Lost species of bee-mimicking moth rediscovered after 130 years
The rare oriental blue clearwing, that disguises itself as a bee, was spotted in the Malaysian rainforest.
A moth that disguises itself as a bee and was previously only identified by a single damaged specimen collected in 1887 has been rediscovered in the Malaysian rainforest by a lepidopterist from Poland.
The oriental blue clearwing (Heterosphecia tawonoides) was seen “mud-puddling” – collecting salts and minerals from damp areas with its tongue-like proboscis on the banks of a river in Malaysia’s lowland rainforest, one of the most wildlife-rich and threatened regions on Earth.
Four individuals of the rare moth, which shines strikingly blue in sunshine, were collected for genetic analysis and examination of their genitalia, which confirmed that the specimens belonged to this “lost species”.
The 1887 specimen was collected in Indonesia but Marta Skowron Volponi of the University of Gdańsk rediscovered the species when she saw a flash of brilliant blue on the banks of unpolluted rivers flowing through lowland rainforest on the Peninsula Malaysia.
On three field trips in 2013, 2016 and 2017, Skowron Volponi and her co-author and husband, filmmaker Paolo Volponi, observed and filmed just 12 individuals, suggesting the elusive moth is extremely rare.
English to Portuguese: Bartending/Work/Responsibilities and duties Detailed field: Human Resources
Source text - English Bartending/Work/Responsibilities and duties
As stated before, a bartender is not a simple autonomous drink mixer; he/she is the most important figure in the establishment.
He/she must make patrons of the establishment feel welcome, secure, and relaxed.
To the patrons of a bar, the bartender is a very powerful figure.
Bartenders must keep their work area clean.
Counter tops and tables must be cleaned with disinfectant, soap and water.
Outside furniture must also be wiped at the start of the day.
Make sure people drink responsibly.
Another way to occupy the customers is to engage two strangers; a few words between two patrons new to each other can draw two strangers into a quick bond of friendship, which not only benefits them, but frees you, the bartender, up during the busy rush.
Always get your regulars something free once in a while.
Make sure that you have the authority to give out a free drink occasionally, or Chips and Salsa.
You're a friend, you need to make sure you can get your best customers something free when they're low on cash, stressed out, or just generally could use it.
If a customer has been hanging at the bar continuously buying food and drinks for a while, you could mix them something cheap for free, perhaps something they haven't tried before.
Note that in many states the giving away of alcohol is illegal for various reasons.
However, it is often worthwhile for a bartender to purchase a drink for his or her customer out of his or her pocket as the money is often returned with substantial interest at tip time.
Translation - Portuguese Atendente de Bar/Trabalho/Responsabilidades e deveres
English to Portuguese: NASA Studies the Human Body in Space Detailed field: Aerospace / Aviation / Space

Bridging the Gap: NASA Studies the Human Body in Space for One Year to Extrapolate for Missions to Mars.
Before we can run or jump, we walk. Before sending humans to Mars, NASA must understand how the human body is affected by living and working in space. Typical missions to the International Space Station last six months. A round-trip mission to Mars could last three years. Do the effects of being in space change over time? NASA is asking the scientific community to propose research that will help bridge the gap in our knowledge regarding long-term experiences in space.
NASA’s Human Research Program is now soliciting proposals for research that, when combined with ongoing NASA studies, could enable safer and more effective travel to destinations beyond low-Earth orbit. NASA is seeking research proposals in seven topic areas.
Such research will help NASA establish a baseline for proposed deep space missions up to 400 days in length as well as understand, prevent, diagnose, treat, mitigate, and cure the potential health effects of prolonged spaceflight. Interested scientists and researchers will find a detailed description of the research emphases, as well as the proposal process and awards, on the NSPIRES website.
“To draw any conclusions about the cumulative effects of exposure to space, we need to observe more astronauts spending larger amounts of time in the space environment,” said John Charles, Ph.D., associate director for Exploration Research Planning of the Human Research Program at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. “Scientists can use the information to predict physical and behavioral health trends.”
My passion for the English language has started early; I was influenced by my mother who was an English teacher and an international tourist guide. By the sixth semester of pursuing a major in Civil Engineering, I decided to drop out and follow my dream of moving to the United States, where I came to live for almost ten years.
While living in the United States, I worked as a salesman at a Brazilian superstore and studied English at OCPS Tech Center (Orange County Public Schools), where I enrolled into a program named ESOL (English for students of other languages).
On my return to Brazil, I joined the largest Radio Taxi Drivers Association in Latin America located in São Paulo, where I worked for twelve years as a bilingual tourist guide and escort interpreter.
I am a native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese and I am close to achieving my bachelor´s degree in English. I have been teaching English at the most reliable school of Languages in Ourinhos - SP, named GSP (Global Studies for Proficiency) since 2015
I am in a career transition process aiming to dedicate myself exclusively to translating. I speak Spanish, understand Italian and French but I sincerely admire the way English language sounds and its grammar.
It is definitely not enough to just know a second language in order to be a successful translator; translating is much more than that, it is meant to relay a message to the reader as if it was written in the language being read. To that end, you have to master the art of writing in both languages, especially in the target one.
I am aware that living in the United States is not a determining factor to become a good translator, but to have known and lived their culture is undeniably crucial to any translator’s career.
Therefore, I am able to offer high-quality and reliable translations, honoring deadlines and having close (via e-mail, Skype) and good relationship with my clients.
For further information about my working areas, quotes, and other related issues, please contact me at [email protected] and I will be glad to promptly answer your request.
Regards,
Claudio Barossi
