemente accesa per tenere a bada il silenzio.
“Si rende conto, Mr Helfin, che a trentadue anni lei è nel pieno del suo vigore sessuale? Dovrebbe essere esausto come un toro dopo una giornata passata a montare vacche.” Gli dà un'occhiata generale, e scrolla leggermente le spalle. “D'altra parte, risulterebbe forse più seducente se... “
“Se cosa, dottore?” chiede Casper massaggiandosi il gibbo del naso.
Il dottore agita lievemente la mano. “Niente, non ha alcuna importanza.” dice sfogliando poi il blocchetto degli appunti. “Dunque, vedo che lei ha frequentato i corsi in comunicazione di Toastmasters; sembra che abbia addirittura scopiazzato agli esami. Poi ha provato con l'ipnosi, e...” Il dottore ridacchia “... ha persino provato a stare in piedi dietro ad una donna come esercizio di comunicazione. Piuttosto disperato come metodo, eh? Trova che l'altro sesso sia poco seducente, signor Helfin?”
“No, certo che no!”
“Le è mai capitato, in palestra, di osservare la strumentazione di un altro maschio? Non so, nelle docce per esempio”.
“Beh...si, forse una volta. Non si poteva fare a meno di notare che questo tizio...”

As President Bush prepares this week to announce a new plan for the war in Iraq, doubts are growing in Baghdad and among some international analysts over whether U.S. attempts to reconcile Iraq's warring factions are excluding the very people who need reconciling -- the Sunni-led insurgents and their archenemies, the Shiite militias.
Put simply, the question is this: With more than 3,000 American troops and many tens of thousands of Iraqis killed since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, is it time to speak to the killers themselves?
In interviews with Chronicle correspondents in Iraq and by telephone with a Chronicle reporter in San Francisco, two dozen Sunni and Shiite hard-liners revealed a paradox. None could fully explain how to bring his side's sectarian killings under control, yet all emphasized that peace cannot take hold without the approval of those holding the weapons.
"The U.S. administration's problem is that it has been negotiating with (Iraqi) politicians and parties that have no public support, so they are unable to help the United States withdraw from Iraq," said a former brigadier general in Saddam Hussein's army who said he is "close" to the Sunni-led insurgency and asked that his name be withheld for security reasons.

Messa semplicemente, la domanda è: dopo la perdita di oltre 3.000 soldati statunitensi e le molte decine di migliaia di iracheni uccisi dall’inizio dell’invasione dell’Iraq nel 2003, non è giunto il momento di intavolare un dialogo con gli assassini stessi?
Nel corso di varie interviste rilasciate ai corrispondenti del Chronicle in Iraq, e al telefono con un suo giornalista a San Francisco, una ventina di irriducibili, sia sunniti che sciiti, hanno evidenziato un paradosso. Benché nessuno di loro fosse in grado di spiegare completamente come tenere sotto controllo gli omicidi a carattere confessionale della propria fazione, tutti erano concordi nel sottolineare che non sarà possibile instaurare la pace senza il consenso di coloro che detengono le armi.
“Il problema dell'amministrazione statunitense è che ha continuato a negoziare con politici e partiti (iracheni) che non hanno il supporto dell'opinione pubblica, e che quindi non sono in grado di aiutare gli Stati Uniti a ritirarsi dall'Iraq”, ha detto un ex generale di brigata dell'esercito di Saddam Hussein, che ha detto di essere "vicino" alla rivolta guidata dai sunniti e ha chiesto di rimanere nell’anonimato per ragioni di sicurezza.

Cela n’est d’ailleurs guère étonnant, tant la pulsion de mort semble habiter les discours des deux belligérants et, surtout, leurs actes. À force de conspuer l’autre, de le haïr, de le vouer aux gémonies, on finit par lui ressembler. Le processus d’identification est poussé à son paroxysme, et la rencontre impossible entre deux adversaires que tout devrait en principe opposer devient de l’ordre du réel, se fait dans le don affreux, aux civils, de la mort et de la destruction. La guerra tra Israele e Hezbollah è entrata nella terza settimana, e non sembra ancora vicina alla conclusione, se dobbiamo basarci su quanto dichiarano le due “società guerrafondaie”, (Israele e Hezbollah) le quali, da parte loro, hanno deciso che questo confronto era “una questione di vita o di morte”. Niente di sorprendente, considerato quanto la pulsione di morte sembra essere presente nei discorsi dei due belligeranti e, soprattutto, nelle loro azioni. A forza di schernire l'altro, di odiarlo, di coprirlo di obbrobri, si finisce per somigliargli. Il processo di identificazione è spinto al parossismo, e l'impossibile somiglianza tra due avversari che tutto sembrerebbe, in teoria, rendere opposti, finisce col rientrare nell'ordine del reale, e concretizzarsi finalmente nel dono odioso, ai civili, di morte e distruzione. |
